The Caleb Hanie Thread

When Cutler left the game against the Packers, Collins played horribly — just as he had in the regular season. When Hanie replaced Collins, he played well enough to spark the Bears and make the game interesting. So why was Collins ahead of Hanie on the depth chart, when Hanie had been ahead of Collins late in the regular season?

“It’s a touchy subject to answer,” Hanie told David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune. “I was told [the demotion to No. 3] happened in practice during the [off] week. Not that I did bad but that Todd maybe ran things more efficiently. I think the experience factor had a lot to do with it.”

Hanie acknowledges that he was angry when he found out he was the No. 3 quarterback.

“I was obviously mad but you don’t let that alter the way you go about your business,” Hanie said.

Honestly, if he falls back to number 3 again this year, and the Bears haven't improved dramatically over the 30th best Show on Turf, Martz really needs to be introduced to Ron Turner, Terry Shea and John Shoop. Or just be demoted to WR coach...

Marinelli improved the D by taking over, he def. gets a pass. Tice is showing that with what little parts he had at the beginning of the last year, he may have produced a gem (Webb) and at the end, adequate to good play.

You might want to watch how you word your sentences, jackie. I got a warning because I used that word a couple of times despite the fact that other people were using it as well.

Anyhoo, back to a real Caleb Hanie thread....Dag, you brought up a pretty interesting point in another one, about the running game picking up when Cutler was out and maybe that's why they didn't unleash on Hanie. You would think that with an inexperienced guy they might try to knock him out too, but then again, waiting for those mistakes are what good defensive coordinators do.

The only justification that I could find for it is just what they told Hanie. In practice Collins ran the offense more efficiently, LOL, whatever that means. Did it mean that he knew the offense better so his play calling was more efficient? Since they were going to run the ball more by Lovie's and Tice's mandate did it mean that Collins as a better ball handler?

Did anyone think to consider that Collins may have done fine at the 3/4 tempo of practice but would his old arse and reflexes not have been quite so effcient under game time conditions and speed? All I know is that even signing Collins was a boner. It was a coincidence that he was even on the team. Had Hanie not been hurt in preseason Collins would never have even seen a Bears uni and LeFevour would be the developmental guy rather than Enderle.

Exactly what did "more efficient" mean since there was no way that Collins could possibly have been a better or more accurate thrower than Hanie? Was it just a concession given to Martz since he was told that he was gonna be running the ball a lot more for the rest of the season? Kind of a let's mollify Martzy thing? Well thank God it's in the past and Hanie is now firmly ensconced as #2 and with that I feel very comfortable with our QB situation. If Cutler goes down I have every confidence that Hanie will step in and do well.

Can't the Bears just sign Rex Grossman as backup QB and trade Hanie for a 6th or 7th round pick? :smile:

If I never see that small hands/brain midget fumbling and throwing int's in a Bears uni, I'll still be haunted by those past 4 years till I die.

As for Haine, this team has a bad problem of player evaluation b/c of "practice"; and not enough of eval on game tape. I hope this finally teaches them a lesson. It doesn't matter how great a work out worrior is, if they cannot produce on the field, and I'm talking 0 talent, I'm talking Collins, Chutch etc, it doesn't matter how they look in practice you sit their ass for someone that can produce on the field, IE Haine.

Last offseason I said Haine would be fine b/c Cutler was doesn't get hurt(didn't know the OL would be that bad), and Haine would be healthy by that time. Haine has skills, and should have been groomed as the 2 from the get go. But once someone gets on this staff's shit side, or showed them to be wrong, there is no coming out of it. Lets hope Martz just had a hard on for a vet and sees he didn't need one
