Trouble is we didn't have enough ammunition to pull off all of the trades we needed to move up. That and the fact that we couldn't use a players for picks strategy either limited what we could do. We've still got FA to go whenever that starts and you just know they're gonna get at least one more vet Olineman there and one or two more from the rookie UDFA's.

Seems like this year he listened more to some guys who can evaluate talent. Tice got his, Marinelli got his, I'm gonna credit Conte to JA because this pick has him written all over it even though Hoke touted the guy, and Martz got his QB, and Toub got a potential ST monster in Thomas. Equal opportunity draft this year. I think you're right about JA ability to judge rookies well but I will give him credit for listening to sharper guys this year. You can see it pretty plainly.

CWill has the potential to be a good lineman once they settle on keeping him somewhere. Even though last year was his 3rd his injury and position changes have really hampered his development IMO. I think he can play far better than he's been able to show so far but I do agree that this year will be a make it or break chance for him.

I think some of the picks are no brainers but the Conte pick makes me shake my head. It seems to me that we should have added more to the OL or WRs if anything.

I just think the Oline guys he may have wanted in three like Wisnieski, Moffitt, etc. were off the board and Tice couldn't give him a good value guy with that pick or I think he might have. Don't know about the WR thing but I'm betting they were looking at DB's and couldn't find a CB that rated out as well as Conte did at FS so that along with Hokes blessing became the pick.
I think they knew they'd take some grief for it but still thought Conte was the BPA at #93. One thing for sure is the kid is gonna have a lot more pressure to succeed on his shoulders than either Carimi or Paea.

exactly soul, when ask what lineman or cb's get no answer bak, which is the answer.. draft just broke relly bad in 3rd round and took the 3 olineman and 3 wr's probbly were targeting.. it happens.. do not think a mistake at all
BTW BOTH the later lineman, Zane talyor and tim barnes, some people were claomoring for in 4th-6th rounds-are UDFA's so we can still add either for back up center now when rules go back in place

they have been trying to find their "perfect" fit for a safty since JA got here. Other then being gifted Mike Brown not one guy stood out of the bunch. Im high on Wright and Manning looked good after 5 years of development. I think it is time to question their scouting reports on safeties looking at our success record getting them.

I think now that Tice has his ear all of that will change. Tice said that he'd love to have Carimi and when he got close they were willing
to even make a trade to get him. When has that ever happened before? I also think he gave Tice some choices in the later rounds but Tice didn't like anybody who was still on the board and would rather take his chances in FA or with what he has now.
In reality would any of us know if a 5th or 6th round Oline pick would be any better than guys like Johnson, Louis or EWill who've at least had some expereince in camp and games. Taking a late round guy who can't even grade out higher than the dregs of your line isn't a smart move either but in the past I believe that just what JA would have done before Tice came along.
I look to the past two years as an example. Without higher picks for a starting caliber lineman last year Tice found his guy in the 7th and actually made headway with him last year. This year he gets his starter in round one and can find no one he wants later on but if it all works out the way it's headed we just got two young starting OT's in the last two drafts. JA didn't become a better evaluator of OT's he just listened to someone who was. For that I give him credit.
Im not whining of what happens in rounds 5-7. I think it is our money picks from 1-3 and 50/50 on 4 as not that big of a deal but still should be able to find a role player. I think in the third we could have got another piece to something that could make a difference. Conte doesnt mean crap. And you are high on Webb and they got him in the 7th(even though I think he stinks). If that is the case they can find someone in the 5th right lol ? Im still hung on them screwing up the 3 pick to give two shits about a 5th rounder. The only time I pine on a 5th rounder is like when we skipped on Nicks when I wanted him in the second thinking we could get a steal now.

Looks like Darryl Drake was the odd man out this draft and the draft before that.
Took 3 WR's in the 2009 draft...Iglesias in the third, Knox in the fifth, Kinder in the seventh.
