What do we of the Bears drafting Gilbert?
I think Maycock is puffing him a lot if he thinks he's a first round pick. I agree that he's moving up but anyone who takes him in the first would be pretty desperate for an OT. If somebody else want to chance it fine but not the Bears. He may not last until the #62 pick and then again he may. He'd be a decent pick at that point but not at #29.

Why do you say that he is puffing him up? I do not know enough about him.

The little bits I have seen him play he has looked very solid and you cannot argue with the size at 6'6" 330lbs.

From what I've seen in scouting reports he rates as about the 8th to 10th best OT in the draft. I just don't see how a guy who rates right in there with guys like Carpenter and Cannon is gonna magically shoot into the first round. In addition he's far more a RT only guy than any of the top 5 OT's (Smith, Castonzo, Carimi, Sherrod and Solder). Even Solder, who we all agree needs time to develop too, is a prototype LT while Gilbert is not.

Personally I'd take Ijalana before Gilbert despite his small school background. He's a much better athlete than Gilbert, of similar size, and has a much better chance of growing into an NFL LT than does Gilbert. He should rank ahead of Gilbert as OT's go but even he isn't rated as a first rounder so I can't see how Gilbert would be. The Bears saw him in Florida and worked him out I'm sure so they have a pretty good idea of where he stands valuewise.

I'll trust them to make a good decision when it comes time but there's no way I see Gilbert going in one unless somebody makes a huge reach.

I don't know where you got that from, but he's called him a solid second round pick, not a first rounder. I simply don't like his feet, and really beg to differ with Mayock on his ability to play LT. Just too heavy in his movement to hang there as a pro.

    From Mayock

    31.Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi St.

Historically, it's not unusual to see five offensive tackles go in the first round. Either Sherrod or Marcus Gilbert from Florida are guys who are very solid picks who could end up in the back end of the first round.

I am going to watch Penn State Florida again tonight to take a look at him.

Wow, hadn't seen that. I'll just call Mayock out on this one and say he is nothing more than a 2/3 guy only because of the position he plays. From a talent perspective, I couldn't even advocate him in round two.

I am looking for someone to love on the OL in the 2nd round, because I think we are going to go DT in the 1st [Marvin Austin].

I have not seen a ton of Gilbert and I would like to see more of a break down from Mayock.

If Gilbert is carrying a solid 2nd round grade, and I trust Mayock as he seems the most plugged in of all of the draft guys, then he could easily make his way into the late 1st round.

If Gilbert is close to the Sherrods and Solders of the world it really comes down to preference as most of these guys carry fringe 1st high 2nd round grades.

25-35 in this draft seems all the same.

Would it shock people if either Chicago, Pittsburgh or Green Bay take Gilbert at the end of the run on OTs.

Yes, that would be a worse reach than Duane Brown. He's done nothing "special" on the field, has had average at best workouts and isn't nearly as talented as the other players that will be sitting there. Like I said, 2/3 ONLY because of the position he plays is the topside of his ratings for me, and anything more than a mid-late second for him would be a huge waste of value. I would draft one of the many DEs in that area before I even considered him. I would draft Hankerson or Torrey Smith before I went for him. I would grab a Martez Wilson or Allenn bailey before I grabbed him there. Basically, I would rather get one of the QBs there than him because at least it would be fair value. Look no further than his '08 draft to see the types of guys he "believes have a shot at the end of round 1."

    21. Washington Redskins - Calais Campbell/DE (Miami-Fla) Jr.
    29. San Francisco 49ers (from Indianapolis Colts) - Dan Connor/LB (Penn State) Sr.
    31. New York Giants - Mario Manningham/WR (Michigan) Jr.

Yeah, he only missed on their value by like 100 spots combined. I think, overall, he has some of the right ears when he make shis evaluations, but sometimes he looks at the position these guys play and team needs too much when he "goes gagga" over "risers".

I agree that we should not reach in that case, but we do not know if the Bears think it is a reach.

I am just not sure how much of a gap there is between players like Gilbert and Franklin and Sherrod and Carimi on NFL Boards, because there does not seem to be in Mayocks opinion.

I would add Gilbert, and perhaps put him to the top of the list, of guys we can target with a trade down.

And all of the guys that you mentioned are either starters or stars.
