Liuget @ #23 or Sherrod @ #29 ? or ?.........

Here's a mock that has Liuget going to NO at #24 and the Bears taking Sherrod at #29.

If this were your choices as Bears GM would you settle for Sherrod as your OT or trade up for your 3t DT? Trading up to #23 (Philly's pick) would cost us our 3rd round pick in exchange for the swap of our pick for theirs.

Considering our greatest needs could be met with either choice would you trade up or stay at #29? Or would you trade down into round two?

To be honest we cannot afford to trade up for a 3 technique DT. That would leave us with a late 2nd round pick to try and fix an OL problem that is incredibly bad.

As much as Bears fans do not want to admit it this team has way more talent at DT with Toenia and Melton then we do at OL.

Sherrod 10 times out of 10.

If I really wanted to move up then it would be ahead of the Colts for Carimi.

OK I accept that but look at the round two mock. According to this we could grab Liuget on the trade up and still get your boy Marcus Cannon instead of Austin right before the Pack nabs him. If you could get Cannon in two would you still pass on the trade up for Liuget?

Or you can trade back to #37 or #38 and have a choice of Paea or Ijalana there and, depending on which you pick, have a shot at Austin or Cannon at #62.

It's a tough call. In this case though I'd go LT as Melton would split time w/draft pick (Liuget). Would be different if it was a out of the box DT like Suh playing full time or something. Tice already did his part w/a 7th rounder, now it's Rod's turn to see what he can do with a later round pick.

You misunderstood my scenario shorty. In this mock we'd have to trade our 3rd to Philly in order to trade their #23 for our #29 in order to get Liuget. If we stay at #29 we take your LT (Sherrod) choice but in that case, no Liuget at DT to rotate with Melton.

Since you have your LT (Sherrod) you now have settle for Marvin Austin at #62. Trading up to the top of the 2nd for Paea would be far too expensive. Would you be satisfied with Sherrod in the first and Austin in the second?

I think that would be acceptable provided Tice has more input than say Ruskell on what he desires for a LT. Same deal for Austin for Rod. I just don't want Ruskell coming in and diluting the input of 2 very good positional coaches. Not to say Ruskell could not eventually bear fruit-just not in his first draft here.

That would be a perfect scenario and if that could be guaranteed then maybe.

But it still leaves us with a major question mark at LT.

This defense was dominant without a star DT this year.

Which scenario, trade up or stay? If we stay then we have a Sherrod who competes with Williams for the LT spot. Loser most likely plays LG. Then we take our chances that Austin's character issues and inconsistencies are behind him and that he's not just another Marcus Harrison. The guy has the numbers but does he have the right attitude?

If we trade up for Liuget we lose a third round pick but still have a shot at Cannon, Gilbert, Carpenter, Hudson, etc among the second tier Olineman.

One way or the other we're gonna have to sacrifice somewhere. If we stay we end up taking a good Olineman but a questionable DT. If we move up we get the best DT we can get but have to take a second tier Olinman.

If it were me I trade up for Liuget forthe exact same reason we've been discussing all along. There are no 3t DT's worth signing in FA but there are plenty of OG's and even a few good OT's. Since even Sherrod is a question mark at LT I'd rather have the one guy who can step in and make a difference at a position of need now than to take two guys who may not.

I think the dream scenario would be to trade up for Liuget and still get Cannon in the 2nd round.

I do not agree with your assessment of the free agent DT class as in my opinion, Cullen Jenkins, Brandon Mebane and Barry Cofield could all step in and do what we want them to do.

If I am trading up I might be doing it to target an OLmen over Liuget, as I have heard rumors that Liuget could go as high as 14 to the Rams, and to me Carimi would be a better target.

The same argument can be made for the trade up for OL as the 2nd round has a lot of 3 technique talent in Austin, Nevis and Ballard.

Trading up for Liuget at #23 and taking Cannon (or other Olieman) at #62 is exactly what I proposed based on this particular mock.

Again going by this mock we'd have to trade up to #21 to get Carimi which would cost us another pick besides the third. Probably a fourth based on the trade value chart. If, as this mock projects, Solder and Sherrod are still on the board I doubt they'd do that. Two mid round picks for one OT is more than I'd go as well.

Cullen Jenkins is 30 years old and not a lasting solution at DT and following Jolly's arrest the Pack may make a strong bid to get him back. He's worth more to them that to us IMO. Although you think otherwise, whatever Mebane's talent it lies at NT, not UT. Barry Colfield is a NT too. What makes you think either would be any better than Toeina at UT?

Check 2nd round mock. Ballard is gone at #43, Paea at #37, Casey at #45 and McClain at #53. Only Austin and Nevis are left when the Bears pick at #62. I can see Austin dropping that far but don't know why Nevis falls from the second round. Either work at UT but I think both represent a significant drop off from Liuget.
