Most top mocks had him as a 3rd or 4th rounder.. why would he have gone undrafted? thanks
CBS had him a 3rd rounder( #95) and think gil brandt sums it up best( for both sides in the conte debate):
Player RankingsOverallPosition Rank 95 3rd round
Overview
Having spent the first three seasons of his career at California as a reserve cornerback, Conte's emergence last season as a first-team All Pac-10 free safety surprised many scouts. So too, did his physical, reliable play despite the relative in-experience.
Conte has prototypical size and good athleticism overall for the position and proved to be a very reliable open-field tackler as Cal's last line of defense. Pessimists will argue that he's only been successful one season. Optimists will point out that it was his first year at the new position and that his blend of size and athleticism should translate into a more productive NFL career than the one he had in college. In a weak year for safeties, Conte's upside could ultimately earn him a top 100 grade
Btw hoke at the proday:

musick:
A day after addressing the Bears’ offensive line, Angelo turned to defense in Rounds 2 and 3.
Second round (No. 53 overall)
Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon St.
Early grade: A
The Bears filled a big need by adding a big body to their defensive line.
Paea (6-foot-1, 295 pounds) emerged as a force at Oregon St., where he registered 14 sacks and nine forced fumbles in 37 career starts. He was named as a consensus All-American in 2010 and also was named as the Pac 10’s Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year.
Paea should improve under Bears defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli. The 21-year-old was born on the Tongan island of Vav’u and did not play football until he was a high school senior.
“If somebody had told me when I came from Tonga that I would be the 53rd pick of the draft, I would have laughed,” said Paea, who moved to the U.S. when he was 16 and learned English in junior college. “Now, I’m going to one of the best organizations, the Bears. I’m just blessed.”
Paea underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in January but he said Friday that he was 100 percent healthy. He has played both defensive tackle and nose tackle.
“If I come in and start, it’s a blessing,” Paea said. “If not, I’ll learn from the great players like [Julius] Peppers and the whole D-line crew.”
Third round (No. 93 overall)
Chris Conte, S, Cal
Early grade: B
For the seventh consecutive season, the Bears drafted a safety.
Conte (6-foot-2, 197 pounds) spent the first three seasons as a reserve cornerback at Cal before becoming the starting free safety as a senior. He shined in the role, earning a selection to the All-Pac 10 first-team defense with 72 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble.
“Usually, you don’t see players take off like he did when they move to another position,” said Angelo, who described Conte as a pure free safety. “He really blossomed.”
Conte said he felt as if he was the best safety in the draft.
“It really fits me and my personality, coming down [field] and trying to be aggressive,” Conte said.

The Bears aren't concerned about Conte's inexperience at safety because that only adds to his upside. -- MW

Well shit using that theory, never pick a top notch junior/senior that was good enough NOT to have his position moved.....*face palm* worst theory ever. Guess that Paea and Cramini picks are garbage, they don't have near the upside this guy has.

I think the Bears should have drafted a CB, G or WR in round 3. Those were bigger needs than FS.
I do understand what you are saying about looking to the future, but we need help NOW at CB, G and WR.
They better be players in FA to address those positions.

and NONE of the guards/Cb or Wr's would have been starters in 2011 either and all 3 positions would be players looking to the future, imo jeff.. what players of CB/WR/G do you think would have started in 2011 for immediate 2011 help at #93? thanks!
maybe i'm missing someone but can't see any( esp with players like little, irving, pettis etc all gone already)

Just NFL.com:
Conte has enough size and speed coupled with the mentality you like to see. Probably never becomes a starter, but could be an effective reserve safety and special teams cover guy. Only started for one season in college so potentially has more development left in him than most other draft prospects. Is currently a liability in coverage. Doesn't have the experience or instincts in zone coverage to be counted on to erase a deep half or the lateral quickness and acceleration to hold up in man coverage. Shows the ability to develop into a productive run supporter. Conte could be a seventh-rounder or priority free agent.

so have 4-5 with 3rd-4th round grades on conte and one with a 7th or later... not sure how that tranlates into would not be drafted, other than the nfl.com may be the outlier
