Plax or Moss, Who's the Better Choice?.......

Some diverse opinions from several writers but the only one who gets to the really important issue is Adam Rank who thinks we need to protect Jay Cutler better before getting him someone else to throw to.

I can't say I disagree and that an OG like Dahl, Joseph, or Yanda should be first on our shopping list once FA begins but another WR can't be all that far behind. We do need a vet badly so this is what these six guys have to say about it.

There really is no consensus among them and two even depart from the choices given. So it's two for Moss based on his fit in a Martz offense; two for Plax based on what the Bears don't have, size; One for Holmes because he's better than either Plax or Moss but admittedly will be more difficult to sign. Did Steve Wyche who says Holmes forget that the Redskins want him too? Nobody outbids Dan Snyder when he wants a player.

And finally comes Pat Kirwan with the best choice yet, go for size but also go for youth and potential and get Sidney Rice. To me that's the best choice we could make. Drop the
satchel and go for him fast and hard like we did with Peppers. This is the one guy who won't require us to be in this pickle again in another two years.

Interesting thoughts on the subject anyway.

Better catch: Would Burress or Moss be a better fit in Chicago?

US Presswire Plaxico Burress (left) and Santana Moss each bring distinct skills to the field. Who would help the Bears more?

Devin Hester said Tuesday that he wants Santana Moss to join him in the Bears' receiving corps. Plaxico Burress said Chicago is in his top three destinations as he attempts an NFL comeback after nearly two years in prison.

But which wide receiver -- Moss or Burress -- would be a better fit for coordinator Mike Martz's offense?

    • Jason La CanforaNFL Network
    • Burress could give Bears diversity on offense

Moss is a very smart, versatile receiver who can move to multiple spots within an offense. His background in Joe Gibbs' offense also makes him a natural with Martz and the Bears (Martz and Gibbs both trace back to the legendary Don Coryell).

But that doesn't necessarily mean Moss is a better fit than Burress.

Moss would be redundant in Chicago -- the Bears have plenty of smallish, versatile guys, with Hester among them. They need what quarterback Jay Cutler has been longing for since his Denver days with Brandon Marshall -- a big-target receiver with whom he can play catch. It has been sorely lacking in Chicago, and the Bears know it, which is why people on Martz's staff -- if they can't land a younger, top-of-the-market guy such as Santonio Holmes or Sidney Rice -- would be more than prepared to make due with Burress.

Burress is no dummy and could learn the offense. He's great in tight quarters and even in limited packages could make an impact on third down and in the red zone. He's exactly what the Bears are missing and a contrast to what the rest of their receiving corps looks like. Sometimes it's more about diversity of personnel than it is about knowledge of the system.

Burress could end up in the Midwest, either with the Bears or Rams, and he stands to be a relative bargain regardless, given his off-the-field issues and time away from the game.

    • Elliot HarrisonNFL.com
    • Burress would add what Bears don't have

Moss might be a better fit for Martz's offense, but the Bears don't need another average-size, quick receiver like Hester and Johnny Knox. A big target like Burress, who has proven he can make plays downfield by using his body and meeting the ball at its highest point, is precisely what Chicago doesn't have.

If I worked in the Bears' front office, I'd be pushing for Burress.

    • Steve WycheNFL.com
    • Forget these two; Holmes would solve Bears' receiver riddle

Neither is an ideal fit, but of the two, Moss probably would be better. He's more of a disciplined route runner and gets open more than Burress, who catches a lot of passes while being closely guarded.

Moss could work nicely in the Bears' offense, but the team might need more of a physical wide receiver who not only can make plays in the passing game but help in the run game, either through blocking or being enough of a threat that defenses have to back off the line of scrimmage. Chicago also could use a bigger receiver who can wrestle balls through tight windows and make plays on the sideline and in the end zone in traffic -- like Burress. Too often, Chicago’s receivers wait for the ball to get to them instead of snatching it when it's a contested throw.

Burress, though, might not deliver the multi-faceted impact the Bears need to really open up the passing game.

Santonio Holmes, whom the Jets probably will try hard to re-sign, is the shifty, fast, versatile type of receiver who could excel in that offense -- like Torry Holt did for Martz in St. Louis. Holmes also has made countless clutch plays, which is what the Bears need to reach the next level.

    • Pat Kirwan NFL.com
    • Size makes most sense for Bears

Either one would help the Bears. Moss caught 93 passes last year and is a solid guy in the locker room. Even though Burress hasn't played since 2008, he is the big receiver they need. Considering that the Bears already have smaller receivers in Johnny Knox, Devin Hester and Earl Bennett, I might take a chance on Burress. However, the contract has to be favorable for the club.

Jay Cutler only threw 23 touchdown passes last year and a big guy like Burress, especially in the red zone, could help push that total to 30 in 2011. Still, there might be a better fit out there for the Bears. My first choice for Chicago would be Sidney Rice. Rice weakens a division opponent, is much younger than either Burress or Moss, and his 2009 performance is just a glimpse of what might be ahead.

    • Adam Rank NFL.com
    • Moss is the clear choice

So the question comes down to would you rather have a guy who nearly had 100 receptions last season or the guy who spent most of the past two years in jail? This is not a contest. The Bears should leave the brooding, enigmatic receivers for the Bengals and take the best guy for their system.

Moss would be the best choice for the Bears. His size and speed make him the perfect receiver in Martz's system, harking back to Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt and Az-Zahir Hakim with the Rams. If the Bears are looking for a big receiver, they should take a look at Sidney Rice.

The more important cog to this equation, though, is probably an offensive line to help keep Jay Cutler upright.

I think we'd probably all agree that Rice would be the one we'd take in a heartbeat but if it just can't be done who's the best choice. Plax, Moss or even Malcolm Floyd in place of Plax. Similar size and age but without the baggage. What do you guys think?

The thought of having Rice gives me a chub.

Wait...that didn't sound right... what I meant to say was that the thought of having Rice on the Bears gives me a chub.

But if I couldn't have Rice, I think that with the size we need, I would go with Malcom Floyd. At 6'5", he could still be a stud WR with his YAC stats, and he could be a lot like Plaxico Burress in that regard with, again, minus the baggage.

Rice and Moss have alwasy been at the top of the list for most of us but I'm starting to get intrigued about the idea of Santana Moss too. I think the Bears have their eyes on Rice in a big way which is why we haven't heard a word about it. I think they'll take a big time jump at him quickly but I don't think the fallback will be Floyd. I think it very well could be Moss.

Here's a guy who's ideal for Martz's offense and caught 93 passes a year ago. He's no spring chicken but so far he shows no signs of slowing down and if he gives us two good years while we draft and develop another WR he'll be a bargain for what he'll cost us. Obviously I prefer Rice because of his age and his upside but if we have to settle for a guy we know can beat one on one coverage then Moss isn't a bad choice.

The best choice would be a WR with both size and speed. But if a choice between one or the other is all that is available, I'm going with size. It comes down to the O-line. If the Bears improve the O-line in FA, and the line doesn't get out-talented in pass protection, and no one on the line gets hurt, and the O-line doesn't get out-schemed, (the reader should be noticing a lot of "if/and" coming off this sentence) then there should be no problems. Assuming no O-line problems, the best route runner is the way to go. On the other hand, if you think there will be times that the O-line will get beat, then the need for... lets call it Improvisational Offense, has to be considered. In this situation, the big, go-to receiver is the way to go. (Didn't someone say "You can't train size."?) I think this is where the different opinions in the Burress (or, if you are Dags, Floyd) vs. Moss debate come from. In a game where the other guys are actively opposing your efforts, it's not a question of if, but when and how often (hopefully rarely) our O-line will get beat. Make no mistake, Rice would be my first choice, but in a Moss vs. Burress (Floyd) debate, I'm going for the big go-to guy for when things go wrong. Because if everything goes right, then our superbowl victory is already assured...

Yeah, if the criteria is size and speed you have to go with Rice. He may not be as nifty a route runner as others but he gives you another downfield threat and height in the red zone. The other factor, as I've mentioned before, is that his age is perfect and he's right at the point that many WR's mature into all-pro players. This is a guy who could be a 1200 yd plus a year guy for years and he eliminates the need to use a high 2012 or 2013 draft pick on a WR. Rice is the 2011 FA move that is the equivalent of Peppers in 2010, costly but worth ever red cent.

Where we differ Xaos is what they may do if we can't sign Rice or have already decided that he's out of our league $$$ wise. Personally I think they'll pass on Plax Burress and look harder at Moss or even Holmes. If the Redskins get into the bidding over Holmes he's as good as their's. Snyder has deeper pockets than most anyone and he's always been willing to spend. If they do sign Holmes then Moss becomes expendable and since Martz has dropped all kinds of hints about size not being the deciding factor I think he'll prefer Moss' ability to separate from coverage over Burress' physical size. Just a guess but it fits since he's a far better route runner than Plax and that's what Martz wants.

I like Moss too, but as you said, the only thing that might detract me from him a little would be his age. He's fast, and he has one member of the current Bears WR corp who wants him on the team in the worst way (Hester). Truthfully, the more I look at it, the more that I think that he could be the jolt of veteran leadership that the WRs need, since the longest that any of them have played for them has been five seasons.
