TOP CB's in BEARS HISTORY- Who ya got??

Today, we go back to the "D" side and look at th top Cb's in bears history- which once again hard to compare the less passing games of the early years, and Cb's of that era, with today's much heavier pass-centric attacks that lead to alot better stats for today's CB's, and will aslo say the extreme rule changes has also changed the position where cb's can no longer mug and decleat Wr's as could even as far alon as the 1960' and 1970's.

    1. red grange- will forever be known as if not the greatest the top 5 college player and runner. But Peopel forget he was also a very good CB, including thegame saving tackle to secure the 1933 championship 23-21 over giants, on a ply hals calls the greatest ever.

    2. Charles tillman- under-rated Cb, that does it all and one of the best at stripping ball, should have multiple probowl's over deangelo hall in 2005-2007, but always the Alternate

    3. george mcafee-"one touch mcafee" again known more for "O" ,but an outstand DB on the monster's of midway championships

4.Bennie McRae - all time leader in INT returned for td with 4, and with vasher only probowl cb's last 40 years

5A leslie fraiser- hard on the 80's "D" for the CB to make any noise after Qb's destroyd before throwing, but fraiser vry solid and will be a very good HC now

5b- donell wilford- As have said before so hard to like anything about the mid 90's but donell had some very good years

    honorable mentions

walt harris-another solid DB in late 90's

nathan vasher-a good Cb for 3 years, never the same after his injury

rw mcquarters- kknownmore for his good nickle play, tought deserved mentioned

First off shame on you for not putting Allan Ellis on your Honorable Mention list. :)

I will again go along with the dvd Chicago Bears: A Tradition of Defense and go with Grange and McAfee as the starters.

    1) Red Grange
    2) George McAfee
    3) Leslie Frazier - fantastic shutdown CB
    4) Bennie McRae
    5) Charles Tillman

Honorable Mention: Allan Ellis, Donnell Woolford.

Btw, Bennie McRae never went to a Pro Bowl. I just looked up his career stats. However, Allan Ellis did (1977).

As an aside, DaBears54, when will guards be coming up?

Also, did you read Pierson's article (1994) about his Bears All-Time Team and if so what did you think?

If you missed it here's the link again...

In addition to his choice of George Connor as RT (he played LT) I found it interesting that he only picked one WR and said Payton and Sayers would handle the other receiving duties. In one sense I can see his point. You put the best players on the field.

When I read Pierson's article last year at first I disagreed about having only one receiver starting, but as I've thought it over you definitely want your best players on the field and Walter and Sayers could be used as flankers as he said.

    I like his bravado...

If an alignment of three running backs and three middle linebackers is anachronistic, a copout to a tough selection process, the Tribune will take Walter Payton, Gale Sayers and Bronko Nagurski in a full-house backfield and Bill George, Dick Butkus and Mike Singletary starring from left, middle and right linebacker and play any team, anyplace, anytime.

I would say Devin Hester is by far the best CB the bears have ever drafted.

I often wonder how he would have panned out with his speed.

I still think he could be usable in long dime situations running back a pick or having one lateraled to him. Think he would be a average corner.

Mike Richardson was also very good. Don't remember him getting burned very often at all.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

If Richardson would have played for any other team he'd have been barely adequate. That monster pass rush saved his ass numerous times. Frazier was the guy in that defensive backfield that I think would have been a canidate for best ever had he not destroyed an knee fielding a punt. Ditka was an idiot to play him as a PR in that game.

I'd probably put Fraizer and Woolford at the top of the list followed by Tillman and McCrae. Ellis had a good year or two but he doesn't really standout that much to me. Not having ever seen Grange or McAfee play and since grandpa is too dead to tell me about them I really can't comment except to shake my head an agree with the masses.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.
