Angelo expects a "big jump" from Greg Olsen

Jerry Angelo expects a "big jump" from Greg Olsen in 2011

By Sean Jensen on March 28, 2011 9:58 PM

In January, Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz lamented tight end Greg Olsen's statistics in the passing game "are not what they could, and probably should be."
Last week, Bears general manager Jerry Angelo suggested Olsen will have a "more prominent" role in Martz's offense next season.

"I thought he did a lot of good things, last year. But I think you'll see a lot more things, more consistently, because of the familiarity that our coaches have with him," Angelo said.

Angelo noted how many wondered about Olsen's role in Martz's offense, which previously hadn't highlighted a tight end. While his numbers dropped from 2009, Olsen came up with big plays and stretched opposing defenses.

"We felt good, because of the fact that we know the person, we know how important football is [to him], and he's got talent, and any good coach or system I've been around always finds a way to accentuate to the best players, and I felt we did that," Angelo said. "I expect him to make a big jump as well, next year. No reason to believe he won't."

Both he and Bears coach Lovie Smith said Olsen improved as a blocker in 2010. But Smith said there "only so many balls," with other talented skill players like running back Matt Forte and receivers Johnny Knox and Devin Hester.

But that's not all; Smith also mentioned backup tight end Kellen Davis.
"[Olsen] was just a great team player in his role, and just like I said with other guys, we're going to try to find ways to keep them all involved. I was pleased with what Kellen Davis was able to do," Smith said. "You could make a case for Kellen getting more plays, being more involved also. He's everything you're looking for in a tight end. We just have to keep the progress going. The second year in the system, we know the guys a lot better."

It will be interesting to see what the Bears do with Olsen. He enters the final year of his rookie deal, which is set to pay him a base salary of $900,000, about $500,000 less than Brandon Manumaleuna, a blocking tight end signed last offseason.

Smith, though, shed some light on what a tight end will not do in the Bears offense.
"I guess you look at the numbers and they want the tight end to catch 100 balls," Smith said of the team's offense under Martz. "We have too many options on the offensive sides of the ball for our tight ends to have those kinds of numbers. But you can still be a big part of the offense, which Greg and Kellen are."

Carrying both Davis and Olsen in 2011 isn't an issue. But, the team will likely have to make some hard choices sooner than later. The Bears have invested heavily in quarterback Jay Cutler and Hester, and Olsen and Forte are entering the final year of their respective deals.

Without an extension, if he makes that "big jump" in 2011, than Olsen's price tag will be even higher next offseason. The Bears, of course, could franchise him, if they can't agree to a long-term deal; Marcedes Lewis of the Jacksonville Jaguars signed his franchise tender that was worth $7.3 million earlier this month.

not a chance they would franchise olsen in 2012.. either they work out a deal after the CBA ends as suspect they will,,but with a $7 mill+ franchise tg for a TE no way with a cap ever do that- think olsen will have a jump in 2011 and show his worth

Cut Manu. bump olsen's pay, and give more oppotunities to Kellen Davis. He can do everything BM can do, and then some.

Once again this should eliminate the talk that Olsen should or will be traded at least for now. JA is saying the right things but I also see the reason why. Olsen will be challenged to reach a higher level this year and he'll be given an opportunity to do so. With his contract expiration coming up and Rosenhaus as his agent you just know the asking price is gonna be high.

I think if Olsen is having a great year it's easier for JA to justify a lucrative extension rather than allow him to hit FA where I believe he'd be gone in a NY minute. He may never be a 100 catch per season guy with the Bears but that doesn't mean he couldn't be elsewhere.

I really like the combination of TE's we have now. This is the best staffed that position has been for as long as I can remember. For years we didn't even have a TE that could match up with Davis let alone Olsen. If Martz begin to use these guys as well as he did during the playoffs our passing game gets a whole lot better even without that bigger target we all want.

Agreed, though for some they will aways say it.. and think martz started to fially 'get it" and use the TE more as the year went on, so that is also why angelo IMO think he will have a big jump nextyear

I expect a good draft out of Jerry but who am I kidding. Perhaps it is time to move Gregg Olsen to WR but then again why mess with a good thing.

JA is due for a face saving draft at least at the top. After being without number ones for two years a few of our cupboards are getting a little bare. With all of his picks except the 7th he needs to come away with at least two impact guys at positions of major need; OT, DT, OG and two more prospects for the secondary needs like CB, LB, C, etc.

top 2 rounds last few years when did have picks, we have picked up hester, manning, olsen, forte, olsen,c willaims... while not 'great' also not "awful" as some like to portray.. and gettingcutler for the 2, #1's, alos IMo a bears win.. So do not see the need for 'face saving", but agree would love to at least 2 impact guys from this draft, and depending on how breaks we can easily get that..

He's had some early round successes but also some huge failures. Overall he rates about average or slightly above average. I'd like to see a bust out year or two from him where he rates an A or an A-. This year the needs are pretty obvious and since we no longer have to concern ourselves with a QB he's got a clear shot at meeting those needs. Even he admits that there's some decent depth in this draft so all he needs to do is get the best value he can and not reach from a position standpoint.

If the OT isn't there in round one take the UT or OG and so on with every round until you've got the positions filled with guys you really like. Don't fall in love with any one guy and always have a backup pick or two planned in every round. This year we have to score.

I expect Olsen to get what all TEs get in the Martz system.
