mcmahon was still a better Qb( albeit breaking down more by 1988)- in 1987, whem hrbaugh drafted still has mcmahon and tomzack #1 and #2, and harbaugh the #3 QB, and honestly in 1988 camp harbaugh wasn't looking very good ( or in season when played hd a 65 qb rating in limited time), he took awhile to adjust to the NFL game, as why too until late 1989 to take over from tomzack

I've read www.bearshistory.com and Wikipedia, and neither ever said anything about it except that in 1986 when he was drafted, it was going to take a couple of years to get him ready for the rigors of the NFL.

He was actually drafted in 1987 and it did take some time for him to develop and maybe even longer than usual since Ditka's Bears wasn't a great place for young QB's anyway. Ditka tore those guys up and only Jimmy Mac stood up to him. Tzak had to go to a shrink to get help dealing with him and Harbaugh seemed like he was in Ditka's dog house right from the start. If I remember correctly it wasn't until around 1990 that he finally got his chance to start regularly.

His overall record as a pro isn't all that impressive but he did earn a rep for pulling off come from behind wins in the 4th Q when he was with Indy.

I guaran-DAMN-tee you that had Tomczak started the 1988 NFC Championship Game, the Bears probably stand a better chance of winning that game.

Tzak wasn't a bad QB but like Orton he was more of a game manager than he was a difference maker. If he'd spent most of his career away from Ditka I think he'd be more highly rated. Frankly I thought the guy deserved better too. Bringing in Flutie like that was an insult to the whole team.

think you are thinking of the 1986 game, where ditka mistakenly played "bambi flutie" over tomczak.. despite team wanting tomczak.. and Gibb smartly realized the 5' 7" Flutie, ditka had in pocket, so had his lineman just put their arms up and bt flutie's ball down all down.. just bad..we wer still winning 13-7 at 1/2 time befoer flutie fell apart in the 2n 1/2 and should ahve won that one

in 1988, mcmahon started and did OK, we just ran into a Niners "buzzsaw" that killed the bears "D" that day.. no qb was winning that game that day, niners outclassed us 28-3

According to Bears History.com, Ditka thought about using Tomczak, but instead opted for McMahon. McMahon was awful from 1986 through 1988. Really, the very thing that hurt the Bears for decades before the 1980s - the quarterback position - killed them in every playoff game from 1986 to 1988. Tomczak managed to have a decent game against the Philadelphia Eagles I do believe in '88. I'm not saying that we would have won the 1988 NFC Championship Game, just saying that there might have been more scoring on our part.

jinny mac was 7-2 and a 76 Qb rating in 1998.. tomszak was 4-1 with a 75.6 qb rating in 1998, not any different and if 'mcmahon awfuL'' so is tomszak... and i'd take mcmahon's leadeship over tomszak's any day of the week.. and while we won the eagles game in 1988, tomszak wasn't good throwing 1 TD and 3 INT's in the game, for why we switched

Why could the Bears not settle on a quarterback in those days? Why couldn't they develop one to be a solid performer? I don't know how in the blue hell they won with as pathetic quarterback play as they got.

they had a "historically great "D"" and all time great Rb and top Oline for why won... but because never got the top Qb. won a lot, but not rings.. and do think "IF" mcmahon had stayed healthy or even just didn't have the &*^^&%^%$E%$ charles martin dirty hit, we have at least one more ring in 1986
