I'd agree that he could play either and that is a good thing since AA is now in his 30's but when you watch him play he's a far better penetrator than he is a stack and shed kind of DT.

This draft got a B+ grade from me and I'd have given it an A if we hadn't taken Enderle in the 5th. It wasn't a bad pick player wise but not the right pick position wise after we traded our 4th unless there was absolutely no Olineman worth taking at that spot.
Conte is the first true FS we've taken in recent memory and not a bad pick at that spot. If he eventually becomes the starter at FS will the guys who downgraded this draft to a C once that happened go back and regrade it, LOL. Probably not.
We got the LB we needed in the 6th and we have no idea of how good Unga might be as a power back but in essence he was our 7th.
At face value this is one of the best drafts we've had since JA arrived.
In the cold light of a new day, I agree that JA did a pretty good job all in all.
The first 2 picks couldn't have been any better--clear A+ for 1 & 2. We lucked out on Carimi falling to us w/o having to move up and JA did do the right thing in trading away a 4th to ensure that we could take Paea. He wouldn't have lasted to bottom-2 (in fact, I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did). Way more secure pick than chancing your #2 on a PITA like Austin is rumored to be.
Conte in #3 was a headscratcher for many of us but I can see it a little more now. The Bears must have really liked him, assumed there was no way he would last to late-5 (he was in effect our 3/4 pick), and felt like there was a good chance that Manning is gonna leave. I would have preferred a CB (Jalil Brown or Davon House) since Nate Irving, Greg Little, Austin Pettis, & Hankerson were ALL gone, but he does help on ST and could contribute as a DB. Time will tell, but for now I'll upgrade this pick to a C+.
Enderle in #5 is where JA fell off the sanity wagon a bit. I have no beef about Enderle himself nor the reasonableness of him going in the 5th. He was probably the best QB prospect left and the Bears clearly had telegraphed interest in him beforehand. My complaint is why draft a QB (ANY QB) at all? Why use a pick when we could have picked one up post-draft? Whoever it is, the guy is just gonna ride the bench anyway (assuming he even makes the team)! It makes me a little nervous that the FO is gonna do something stupid with Hanie. The Bears would be idiots to let Hanie go. He has way more value to the Bears than he does to any other team, so sign him to a multi-year deal (which he deserves) as QB#2 and forget it! WE actually have one of the better 1-2 QB setups in the NFL and they are both YOUNG...so what is the need for drafting a developmental replacement??? I still have to give this pick an F, not for the player, but for the position chosen.
JT Thomas in #6 seems like a solid choice for a Tampa-2 LB and we did need some depth there so I give this a B+.
The first 2 picks being the most important, all in all, the Bears did pretty well. If Conte pans out, it will become VERY WELL. I guess there was a lot of disappointment with the #3 & #5 picks cuz those first 2 were such home-runs. I was hoping for an OG/C and a CB in those rounds, but the FO must not have liked the talent that was available. One thing is absolutely clear here going into FA (whenever that happens): The offense needs additional help.
We need a big-target WR and we need an experienced, solid OG esp. given the DTs Detroit is gonna throw at us.

Who really knows about the QB pick except for the fact that JA said ahead of time they'd take one. I'd say it's just a little insurance against injury plus a guy who Martz, or his successor, can develop. He may never play a down for the Bears but if he shows potential we can always pedal him for picks later on like the Pats and Packers have done with their developmental guys. Shoot, the Pats got a 1st for Cassel.

Plus, don't forget Hanie had to have impressed some teams in the NFC championship game, and I know the Redskins didn't get anybody, so maybe next year he might be up for grabs. I think they drafted him for both developing "our own guy" as well as knowing Hanie's got enough talent to start SOMEWHERE.

I'm glad JA changed his tendencies to trade down and traded up. Picks 3-6 felt more like JA/Ruskell was placating the coaching staff-Hoke, Martz, Babich. Was nice to see us get a break and land Carimi. I think Paea will give us a decent pass rush platooned w/Melton AND more run stuffing.
The whole qb thing is just odd. Just seems like a repeat of drafting Lefevour instead of getting a O-lineman for the second straight year! I know they would like to grow their own qb but a backup C or G is more likely to make the team AND provide depth than drafting a qb. Can't assume another FA signing like Peppers or that we are going to win a OG derby.
I think the draft is a solid B.

JA wants to develop a QB so he never has to pay through the nose again like he did for Cutler. Right now Hanie is doing just what he should be. Playing #2 and learning more about the game. He doesn't have Cutler's arm but he's mobile and tough and as perfect a backup as the Bears could ask for IMO.
He's worth a lot more as a keeper right now since he's proven that he can run the offense under pressure. I wouldn't trade him for anything right now. Enderle has Cutler's arm but reps less than sterling accuracy and no mobility so he still a work in progress and not a guy you want doing anything more than running the scout team and learning right now.

Another day down the line, I'm so frigging happy about Carimi and Paea, we could have drafted a QB in the fifth for all I care.
Oh, wait...
No, seriously though, Carimi (check out the draft room vid on the Bears site... never seen Lovie that pumped.. good to see some excitement from him) and Paea were that good I can forgive Angelo's annual brain fart in the fifth (did he pander to Martz on this one?), even if it did cost us a shot at a half decent guard or corner. At least he recovered somewhat with the Thomas pick in the sixth.
Like someone else said, I think this is at first glance Jerry's best draft in a long time, possibly ever. Just a shame it's taken years of turds and duds to get to this point.

I'm still pissed at the 5th round draft pick selection... why go QB when you obviously need to develop young OFFENSIVE LINEMEN. Instead of Quarterbacks when you have a franchise QB and a proven back up QB.
It's not like I can do anything about Jerry's decision to draft him. I'm not saying he's a bad player, I'm just upset with the choice to draft a QB.
Free agency isn't always the answer to look for linemen, you need to develop young linemen in your system.

There are also plenty of options out there for players that are CB in free agency too, MP. The most notable for us who probably fits our scheme would be Ike Taylor. He won't break the bank like Asomugha would and he's been a rock for the Steelers for five years now on what is year-in and year-out the best defensive unit in the NFL.

That only happened because Cassel played a full season for the Patriots back in 2008 when Tom Brady was injured and performed quite well. The only way that we would get that kind of attention in kind is if Cutler, God forbid, went down with an injury, and say Hanie were around and couldn't get the job done. in essence, Enderle would have to become our starting quarterback by default.
