    Bears' linebacker situation unclear

    Bears' linebacker situation unclear

NFL lockout muddles plans for dealing with Tinoisamoa, Roach, Iwuh and Wilson

By Dan Pompei and Brad Biggs, Tribune Reporters 11:47 p.m. CDT, May 17, 2011

Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs are good enough to make the tackles of three linebackers, and if the season started tomorrow they would need to be.

That's because the Pro Bowl stars of the Bears are the only players at their positions the team has under contract. Of course, the team will sign more linebackers between now and when the NFL is ready to start playing games.

Who those linebackers are, however, remains one of the biggest questions for the Bears.

Pisa Tinoisamoa, Nick Roach, Brian Iwuh and Rod Wilson all had expiring contracts that coincided with the NFL's labor impasse.

"To me, you look at how close we came to the Super Bowl and you look at the guys who helped us get there," said Briggs after an appearance for Gatorade at Brother Rice High School. "When the lockout is over, we'll go get these guys.

"All of those guys — and you have Anthony Adams, Danieal Manning — are a vital part of our success. We need to make sure these guys are going to be Bears and they're going to help us win a championship."

Adding to the uncertainty is the health status of Tinoisamoa, who started 10 games alongside Briggs and Urlacher last season.

Tinoisamoa, who will turn 30 in July, had a third surgery on his right knee earlier this offseason. The surgery was to repair wear and tear, and from all indications Tinoisamoa is doing well in his rehabilitation and strength building. He was sidelined three games after arthroscopic surgery in early December and he missed nearly all of the 2009 season after injuring the knee twice.

His intention clearly is to play this season, but no one can say for sure if he will be ready for the pounding of training camp. Even in a best case scenario this summer, Tinoisamoa likely would need a modified practice schedule for training camp.

The Bears cannot sign Tinoisamoa because of the lockout, and they might not want to because they can't be sure about his knee. His chances of returning might be enhanced if the lockout continues into July or longer because then the Bears will need a starter who knows their system, and Tinoisamoa might have enough time to prove his knee is ready for an NFL season.

Another strong option — especially after a protracted work stoppage — is Roach. He started six games in 2010 and has started 30 in his career. He turns 26 next month and has played mostly on the strong side.

"They make us the best linebacking corps in the game," Briggs said. "When you need a Pisa, you need a Nick. When you need a Nick, you need a Pisa. You have to have both of them."

The NFC North rival Lions are holding player-run practices this week with about 35 in attendance. The Saints and Cowboys have had workouts with more than 40 players in attendance. The Bears have yet to do so and it's difficult to quantify what value — if any — such practices have.

"Those teams feel like they need to do that," Briggs said. "I don't think us being on the field defensively now versus after the (lockout ends) is going to make us a better or a worse defense. We're all working out, being ready, being prepared for the lockout to be over. That is what is important."

Lance Briggs on workout bonus, lockout

By Brad Biggs, Tribune reporte 8:48 a.m. CDT, May 18, 2011

When Lance Briggs works out during the NFL lockout, it’s because he wants to be as prepared as possible to go to work when the labor mess is finally resolved.
Ordinarily, there would be a payoff for Briggs at the end of the Chicago Bears’ voluntary offseason workout program. His contract calls for him to receive a $250,000 workout bonus if he has 85 percent attendance. What will happen to that contract clause and many similar ones is a matter that will eventually be sorted out in the protracted dispute that now is most certainly headed into June if not deeper into the summer.

But Briggs, who made an appearance on behalf of Gatorade on Tuesday at Brother Rice High School, isn’t overly concerned even though his workout bonus is far greater than the tip money some players receive for such clauses.

I would certainly like to have my workout bonus," Briggs said. "It is definitely a lot of money. But this whole deal is bigger than my offseason workout bonus. I want to see the lockout end so we can get back to playing football, not just because I want a workout bonus. I don't know how all of that is going to work out.”

Some players around the league have been increasingly critical of commissioner Roger Goodell. Indianapolis Colts defensive end Robert Mathis recently said Goodell has lost the players.

“I really have no comment on that,” Briggs said. “I stay away from that stuff. It’s out of my hands, man. I know who is representing the players in the court case and I know who is representing the owners. That’s as far as I go.”

Really, Briggs just wants to get back to football. Sure, as a nine-year veteran he enjoys some additional time in the offseason like free-agent center Olin Kreutz told the Tribune last week. But Briggs enjoys the game and he enjoys being around his teammates. He’s also been one of the players who’s been in favor of taking the game to an international level. He got his wish when the schedule was released and the Bears were given a game at London’s Wembley Stadium vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That game will be played Oct. 23. But the NFL has announced that if no labor agreement is in place by Aug. 1, the game will be shifted to Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium.

“I’d love to be a part of going to London and playing football over there,” Briggs said. “All of that stuff is out of my hands right now. Right now, I am just trying to get prepared for when the day comes. I don’t have a whole lot on the lockout. The lockout is what it is.”

And in some of his free time, he’s been working with young athletes like the ones at Brother Rice.

“It’s nice to get out and be actively involved with the kids here,” he said. “I talked about the importance of hydration and nutrition. It’s not something that I talk about all the time, it’s so kind of ingrained, it’s a lifestyle.”

To me it's not that big of a deal. Roach is tendered so I don't see him going anywhere and Pisa is once again coming off an injury and is rehabbing. No one is gonna offer Pisa much of anything and I think if the Bears want him they can probably get him with another 1 year deal similar to his last contract.

Wilson is expendable but I do hope they decide to keep Iwuh for his ST work if no other reason. If we can accomplish this we'll have 5 vet LB's under contract and one rookie. Six LB's is all the active roster can handle anyway and this fills those spots best IMO.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

yeah think its another trying to make a mountain out of not even a molehill.: )

Pisa if bears want him will sign another 1 yr deal( as no tem is going to take him off another injury),, roach either is a RFA, or if a f/A can still see him staying because, whre else would he play next to 2 Probowlers?.. That has to count for something and iwuh the same

going to be interesting to see if this drags into july and no time for workout's.. will the teams just not pay the workout bonuses? or will they pay them anyway( because mostly to their star players who they want to keep happy)

I think they will not pay them, because they did not work out. Sucks for the players.

Workout bonuses is a horrible worded phrase for contracts for this exact reason. In the future, they might change it to another roster bonus.
