2011 bear udfa wish list for camp

figure on a slow saturday, would put together a "wish list" and 8 person list would like to see bears extend camp invites and UDFA contracts to when allowed:

usc center kris o'dowd- some concerns about injury made him fall out of draft, we need a back up for kreutz

miss C tim barnes - again think its a position of need so having 2 center's brought in would be a good idea, suprising UDFA many had a 5th -6th round grade on

S.C. Ot/OG jariel king- a 6'5" 317 lineman that has played both guard and tackle and would be some nic depth in tice size lineman

LSU WR Lawrence toliver- 6'4", ran a 4.52 at the combine, has some off field issues and why went undrafted- but well worth a camp tryout at 6'4"

Pine bluff WR Raymond Webber- a 6'2'' WR, that caught 100+ passes for 1,200+ yards in 2010, but little known, well worth a camp look

UNC CB Kendric burney- a good coverage CB, but lacks top end speed( 4.75 at combine), could be a good depth player and ST'er

BC linebacker Mark herzlich- a feel good story of overcoming Cancer, after missing 2009, came back slow in 2010, but improved at the end if year.. Can play both SLB and MLB..

fla punter Chas Henry- for sox,lol- bring in another camp leg and henry led nation with a 45.1 YPP ..with 68 downed inside the 20... only negative is will need to change his steps from 3 to 2 for the NFL and why went undrafted, imo

Who do posters think the bears should target in the UDFA market?

Like the size of those wr's. Our guys might fit what Martz likes to run; but it's not what our QB likes to throw to...have to make adjustments to the system and stop fitting square pegs into round wholes. Give JC at least 1 big guy to throw to in a jam, and the other guys will do just fine. Like the C's and OG/T also; big boy like that; if he has any talent Tice will find it.

Yep- just think we need a bigger wr and not another 5'10-6'0 WR... and even if go after floyd in F/A.. bringing in a few of these taller UDFA's a good idea and see if can catch lightning in a bottle.. most likely get nothing, but think big WR's would love the chance to work with jay and be his new Brandon marshall, and would be a good fir them to try here.

and yeah, the lineman may need work( its why UDFA's), but stocking up on them smart now, and vreate some good camp battles.Tice can figure the best 9..

10/2/10: I've been impressed with Linnenkohl on tape. He seems to be a fluid athlete laterally especially in pass protection, but it takes him a while to get to the second level. He looks like a developmental starter.

they were options 4 and 5.. figured 2 centers in o'dowd and barnes was enough : ) not bad options either though jeff

Great list.

Agree that giving a look at Centers like Barnes, Linnenkohl, O'Dowd, Kirkpatrick, and Taylor should be a priority since we didn't get a chance to draft a guy like Wisniewski or Moffitt. That's a sizable collection of guys at only one position who were thought to be late-draft material and all fell through. We might be able to find a sleeper in there who could pay dividends down the road.

Secondly, (and I know that no one is going to be of help right away here) a big developmental WR prospect warrants a look. Terrance Tolliver has the size and decent speed and surprisingly went undrafted, so I would favor starting there. As with the C's, the prime 2nd-tier big wideouts like Hankerson, Little, and Pettis all eluded us by our 3rd round pick. I was hoping Stephen Burton, who's another small-school (West TX A&M) physically impressive potential, would fall out of the draft but he went late-6 I think.

Lastly, its hard not to root for a gutsy guy like Herzlich to get a shot somewhere...I hope he does and continues to regain his athletic abilities. LB is prob a lesser need for the Bears though since it looks like we may have nabbed a real hidden gem with JTT in the 6th.

The OG and CB classes were picked pretty bare in the first half of the draft so I don't see much of interest there.

The original list is a good one. For me, Herzlich's name is one of the stand out names in it. I think having him at camp would be a dream for some of the hacks at the Trib and Sun Times, plus he was improving more and more as the season went on, with the draft coming a little early for him. Like someone else said, I hope he gets his chance somewhere, hopefully here. If he wasn't to make the cut it wouldn't be for lack of effort and commitment.
UDFA's are a lottery, but it would definitely make sense to load up on some of the centers and big receivers mentioned and see if we can cut our odds of finding someone who can make the roster and give us some depth or, even better, a spark.
