Carimi sees self as top OT in the draft......

Carimi capable of contributing from outset of NFL career

ChicagoBears.com is profiling the top 30 prospects in the NFL Draft, according to NFL Network expert Mike Mayock. No. 19 is Wisconsin offensive tackle Gabe Carimi.
A four-year starter at Wisconsin who excelled against top competition, offensive tackle Gabe Carimi is considered among the most NFL-ready prospects in the draft.

Offensive tackle Cabe Carimi started 49 games in four seasons at Wisconsin.“I think the kid is a plug-and-play right tackle,” wrote NFL Network’s Mike Mayock. “Throw him in there and he’s a starter on Day 1. And he’s a starter for the next 10 years. He’s got a little attitude and there’s something tough about him. He’s a good football player.”
Carimi won the Outland Trophy last season as the nation’s best interior lineman. The 6-7, 314-pounder said at the NFL Combine that he felt he is the No. 1 tackle in the draft because “I’m physically strong and have more career starts and better knowledge of the game than any other tackle out there.”
Carimi pointed out that he faced three potential first-round draft picks in defensive ends Adrian Clayborn of Iowa, Ryan Kerrigan of Purdue and Cam Heyward of Ohio State, and a fourth in practice in Wisconsin’s J.J. Watt.
“I have a better résumé of going against better talent than anyone else, so that makes me more [pro] ready,” Carimi said.
Carimi’s profile on NFL.com states that he "looks to punish defensive ends on every play. His non-stop motor, coupled with his ideal size, make him a terror in the running game and he has enough athleticism to hold his own in pass protection. Like all tall lineman, Carimi struggles at times with leverage and may have to make the move to right tackle in the NFL. Overall, Carimi is a beast who should be picked in the middle of the first round.”
Pro Football Weekly describes Carimi as “a big long-limbed leaner who answered the bell against better competition as a senior against Iowa and Ohio State and added an exclamation point at the Senior Bowl.”

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. predicts that Carimi will be selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 23rd pick in the first round of the draft.
Kiper writes that Carimi is “a guy who loves to run block and will sustain those blocks. But he can also take on great pass-rushers, and has shown enough that it figures he could fill in at either tackle position early, potentially starting on the right side with the goal to become a starting left tackle.”

Here's my pick for the Bears in the first if we decide to go OT before DT. The problem is he may or may not last. Kiper has him going to Philly at #23 and I've seem other mocks who have him going to Indy at #22. Trading up to #21 to get in front of these two would cost 160 value points. Essentially our 3rd and 4th round picks just to move up 8 places.
That seems like too much to lose especially in rounds where we usually find some very good players. Of course we can always hope that he falls but at this point in time it doesn't seem likely. I do like his attitude and confidence though, "I have a better resume going against better talent than anyone else, so that makes me more pro ready".
You can't argue the fact that the guy played well against the likes of Adrian Clayborn, Christian Ballard, Ryan Kerrigan, Cam Heyward and his teamate JJ Watts everday in practice. Dags and Windy I'll put that competition up against anything those SEC OT's you guys love so much have faced.
Even if he turns out to be a RT with the Bears, or whoever, claiming that they're gonna give Webb a shot at LT he still has a place to start. If CWill can take over at LT we put Carimi at LG. To me he's the best overall OT we could get in both combination of blocking skills and positional flexibility.
The other thing is that he wore #68 at Wisconsin. That's Omiyale's number, so what say we draft Carimi, give him OMG's number, and kick that disaster to the curb. Sound like a plan?

Why do people keep believing Webb is going to play LT? He's slow footed and dumb as a rock.

That's why I said the Bears, or whoever, is claiming that Webb will be moved to LT. I don't believe they will move Webb. He's a natural RT. My guess is that if we do draft Carimi he'll compete with CWill for LT and the loser will play LG. I wouldn't hold my breathe though. Most think he won't fall to us.

Nor should we be drafting a natural right tackle to play left tackle or left gurd.
I believe as much as anyone that our offensive line needs a jolt of youth and talent. But with no offseason programs I don't think this is the time to spend our first pick on a guy that may not get the time and training to crack the week one starting roster.
I'd much rather spend the early pick on a solid UT prospect, because looking at our schedule, if we are going to win early in the serason, it will be on the back of our defense anyway.

Unlike some of the others I don't think that Carimi is a natural RT. He's spent 4 years playing LT in college and won the Outland Trophy as a LT. He's always been a better pass blocker than he's given credit for. Because Wisonsin was primarily a running team that's what he's known for but he has gone up against some awfully good competition. Four different Big Ten DE's he played against are being touted as first round picks and DT Christian Ballard is a second rounder.
Despite that I'm with you. If Liuget is there he's the pick at #29 but some mocks have him going at #14 to the Rams and in another I've seen him picked to go at #25 to the Seahawks. It looks more and more like he won't fall to us and I have my doubts about Carimi still being on the board at #29 either. If we were to give up our third we may be able to move up 5-6 spots and and at that spot one or maybe both should be available.
Overall it may be a better strategy to move down into the early second and choose Paea or Austin. Then we take the best LT still on our board at #62. One of the second tier guys should still be there. But what it comes down to is if either Carimi or Liuget are still there at #29 you take that one. If both are there (not much chance of that) you take Liuget and again take the OT in two.

Carimi is my favorite of the OTs but he wont last to us. And the worse case scenario if he doesnt pan out at LT he can be an outstanding RT which is still a hole on this team. One way or the other every oline position needs an upgrade

LTs rarely last until the 62nd pick.
If we are going to trade down I would rather look at DT at 62 as that player may not be needed to start right away.

So you say.
And I know you would.
Both opinions so noted.
