Chicago Bears Torry Holt as player-coach?

    Well more coach than player...

but who better to teach the Martz system?

    What do you think?

That would certainly be nice, but I don't think Lovie and JA are going to fire Darryl Drake just to bring Torry Holt in as a coach for wide receivers.

It would have been nice a season ago w/Martz coming in. An extra teacher and eventual replacement for Drake. Hell he could have taken Wolfe's or R.Davis spot. He could be an extra position coach-why not.

I don't see the purpose of bringing in Holt if we're to eventually replace Martz with Mike Tice as offensive coordinator.

I would say the purpose of bringing him in would be either to replace Drake, assist incoming or existing wr's in the system, and to help develop wr's. An extra coach like that wouldn't hurt and wouldn't be prohibitively expensive.

Yeah, but look at it this way: if Martz goes, what is the likely hood that Mike Tice is promoted to OC, and that he would want one of Martz's cronies? Tice will want to bring in his own men to train the WR. I'm not saying that Torry Holt wouldn't be adequate for the job, but he's basically going to serve as Mike Martz's right hand man. It's not as if Martz doesn't have enough control over what Lovie Smith chooses to do anyway. He's the reason why we didn't beat the Packers the last two times we played them.

    how do you know

    a) that holt even wants to coach or can? the NFL and all sports littered with great players that make awful coaches

    b) that we would come "cheap", esp after his last contract( when on last legs still was $13-20 mill/3 years in 2009)

Receiver Torry Holt and Jaguars agree to 3-year deal

Contract is worth $13 million, could be worth as much as $20 million with incentives.

Holt's deal with the Jaguars includes a base salary of $4 million (all guaranteed) for the upcoming season, in addition to salaries of $4 million and $5 million in 2010 and 2011.

I didn't think about the part that Torry Holt might make a horrible coach. For example, look at Mike Singletary. He was a great MLB, but a horrible head coach. I think that's a good example to throw out there.

I"m not even saying he should be a verifiable "coach" yet. Money spent on him could be better than that of Manu. Would he make a good coach? Don't know but being an assistant to an assistant is some role or another isn't the apocalypse and just a thought on a slow Thurs.

and just pointing Out he was slated to make $5 mill with jaguars this year- so unlike a college coach making $60,000- they are coming from 2 completely different world's- and easy to see a college coach taking a WR job or even an assitant job and looking down the road to a big pay day and willing to put the "grinding time" in now in teaching, tape watching 60-100 hrs a week as required of an NFL assistant.. then a hall of fame WR, who's made $70 mill+ in his career, just made $5 mill last year,,, accepting a menial position and 1/100th the pay and being good at it- Just IMO, while sounds nice in theory, reality is much, much different. Personally think Holt will not coach, and make 10X more as an analyst for espm or nfl.com in the fall for a much easier and less time consuming gig- then again tory STILL WANTS TO PLAY:

“I haven’t retired,” Holt said. “I’m going to continue to keep my options open. I’m training right now. So if something comes about — great. If not, hey, the NFL Network has been good to me. They gave me an opportunity to talk football, stay around the game. We’ll see.”
