Urlacher says Bears must re-sign Kreutz, Adams
Club will look at own free agents first Brad Biggs
When the lockout is resolved and free agent finally hits, the first order of business for most clubs will be re-signing their own free agents.
General managers always tell you free agency starts from within as you try to prevent your own players from leaving. The Chicago Bears aren’t alone in this club, and while the defending NFC North champions don’t have an abundance of unrestricted free agents to consider, there are some key ones.
Brian Urlacher, the team’s middle linebacker, selected two when he visited with SiriusXM NFL Radio hosts Jim Miller and Ross Tucker.
“The two guys I think we gotta get – and I’m hoping I’m not leaving anybody out because we have a few free agents – but Anthony Adams and Olin Kreutz,” Urlacher said. “Olin’s the leader of our locker room, the leader of our offensive line. He takes all the heat, man, when things go bad up front everyone points the finger at him which is not fair. And he takes the heat, he doesn’t hang guys out to dry, he takes the heat.
"Double A, Anthony Adams, is a great player. He’s always in his gap, he’s always up the field making plays, and he’s a great teammate. People don’t realize, man, you get these guys who, sometimes they’re turds and they’re good players and so they’re hard to deal with. He’s not. He’s a fun guy to be around. He’s a great player.”
The club made an effort to re-sign Adams late last season but didn’t present an offer he believed to be worth accepting. Now, the Bears will have to up the offer or be prepared to get second-round draft pick Stephen Paea ready in a hurry.
When it comes to Kreutz, it’s expected he will be re-signed. He holds leverage when you consider there isn’t another center on the roster for offensive line coach Mike Tice to consider.

think BOTh kreutz and adams will be back along with roach.. and very likely Pisa also.. graham and manning the 2 longer shots to come back, esp based on the what looks like the new rules

If his word is worth anything on resigning them, surely it'd be the same on getting Burress

Olin really has nowhere else to go at this point in his career and furthermore he deserves to retire as a Chicago Bear. With his toughness he's almost a throwback to an 80's Bears lineman. Adams may have other suitors because he still has some years left but he seems to want to stay in Chicago and I think the Bears want him to stay so I'll assume they'll get a deal done once FA starts. I don't want to see them have to play Paea at NT rather than UT.

Olin took less to sign with bears over the miami offer back in 2004 when in prime.. And both sides have always ahd a mutual respect for each other( which unfort gets rarer and rarer in the league all the time), so can't imagine a contract an issue for either side. And On adams, everything he talks about says wants to be back and JUST IMO, think if didn't have the lockout he would ahve signed before F/A anyway, they were probably real close, so again no issue. And you need him for at least depth if not starting, nd if had to replace would cost you more anyway..

Kreutz is a must sign. Adams is a highly probable signing although "Moon" Mullin still is saying his sources are telling him the Bears are going to make a serious play for Jenkins when FA opens and may even go after Seattle's Mebane if they can't land Jenkins. You just don't know with the Bears now what they are going to do in FA as the last two years in a row were way out of character of what we have been used to under Jerry Angelo. I mean the Cutler deal and getting Peppers was beyond anything I ever envisioned happening so I'm not going to rule out another pleasant surprise this year either.

Interesting point on the Bears unpredictability but then Mullins has been writing all kinds of speculative articles for a couple of months now. I could see Jenkins as a pass rush specialist but not with the price tag he's likely to be looking for. If he came at a fair cost he may be that perfect spot pass rusher to fill in either at DE or DT. Can't say that the idea doesn't intrigue me as far as getting one of the best pass rushers in the division away from Green Bay.
Mebane may be younger but I'd rather have AA's consitency and leadership. He knows this defense inside and out and as Urlacher points out. He's never out of position. It's a gap oriented system and if they play it well the Bears are tough to run on. It's when they don't that teams pile up the yardage on them. From my standpoint I wouldn't think Mebane would play it as well.
Somewhere along the line I think they'll surprise us but I'm just not sure it will be defensively.

I can see Mebane as a NT and he was talked about before the draft but I can't understand how he equates going after Cullen Jenkins who's more a UT or DE with replacing Adams who's most definitely a NT. Jenkins may be a very good 3rd down pass rush replacement for AA and maybe even give us some flexibility as a DE whenever Pep or Izzy need a breather but I just don't see him as an every down NT. There's also his injury history to think about if you plan on making him a full time guy. I don't see the fit myself if it's AA he replaces.
This was also written before we drafted Paea as well. Things may have changed because of that alone.
