Davis trying to organize player workouts

Would like twice weekly gatherings until NFL labor issues are resolved, perhaps at Allstate Arena

By Vaughn McClure, Tribune Reporter 7:02 p.m. CDT, March 24, 2011

Rashied Davis is unsure about his future but the Bears alternate player rep and pending unrestricted free agent is certain he wants to help the Bears be ready if NFL labor issues are decided in time for a 2011 season.

The wide receiver, who's a key special teams contributor, intends to help organize quarterbacks and receivers for workouts within the next few weeks as the NFL owners' lockout is keeping players from Halas Hall.

Quarterback Caleb Hanie first reached out to Davis about the possibility of the throwing some balls around, while Davis has had constant communication with fellow receivers Johnny Knox and Devin Hester. Last year, the Bears started their voluntary offseason workouts March 29.

"Everybody has a cellphone, right? We'll figure something out,'' said Davis, who has been working out at Warehouse Boxing Gym & Boxing Club in Highland Park and TCBOOST in Northbrook.

"The problem is with running routes, it's hard to find a field big enough. I'm going to personally try to find one.''

Davis, of course, would want Jay Cutler to lead these workouts, if they materialize, and if Cutler is healed from the second-degree knee sprain he suffered in the NFC title game.

Davis, who started his pro career in the Arena Football League, is interested in the Rush's main practice facility inside Allstate Arena. He played Arena ball in San Jose alongside Rush coach Bob McMillen.

Rush officials said they would be open to the idea and even joked Davis and crew could have helped them with two-a-days.

Getting approval from Allstate Arena management shouldn't be an insurmountable problem.

"If the field is down and the Rush is OK with it, it would be find with us,'' said Pat Nagle, the stadium's general manager.

Nagle explained each player would have to sign a standard injury waiver. Some of the Blackhawks have skated at Allstate in the past when ice was down for the Wolves.

If Davis gets his wish, he would like to see the quarterbacks and receivers gather at least twice a week until a new collective bargaining agreement is reached.

really like this idea, and hadn't really thought about using the arean league stuff and even some of their players to help- would work for both sides, players get the fodder they need for drills and the arena guys "maybe" get some tips and exposure to next level

I applaud these two players with unknown futures with the bears for stepping up and taking some initiative to plan some qb/wr workouts... they say its business as usual for the staff at halas hall so it should be the same for the players on refining their craft.

There should be plenty of football fields in Chicago big enough to host Bears workouts of this nature. Nice to see vets like Davis taking the initiative.

I like the innitiative of all who go through with this. However, on the radio they were talking about how they'd need to be careful. If they get injured in these non team approved/associated workouts teams could classify it as a non football relates injury and use that to terminate the their contract

yeah, but the chance of a serious injury in non-contact practices really really low.. and can't imagine a team, for what more likely would be a non serious, hammy pull or strain or something that isnt serious or long term cut the guy, esp for the Bad publicity that would happen. technically they could, but from a PR and getting back to football side, can't imahine a team would risk that

You are absolutely correct. As if the owners are not looking bad enough right now in the midst of the lockout, they would look really shitty if they cut a player who was attempting to stay in playing shape while the league was barring them from the team practice and training facilities.

Maybe Wrigley Field would be available. Season's just started so the Cubs should be out of it by now.
