Its a Position with a steep tradition on bears and even has a famous "D" named for one of its safeties, the 46 "D' and doug plank
1. Ritche pettibon- played strong safety in the mid and late 60's, 4 time probowler that often gets overlooked for how good he was ith butkus on team
2. Doug plank- the top hitting Safety in NFL along with night train layne, just vicious some of planks hits, if watched him..
3. Mike Brown- unfort injuries derailed what could have been a hall of fame career, to just very good, when he did play, made the whole "D" better- the best playmaking Safety in bears history
4. Gary Fencik- took over for plank and while didn't have the power or hitting of doug, made up for that with his cerebral play at Safety for a decade
5a. Ro taylor- the other probowl safety of the 1960's- a very good free safety that was before his time.
5b- mark carrier- greatest rookie year in bear history for a safety, never lived up again to that rookie year, but a solid safety for many years.
honorable mentions, dave duerson, todd bell, shuan gayle and tony parrish
who ya got?
The dvd Chicago Bears: A Tradition of Defense had Fencik and Petitbon as the starting safeties and I agree with them.
I'd go...
1) Richie Petitbon
2) Gary Fencik
3) Rosey Taylor
4) Mike Brown
5) Doug Plank
I give Taylor the edge over Brown because of longevity of his career. Plank was a hitter, but never was a Pro Bowler or All-Pro like Taylor and Brown.
Btw, in '63 Taylor had 9 INTs and Petitbon 8.

True story : During his career Plank had this nasty habit of knocking himself out with some of these hits. Bears coaches were concerned about this and told him to keep his head up when making tackles. Doug said " F'that .... just tape smelling salts to my upper lip b4 the game ". Ever experienced smelling salts ? Wow, not a pleasant experience. Now imagine having them there for 3 hours. It's insane. The man was insane.
My favorite Plank story was when he smoked Tampa Bay tight-end Jimmy Giles on a pass over the middle. Classis de-cleater. Giles later said " He hit me so hard he hurt my emotion" . Classic response LOL. !
1) Brown- best all around safety I've seen on the Bears.
2)Duerson- super smart and always in the right place.
3)Fencik- see above
4)Bell- Great hitter and solid coverage
5)Plank- Great hitter but just a tad slow
Gotta give Plank credit though. Didn't even start much when he was at Ohio State cuz he was stuck behind Tim Fox. Sure made a name for himself in the pros though. Fun to watch.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?
A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

I knew they picked off a shit load of passes that year. Davie Whitsell and Bennie McCrae had a bunch too. They just blew people away with that defense but much like recently that offense was nothing to brag about.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Back in the knuckle dragger days huh? I love it!
Next to watching Payton's drive and Sayers grace there's nothing better than watching a video of Doug Plank's hits. He must have had a head made of concrete.
