Bears’ Anthony Adams wants to stay

Bears’ Anthony Adams wants to stay, but he’ll have options

    By Sean Jensen sjensen@suntimes.com

    Updated: July 6, 2011 2:12AM

Three months ago, Anthony Adams expressed frustration with his uncertain future.
Adams, an unrestricted free agent, wanted to know his NFL home for 2011, and he hoped he wouldn’t have to relocate his family.
His mind-set hasn’t changed much since.
“I love it here, man. Hopefully I am back here,” Adams said Tuesday. “But we just have to see what happens. Maybe they’re thinking something else. I don’t know. You never *really do know, and I don’t want to be naďve.”
An NFC personnel executive said he expected *Adams to draw *interest from several teams because of his consistency and willingness to play nose tackle, an unglamorous position.
Clubs are paying a premium for defensive tackles, and there will be a massive market for them when free agency begins. Adams might not be as well known as Aubrayo Franklin, Kris Jenkins or former Bears teammate Tommie Harris. But he has been durable and productive the last two seasons, playing in all 32 games and recording four sacks and two forced fumbles.
Earlier this offseason, Pro Bowl linebackers Lance Briggs and *Brian *Urlacher lobbied for *Adams’ return.
“Double A is huge for us,” Urlacher said. “He’s the guy who is there on time, practices every day and makes work fun for us.”
Asked about Urlacher’s praise, Adams said, “He’s the leader of the team, so just to hear that from him and Lance means a lot.
“We had something good going, so there’s no sense in breaking that up because we all know how hard it is to get to the *Super Bowl.”
This offseason is completely out of whack *because of the lockout. But Adams has been plenty busy, staying in shape, working toward a master’s degree and awaiting the *arrival of his third child.
“I try to make it as normal as *possible,” Adams said. “Right now, it’s kind of like crunch time. I think something needs to be done if they want to have a season.”
But Adams isn’t constantly contacting *Robbie Gould, the Bears’ NFL Players *Association representative, or anyone else for updates on the *labor *negotiations.
“I don’t think there’s *really anything they can tell me. It’s basically speculation,” Adams said. “So *unless they tell me, ‘Let’s get back to work,’ I don’t want to hear anything.”
For his part, Adams weighs 310 pounds, which, he said, is his ideal playing weight.
More immediately, though, Adams is anxious about something else.
“My baby is due any day,” he said, “and I got a lot of stuff going on.”

There are far more reasons for AA to remain a Bear than for him to depart IMO. We don't have all that much quality depth in the Dline that we can afford to lose him so I can see them getting a deal done as soon as this labor crap is over. The Bears defense needs a consistent NT who knows how to play his gap and stay put so that the UT can penetrate and make plays in the backfield. Considering the fact that we'll be going into this year with two inexperienced UT's (Melton & Paea) having a guy like AA next to them will help considerably.

Platooning Toe and Adams is going to be essential to keeping the line fresh and rested. I think re-signing him will be the frist piece of business-whenever that is.

New baby on the way, working on his masters and he loves being in Chicago. He's got a lot on his plate right now and every reason in the world to re-sign once it can be done. He's one guy I have very little worry about.

It will be interesting to see what does happen with that NT spot this year. Logically "Toe" would move over from the UT spot he played last year and rotate with AA but there's also Tank Tyler in the mix as well. Tyler is another one of those guys like Paea who wowed them at the combine with his strength and maybe more suited for NT than Toeaina. To me "Toe" still seems more like the penetrating type of DT than he does a space holder in the fashion of a NT.

I'd like to see a guy like Tyler in the mix so that maybe we can cut ties with Marcus Harrison. I don't know what it is with that guy. He walked into a near perfect situation when the Bears drafted him and all he had to do was show some consistency and pass rush ability and he had a starters job. Instead he turned out fat and lazy and proved why he slipped out of the first round the year he was picked.

I think the writing is on the wall w/Harrison esp with a much shorter camp. Barring a miracle he is gone. Toe is more penetrating but perhaps that is a good change of pace and get some sacks and pressure out of the nose position. If Tyler comes around that would be a nice luxury. One thing is looking more certain-that the run defense has a chance to be even more stout than last season.

Is Jenkins a bigger upgrade than Adams or just cheaper?

I doubt that Jenkins would be cheaper. Actually I think he'd be looking for far more because of his pass rush abilties. Even if we do sign Jenkins (which I doubt) we'd still need AA. Jenkins isn't a NT so unless they plan to put Paea at NT we wouldn't have another true NT on the roster. Signing Mebane instead of AA would make more sense.

Jenkins would be a replacement for Harris imo. Allot of scenarios play out with this. Jenkins and Toe start together cause Toe a better NT anyways with Paea playing the Tank role and Melton being that jack of all trades. Or Jenkins and Paea start together with Toe and Melton the relief guys. Without trainging camp and just speculation hard to really tell

idk I think Toe in his rookie year when we had all our injuries looked pretty good as a NT
