I think he has a good deal of power and needs to be reigned in but his power seems specific to certain things. For example he can run amok with Todd Collins, Manu, lack of shotgun etc, but when you think that the most FOUNDATIONAL hire in his coaching staff-the WR coach, he simply keeps him and thats it.

Even if we could have drafted a WR or more what is the percentage that Drake could have developed them?

Take into consideration about Darryl Drake: he has never had a stud wide receiver picked in the draft before. The best two WRs he's ever had were Bernard Berrian and now Johnny Knox. I think he did well with Berrian considering that he was specifically a deep pass threat, while Johnny Knox may well be the most complete WR the Bears have had since Marty Booker. Neither of those guys were picked any higher than in the third round (Berrian in the third, Knox in the fifth), so I don't really think that Drake has been all that bad at developing receivers. He's just a victim of getting stuck with shit with which to work.

As has Tice and he's been able to develop a guy or two. I would say Bennett is the most complete wr. Bradley was a 2nd round draft choice that also didn't work out or wasn't developed. I love Knox but Drake has to develop his route running and demand that he fight for the ball more. If your going to have a mad Martz offense you need really good wr's and if you don't have that you need a better position coach than Drake.

I'm not all that down on Drake either but I look at it slightly different. Top notch "road ready" WR are tough to find and taking one high is a big risk ala guys like David Terrell or Big Mike Williams. If you're lucky enough to get a Larry Fitzgerald, a Roy Williams, or a Calvin Johnson they really don't need all that much developmental coaching. First round WR's are pretty much boom or bust picks IMO.

To me it's the work you do with those mid round guys that tests your coaching skills and Drake hasn't done a bad job with that. He's made pretty good WR's out of guys like BB, Bennett, and Knox plus even Hester has turned into a fair wideout. He's not ever gonna be a true #1 type of guy but like Willie Gault in the 80's whenever he's on the field you have to account for him or he can burn you.

My guess is that if they thought he wasn't doing his job that the Bears would have parted company with him a while back.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

You basically echoed my sentiments, soul. I should have probably listed Earl Bennett in there with the other receivers as well as Hester, but didn't as an oversight.
