The Top 100 Players of All Time or of 2011? I was going to say that I don't remember ever seeing Urlacher in the Top 100 of all time, but it's ranked at #49 on the current players, that is far too low.

Top 100 of 2011 as voted by the players. I thought #49 was low for 'Lach as well... (note: added link to my previous post, I'm software challenged so it took some time.)

Thanks for the link. It was my oversight, really, in not seeing your link. Lovie Smith gave a good presentation, and I think that had Urlacher not had a rough three seasons between the Super Bowl and this last last year, he probably is ranked higher than he is. He is, I would imagine, the highest ranked Bear aside from maybe Julius Peppers.

Do you think that maybe Halas traded his soul to the devil for the opportunity to get both Sayers and Butkus? Seems like we had a lot of bad drafts following that right up until the old man died.
Think its just the cyclical nature of Sports- and that the mid 1960's was the "tipping point" of league going big, and bigger money, bigger scouting and teams using GM's, Scout's etc became big, and Halas, being Halas- kept all things too close to vest, and when Allen left( who had ben doing alot of the scouting), created a bad void, that halas thought he could go back and fill himself( and of course save some $$), and it didn't work- also the conflict of the AFL giving bigger $$$ and halas of course thinking he just needed to say "chicago bears" and all woudl folk here, didn't help

That NFL list has some very odd choices- think its supposed to be top players of 2011, but its not consistent in how they rank them at all

Losing George Allen was one of the worst things that happened after that 63 Championship. It ranks right up there with Buddy Ryan leaving to coach Philly after the 86 Super Bowl. I remember my Dad still talking about that Allen deal years after as the Bears never seemed to recover from it and Green Bay dominated.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

yep- and the Sad part was Allen fiercely loyal and wanted to be the HC and stay, but halas kept jerking him around..until finally left

Butkus wasn't too shabby at rushing the passer either according to what that article said.
