Martz, Why Big WR's Don't Matter To Him......

Bears coordinator doesn't see it as pressing need Brad Biggs

For the longest time, Chicago Bears fans have longed for that big wide receiver who can stretch the field vertically and still go over the middle and make the tough receptions.
The Bears’ history at the position has been about as barren as it’s been at quarterback. Consider that since 1972, the team’s only Pro Bowl wide receiver was Marty Booker in 2002. That’s some kind of drought.

Those still seeking the big wide receiver are going to be disappointed in the latest explanation from offensive coordinator Mike Martz, who has a collection of 6-foot and under targets right now. When Martz directed the Greatest Show on Turf in St. Louis, he did it with smaller receivers and the only big receiver that really jumps out who played for Martz during the last 11 years was Calvin Johnson in Detroit. Johnson was obviously drafted by ex-general manager Matt Millen.

Size doesn't make any difference," Martz told the Associated Press. "It makes absolutely no difference. With Matt (Forte) as a runner and our ability to run the ball, we get a lot of one-on-one coverage, and you have to have receivers that can beat corners one on one. And generally, the guys that can change direction and run fast -- those are the kinds of guys that you're looking for. If he's a big guy that can do all that, that's a rare find. A lot of times, those guys are more 5-10 guys.”

While that doesn’t rule out the Bears from pursuing Sidney Rice, Malcom Floyd or Plaxico Burress, Martz isn’t banging he drum for a big target. He’s banged the drum before, too, if you recall him pining for a veteran backup quarterback last summer.

In a perfect world and in a dome that does make sense. We don't have the offensive capability nor the line. It would be nice to get Jay a bigger target as running for his life he may enjoy and cut down the ints w/a bigger guy he can throw it up top to. Plus it may well serve as a safety valve as the TE's are thrown to a bit less in this system.

This is somewhat of a repeat from another thread but worth another review as we approach free agency.

I thought that one of the comments made about this on the NFP site was very astute. Has Martz considered that the footing in Soldier Field is nowhere near what he's had in St. Louis or Detroit? How much affect will that have on the speed and cutting ability of the smaller WR's he seem to favor. We've talked about Johnny Knox's issues with his route running but have we ever thought about how much of that might have been attributable to poor field conditions and bad footing?

It's high time Mike Martz forgets about what he's been able to accomplish elsewhere when playing on turf and realize that he's now coaching an offense that plays 8 of it's games in Soldier Field which even early in the season is far from being one of the better playing surfaces in the NFL. This arrogance and desire to relive past glories rather than adapting to today's needs is costing us!

Cannot adapt?... care to explain. I call the Dallas game last year as my first witness says different.

One more writer who thinks that despite the more obvious need for size at WR that may not be the way Martz prefers to go. My greatest concern is still what I posted earlier. Can these smaller, quicker WR's actually play to their strengths on that shitty ass field? Before trying to reconstruct "The Greatest Show on Turf" maybe Martz needs to think about creating a new "Greatest Show on Loose Sod".

Santana Moss: Redundant for the Bears?

    By Kevin Seifert

This week, Chicago Bears receiver/kick returner Devin Hester advocated the pursuit of receiver Santana Moss, a fellow former University of Miami player who will be a free agent when the NFL completes negotiations on its new collective bargaining agreement.

    Moss
Wednesday, Bears safety Chris Harris jumped aboard the idea as well.

    Does it make sense?

On one hand, no. Adding Moss would give the Bears a fourth receiver who measured less than 6-feet tall at their respective scouting combines. Moss was 5-9 1/2 at the time, and as we noted this spring, here are the combine measurements for the Bears' current top receivers:

On the other hand, Moss set a career high last season with 93 receptions for the Washington Redskins and believes he has a number of productive seasons left. Smaller receivers have a long history of success in offensive coordinator Mike Martz's scheme, and the Bears can always rely on tight end Greg Olsen for routes that capitalize on height.

This topic has been bouncing around for years. The Bears still seem scarred by the free agent acquisition of Muhsin Muhammad, which among other things convinced them not to re-sign free agent Bernard Berrian. I really can't tell you how aggressive the Bears will be, if at all, in adding a veteran receiver later this summer.

It would make sense for the Bears to pursue a player who brings a different skill set than their existing players. But Martz has a time-tested route tree that might be better suited for a player of Moss' skills. How's that for fence-sitting?

I didn't see it so I can't comment Grizz. What did Martz do to convince you that he will adapt?

Sure. Dallas game was one but don't you think that tactical victory got overshadowed by having a "talk to" about being more balanced? Did the absolute fail that was Collins at qb been forgotten? Do you believe Martz is correct about not having a bigger WR?

Go back and watch it... you'll see.
our O-line was getting destroyed all day and martz went to quick passes and hot reads and I think Olsen ended up torching the D on a 50+ yard TD score that set the pace for us to win the game, and all anyone wanted to talk about after was how well we adjusted and what a relief it was to get away from Ron "bang your head against the wall and run another bubble screen" turner.....

I think that was a good adaptation. However I think something like that should be an EXPECTED adaptation. I think we were just so used to a subpar Turner that any kind of change looks a bit better than perhaps it should.
