That, I'm afraid, was the Packers 2.0 version of a zone defense, if I had to guess what one looks like in a 3-4 defensive setup. They, just as you said, were waiting back to see what Hanie was all about. Hanie nearly outsmarted one of the finest defensive minds in the league (Don Capers), but ultimately, that pick six killed them. I think the difference in offensive coordinators for us, with say a guy like Mike Martz and another one like, say, Mike Tice, would have been that Tice would have run a draw play up the middle to give us some breathing room to work with kicking wise since it was 3rd Down, while Martz, ever the riverboat gambler, went for broke and chucked it across the middle. This is PRECISELY why I don't like Mike Martz's play calling. I don't like his playcalling because he cost us three wins during the regular season, and I don't like his playcalling because it ultimately cost us the NFC Championship Game. He didn't run the ball until the second half, when it was damn near to late to do so, and because of that, we couldn't keep possession of the ball like we needed.

Ya everyone loves Martz b/c of the wins...but his offense was one of the worst we have had in recent years; and he's had more talent then most OC's we've had this decade.

I'd agree that the choice of that play that deep in your own territory at that point in the game and with what was essentially a rookie QB was not the best call that Martz could have made. But the great thing is that Hanie didn't let it eat him up. He kept his composure and he kept us in the game right up until the end.

I couldn't agree more. He could have gone and dug a hole in the ground and played the part the ostrich, but he toughed it out and nearly brought us back to win.
As a cruel irony, Mike Martz must want this kid to fail, because he sure drew up the ultimate scenario for it to happen. Luckily, Hanie is too strong willed to let something like that hold him back.

You know what I think. I think a lot of it has to do with Martz ego and his rep for developing QB's. He's stuck with the franchise in Cutler but may improve him to an all-pro status but that's not exactly a miracle. Hanie was here before he arrived so he's not a Martz guy. The reason the Bears have taken late round QB's the last two years is to get Martz his project guy. Someone he can do the equivalent of turning a bag boy in a supermarket into an all-pro QN from scratch. Few talk about Martz's ego but he has a big one and that's one of the reasons he wasn't the Bears first choice and why he was still around for them to sign. He has that rep of needing to always do it his way.

Martz is a total douche in my opinion. (Yes, 4th, I totally agree with you on this!) At what point does Lovie Smith say, "Enough is enough," when it comes to Martz having so much pull over who we draft? We don't need a stable of quarterbacks that will see most of them get cut or put on waivers! I have said this before in other threads, but Lovie needs to cut Martz loose because the offense actually did worse last season than it did in 2009, and his "ego" did not do a damn thing to help the team other than nearly burying it for good before the midway point of the season.

WTF? You people are talking about the Bears right? The Division Champs for this very year right? The team that had the best record in the division and was in the playoffs correct? So then you take a few plays from a single bad game and suddenly the Bears staff is the worst ever? Get real. It sounds like some people will never settle for anything short of the SuperBowl. There is only one winner of that each year, and it wasn't the Bears. But they were still the best in the division and had a decent record didn't they? Settle down and be happy this isn't the Lions site we're on.

Sorry, but losing 2 games due to bad offensive gamecalling that lost us the chance at the SB renders the NFC north championship moot
