Hester Touts Santana Moss to the Bears.......

Chicago needs a No. 1 option Brad Biggs

Nothing would make Chicago Bears fans more happy once the new league year begins than the addition of a big-name wide receiver.

It’s been an overlooked position and the team has consistently competed with a cast of No. 3 receivers. Some big names are set to be on the open market and Devin Hester has his eyes set on one of them. He’d like to see the club go out and sign Santana Moss, who has already stated his preference is to return to the Washington Redskins.

Moss would likely be a good fit for Mike Martz’s offensive scheme. Martz likes quick receivers who can get in and out of their breaks with precision. "Anybody that can come in and help out the team, I’m down for it, and a guy like (Moss) can come in and really help out a lot," Hester said, according to Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune. "I’m hoping we can get him.

"If we don’t add anybody, I’m very comfortable with the guys we have now, to be honest with you. Everybody showed glimpses last season. We have the athletes to do it. Now, it’s just about going out there and getting it done."

Moss is 32, about the same age Muhsin Muhammad was when they signed him to be a No. 1 receiver. Muhammad was adequate. Moss is 5-10 and as the report indicates the Bears already have a collection of smaller receivers.

“That small stuff is overrated," coach Lovie Smith said earlier this offseason. "You look for receivers who can catch the ball and move the chains."

Please God no. Get someone who still has some upside to his game and not someone who is on the downside of 30. We need someone who will be around for a few years, not someone who might give us about 2-3 years before he decides to hang up his cleats.

Funny, his name keeps popping up though. First with Hester and then even Lovie poo poo's the idea that a bigger WR is better for our offense. Just about anybody we'd be looking at this year except for Rice is on the far side of 30 so I'm not too worried about age as long as they're productive and not in decline. Moss fits that description whereas Steve Smith does not and they're both smaller quicker guys who fit the Martz profile.

I disagree that we need somebody who'll be productive for more than another two or three years. If we're ever gonna get a true #1 guy we'll need to draft him and develop him ourselves. Guys like that just aren't anywhere to be found when they're in their prime. If you're looking to FA to get one either he's gonna have issues or he'll be so ungodly expensive that he'll be virtually untouchable. The Bears will never overpay for a WR IMO. If Moss or anyone else can give us even two good years we have the time to see what we have in Knox and Bennett plus draft a WR early in 2012 or 2013.

We all seem to agree that we need somebody. The only question is who and for some reason Moss' name keeps surfacing. Maybe there's something to it and maybe not. We shouldn't have long to wait to find out now.

Sure Cutler would appreciate another < 6'er to throw to. Moss is not a #1.

Glad you commented Kegger. You've probably seen him play more than most of us. I'd have to agree that size wise he's even shorter 5'10" than our other guys but then again those are the types that Martz favors. You're saying he's not a #1 guy but he hauled in 93 passes last year so he had to be the "Skins" top target didn't he? Is he much of a deep threat or at this stage of his career is he just a slot guy who couldn't win a starting spot amongst Hester, Knox, and Bennett?

I appreciate your input because for some reason his name keeps popping up and if Martz wants him they may go after him.

Mike Martz should be fired anyway for being an idiot. If he demands that Jerry Angelo go after Grandpa Moss to be his number one WR, then I will have a serious shit hemorrhage.

Edit: Martz needs to be tailoring his wide receivers based on Cutler's needs, not by what he wants. If Cutler wants a tall wide receiver, then by all means, go get him one.

Moss wants to stay in Washington, so I would say that he will make it easier on the 'Skins to retain him. Today, I heard on NFL Network where Plaxico Burress is interested in playing with the Bears. I'm not so sure I like that idea either given that he's actually older than Moss and he hasn't played in two years.

Whether or not Moss remains in Washington may be contingent on them going after and signing Santonio Holmes. Right now it's been written that Holmes prefers to stay with the Jets and Moss with the Redskins but once the offers begin to fly all of that could change. It also seems that Plax is far more interested in the Bears than the Bears are in him. Philly seems to have the most interest and that's where I think he'll end up.

Rice is a guy we need to get serious about and right away. He'll attract a lot of interest despite last years injury because of his age and his upside. He should be aware that the Vikes will be going through some growing pains and that having Ponder throwing to him is not gonna be like having Favre. This where having a QB like Cutler and an OC like Martz may payoff in the competition for his services. He's got the potential to be an all-pro on the right team or may be no more than a journeyman on the wrong team. For him this is where you have a career decision to make and I think we'll be in the hunt.
