allegedly began with his refusal to pay his bill at a nightclub in Miami Beach might end up being much more costly for Bears free-agent running back Garrett Wolfe.
The former Holy Cross High School and Northern Illinois star was arrested early Sunday and charged with retail theft, disorderly conduct, assault-
ing a police officer and resisting arrest with violence, according to Miami-Dade County Police Department records and Miami Beach Police detective Juan Sanchez. His bond has been set at $11,500.
He became aggressive while being ejected by bouncers, and two off-duty officers were summoned,’’ Sanchez said. ‘‘They gave him the opportunity to settle his bill, and he refused. He attacked one of the officers. Both officers suffered minor injuries.’’ ‘‘I’m one of those guys caught in limbo,’’ Wolfe told the Sun-Times last week. ‘‘I’ve finished my fourth year; technically, I’m a free agent. But with no [collective-bargaining agreement] and under the terms from last year, I’m not a free agent, so I’m caught in between. If we get a CBA figured out, I’ll be a free agent; but if we don’t, I’m not a free agent. I’m just stuck in between.’’

BTW an update, it was a $1,600 tab( ouch!)..players w/o jobs/contracts shouldn't be racking up stuff like that...
The club contends Wolfe refused to pay a $1,600 tab. That’s when bouncers removed him and police were called. According to Miami Beach Police Det. Juan Sanchez, Wolfe became angry with Cameo employees and
“charged the officers.” http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/...re-arrest.html Are you shitting me? He's blaming the LOCKOUT for his issues? As Michael Caine said in Austin Powers: Goldmember: "If you've got an issue, use a tissue!"

Read it more carefully Dags. Those comments in the Sun-Times came a week before this incident in Florida. He's not blaming the lockout for it.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

My bad. I missed the part where it said that he talked with the Sun-Times last week.

Felony charges dropped against ex-Bears RB Wolfe
By Vaughn McClure Tribune reporter 2:32 p.m. CDT, June 21, 2011
Former Chicago Bears running back Garrett Wolfe no longer faces felony charges stemming from his May 22 arrest at a Miami Beach, Fla., nightclub.
Wolfe originally was charged with retail theft, disorderly conduct, assault of a police officer and resisting an officer with violence after authorities said he refused to pay a bar tab of nearly $1,600 at Cameo. Wolfe’s arraignment was Tuesday morning, although he did not have to appear.
A representative from the Miami-Dade circuit clerk’s office said felony charges were not filed in the case. Christopher Lyons, Wolfe’s defense attorney, confirmed the news.
Lyons explained that the state’s attorney’s office announced a "no action" in the case Tuesday, essentially dropping the felony charges. There was no action taken against original felony charges of grand theft and resisting an officer with violence and a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.
The resisting an officer with violence charge was amended to a one-count misdemeanor resisting an officer with violence.
Speaking on behalf of Wolfe, Lyons said he was pleased with the state's attorney's decision and called it a "major victory'' in the case. He expected the misdemeanor charge left against Wolfe to be resolved in the next 30 to 60 days.
Wolfe could not be reached for comment, but he pleaded not guilty from the start. He was not known to have a criminal history prior to the Miami incident.

Glad to hear that Wolfe may get out of this scot-free. I hated to hear from the beginning that he got in trouble to begin with. Thus, our judicial system works as an "innocent until proven guilty" system yet again....

Yeah, look at what it did during the O.J. Simpson Murder Trial! lol.
In all seriousness, though, the media does look to skewer professional and amateur athletes, particularly in football and basketball. I know here in Knoxville, the media really jumps on the meat wagon when UT athletes are arrested for committing crimes of any sort. Sometimes those charges are dropped, but the media just absolutely crucifies them before they have their say in court or before the university has an opportunity to properly investigate the matter.
