Angelo: Bears' draft plan includes quarterback
By Brad Biggs, Tribune reporter 12:25 p.m. CDT, April 21, 2011
The Chicago Bears currently have six picks for next week’s draft and if general manager Jerry Angelo wasn’t blowing smoke Thursday morning, one of them will be used on a quarterback.
The franchise swung and missed last year on its plan to develop Central Michigan’s Dan LeFevour, a sixth-round pick who was released at final cutdowns. Angelo blamed Caleb Hanie's preseason shoulder injury for foiling the plan, but the fact is offensive coordinator Mike Martz campaigned long and hard for a veteran quarterback, eventually getting Todd Collins with two weeks to go before the start of the season.
LeFevour was going to sign on with the Bears' practice squad before the Cincinnati Bengals swooped in and signed him to their 53-man roster. Now, the Bears appear to be positioned to have Hanie reclaim the No. 2 role behind Jay Cutler in his fourth season with the team. That would create an opening for a rookie to be No. 3 on the depth chart.
"It can never be a luxury position," Angelo said. "We know that. We're looking hard again this year. We really want to develop our own and I really thought we had a good plan last year. The thing that really impacted that plan to coming to fruition, Caleb Hanie got hurt at a bad time. He got hurt early in the preseason and was going to miss the whole preseason.
"New staff having to come in. Now they really can't evaluate him. He can't develop. What do you do? You can't take a sixth-round draft pick and go into the season saying he's going to be the backup. That's not fair to the football team and/or him, so we went out and got the veteran and that's just what you have to do, but our goal, our plan, and I speak for our coaches as well, is to develop our own players. We feel real good about that and Mike Martz's track record in terms in doing that has been very good and there is no reason why we can’t do that so that will be our goal again this year."
The Bears have put North Carolina's T.J. Yates through a private workout. They’ve also taken a close look at TCU's Andy Dalton, but he could be moving into the first round, far before Angelo will be comfortable selecting a developmental passer. Martz attended Idaho’s pro day to look at Nathan Enderle

Glad to see that someone came forth with the truth behind the Todd Collins signing. It had a lot more to do with Martz's whining for a vet than anything else. Take away Collins and leave Hanie as the #2 getting by with LeFevour until Hanie got healthy and we don't have a hole to fill at #3 QB this year.
I can't see using a pick for one since we've already got Gutierrez on the roster. There should be UDFA QB's like Scott Tolzien and Enderle out there after the draft.

They can pick any qb they wish after the 6th round.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

Angelo looking for OTs who can play OG. Bears want bigger players on the OL.

JA wants to develop a young QB. "Our goal, our plan is to develop our own players. Martz's track record has been very good."

Angelo acknowledges Tice and Martz are looking for bigger offensive linemen who could be interchangable between T and G. JD

JA: "I just don't want to overrate the (WR) position." It's a passing league, right?

Angelo on OL: "We want to go bigger. We're not really looking at guard/centers."

Jerry Angelo just said Bears aren't overly concerned w/the baggage of North Carolina DT Marvin Austin.

Also have to mention that Jerry Angelo also said that he doesn't consider Derek Sherrod a first-round guy.

It is liars season so I am going to give my interpretations

I see no reason that Jerry would say this unless he was someone that he was considering. Is he trying to distance himself from Sherrod for a reason? I doubt Jerry would simply say that about a guy for no purpose.

Angelo on OL: "We want to go bigger. We're not really looking at guard/centers."
We want Mike Pouncey, but we realize that it is not going to happen. Or Olin Kreutz we still really like you and are not looking to replace you right away.

Perhaps prepping fans for the eventual trade down and the targeting of Cannon, Franklin or Carpenter.

Angelo said Lovie Smith, Rod Marinelli & scouts spent a "goodly" amount of time in NC w/North Carolina DT Marvin Austin.
I really cannot see Jerry gushing about a player that they are actually targeting. Perhaps trying to drive Austin's price tag above the 29th pick?

JA is the consumate smoke screen man. He's ready to go into his "War Room Jerry" phase about now so anything he says can be taken with a grain of salt. Personally I think the truth is more like;
Sherrod doesn't rate a first round pick so I hope like hell he's not the only choice left to us at #29 because I won't reach for him. That doesn't mean I'm not interested in the second though so I might trade down and still get him.
If we take an OT who also projects at OG then we know that he'll start somewhere for us this year. I sure hope that Carimi get close to us. I might even trade up a notch or two to get him. If not then a guy like Ijalana really interests me 320 lbs, very athletic, can play inside or out (which is why I'm not mentioning him) and that Cannon kid would make Mike Tice happy. He wants size, I'll give him size but he'll have to monitor his weight. Those fat boys can over do it with a knife and fork in their hands.
Marvin Austin, shhhhhhhh!!! We like the kid, he could be as good as Liuget or better but we don't like his attitude or where his head is at. He's got a lot of prima donna in him and I don't want to replace our departing prima donna with a new one. If Wilkerson goes before us we may have to take a chance on him anyway and hope that some of Lovie's wholesomeness will rub off on him. Rod's gonna have his hands full with him but if anyone can make him great Rod can.

-He has to have some interest in Sherrod as he totally tanks him for no other reason.
-The bigger OT/OG types does not really surprise anyone does it? We could have guessed that Tice would be in love with the Carimi and Cannons of this draft.
-The Marvin Austin comments are harder for me to read into. He is very positive about Austin saying that they have spent a lot of time with him and that they do not mind his character issues. If he wanted to draft Austin why would be talking about him in such a glowing light I would suppose that he would want to drag his value down a bit.

Angelo on how much the Bears weight character picking at No. 29: "We're not looking for best friends or neighbors. We're looking for guys who get it and come in here with good attitudes, good work ethics and are very passionate about football. If they have those things in common, I can personally get along with them. Particularly if they have talent."

The best way to understand him in his War Room Jerry mode is to watch what they've (staff and coaches) done a whole lot more than what he says. If they didn't have a considerable interest in Austin they would not have spent all that much time with him evaluating everything down to his shoe size. He wants him but not at #29 if he can help it or they've decided after the eval that they don't but will try and hype him up the board to a team drafting before us.
