CB Antonio Cromartie and the Bears
The new York Jets made a big splash in free agency last year by pairing Antonio Cromartie with Darrelle Revis to form what was considered the best CB tandem in the league. Cromartie has been average at best, often being picked on as Revis shut down the opposite receiver. The New York Jets are not expected to be able to afford Cromartie as they have a slew of young CBs in their system ready to take over at a cheaper price.
Cromartie will be one of the premier CBs in free agency and many teams will come calling. He's rumored to prefer teams in his native Florida, but will definitely follow the money.
Enter the Chicago Bears.
Charles Tillman is signed through 2013, and is a steady player who has a knack for causing fumbles and making big plays. He has stayed relatively injury-free, but will need to maintain consistency as the bears' backfield is very young and inexperienced.
Undersized Tim Jennings is a free agent, but unfortunately the team is expected to resign him. He is shorter (5'9) than most receivers he covers, and would be an ideal third corner and nickle back if the Bears could sign a No. 1 or No. 2 corner to pair with Tillman.
Zackary Bowman was announced as a starter last year, got burned on a few plays, and never saw the field again. He is a free agent and not expected to be signed.
The Bears play in a conference with two dome teams and Aaron Rodgers. They need to have enough weapons on defense to be able to match up against the best receivers in the league. Lovie Smith's system requires defensive backs to be intelligent and cover areas rather than players when in the cover-2 scheme.
Cromartie has proven to be a player that excels in space, rather than assigned to cover specific receivers. His aggressive style and physical nature would be a welcome upgrade to a Bears defense that is solid, but aging.
Would you guys like to see him in Bears uniform?

I am under the impression that Cromartie is a terrible zone defender and a bit of a head case.
He does not fit what we want to do and I do not think he is worth the money that he is going to want.

I was under the assumption that man to man was his problem...

Can he play on the left side? That's where we need the help since we won't be replacing Peanut just yet. We'd also have to look at the cost. Will the Jets cut him or are they trying to trade him? To me there's a lot of questions involved with this.

If the next evolution in Rod's defense is to play more man to man and do it competitively then we should consider it. How much cheaper than Asomugha will or would he be?
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

Where did anyone say that the Bears will play more man to man? As long as Lovie is the coach I don't see that happening. I think he should have the corners press more but unless he changes his entire defensive philosophy they won't be playing much man coverage. Lovie's entire defensive system is based on creating turnovers and to do that you have to be playing with the man and ball in front of you and not running with your man and your back to the QB.

5. New York Jets: Rex Ryan and the Jets have a lot of work to do. They want to bring back cornerback Antonio Cromartie, wide receivers Santonio Holmes, Brad Smith and Braylon Edwards and some key role players. To do that, they will have to clear out some cap room. The Jets are $1.3 million over the salary cap and have the league's highest payroll at $123.85 million. General manager Mike Tannenbaum has always worked the cap like a puzzle. He would be especially challenged by a $120 million cap.

Between this and another good draft we may see a lot of change in our roster over the next couple of years.
