Hope to god they keep him under wraps like last year and we are a again a close to 50/50 run/pass team. I'd much rather have our young OL moving forward then backward

But he did start using the TE more later in the season. Both Olsen and Davis had big plays during the playoffs. Olsen had 41 catches, only 10 less than Knox and Forte, and 5 td's which tied him with Knox for the team lead. I agree that they should be throwing to him more but it's not like he never used him at all. Martz did admit that he overlooked both Olsen and Bennett somewhat last year and said he's correct that this year so we'll see how it break out.

Martz alone can't fix this offense unless our GM starts drafting for the offense. JA has no problem cutting defensive players and using draft picks to replace those players, Alex Brown, Tommie Harris yet he still neglects the offense. Get some legit offensive players on this team.
This years FA is where he can make up for not drafting enough impact players on offense. The Oline problem diminishes with the drafting of Carimi but I think the real difference may come from whoever we sign to play OG. That's still a weakpoint. I'm hoping they can get Harvey Dahl and put him next to Webb or Carimi on the right side. That would be one hell of a duo for Forte to run behind.

What I'm more concerned about is their apparent lack of concern over the WR situation. It may be just a feint but neither Lovie or Martz seems to think we're all that short on talent. Bullshit! Nobody is ever scared of what we can do to them through the air despite having Cutler at QB. Our passing game needs a major league boost that can only come by adding some talent. Who, not if, should be the only question.

Soul, until I see it, I'm not buying it. Fact is, he might have gotten Olsen closer then where he was during the 1st half, but he let Dez Clark sit out while Manu the other OL/turnstyle, sat in there and stunk it up. Olsen still had almost 20 less receptions less yards and less TD's then under RT the year before.
It is not in Martz's set up to use the TE, even more so then to run the ball. Vernon Davis suffered under the Martz system, but looked really good before and after.

This team, ecspecially under JA is real bad about over valuing our own talent. Our WR's don't scare anyone, and they are easily bumped out of the routes they are to be running. Bennet is a possesion guy, and is fine at it, Hester is only good when in space, and Knox is a deep threat; if he's not touched. We need a legit wr that teams will look at and say 2 guys on him/rotate the D to where he is to allow Knox to use his spead to beat 1 guy, or hester to use that uncanny open field talent of his on the lb's.

If it's not just a smokescreen the Bears seeming lack of interest in upgrading at WR is very puzzling unless Martz truly does mean what he's said about making Olsen a bigger part of the passing offense this year. I know that it's not been his habit to focus on TE's in the past but unless he gets a bigger WR Olsen is all he's got in the way of size to offer to Cutler. We'll know how serious he is about it if he moves him out of that blocking back slot he had him in last year. You can't be a pass catching threat from there.

If we don't get anyone it's gonna be Knox and Bennett starting on the outside and with any luck he'll be smart enough to move Hester into the slot where the mismatches should drive other crazy. That alone will force teams to move people out of the box to cover him.

Never count on Martz to do anything smart, soulman. Because of him, we drafted a quarterback in the fifth round and, before that, signed Todd Collins to play the position for us, if playing is what you call it. Now, we're going to have to deal with signing a sub-par WR for what Cutler needs unless Pinky (Jerry Angelo) ignores the Brain's (Martz) scheme. Martz needs to be fired.

You can count on Martz to do what suits his needs in his offense. The problem is we don't know exactly what that offense will look like this year. He claims to have learned and adjusted last year and will continue along those lines but his pedigree says otherwise. The Collins signing wasn't exactly a mistake at the time since Haine was injured but once Collins proved that he couldn't play any longer we should have cut him loose. Not kept him at the #2 spot. That's on Martz IMO.

I wouldn't call Santana Moss a sub-par WR. He's still a very effective player and he would definitely upgrade the WR core but that still leaves us in the position of not having anyone with size at WR unless we do use Olsen more in that capacity. I want to see us take a serious run at Rice but if it boils down to a guy like Moss at least we'll have made a move to improve our passing game. He may not be the bigger guy we all want but then New England seems to do just fine with a bunch of smaller WR's and so does Indy.

I would pee in my pants if Calvin Johnson ever came open in free agency.

Seriously, does anyone know when Calvin Johnson will come open in free agency? I bet even Martz the Fartz wouldn't mind having him since he had him in Detroit and had success running the offense with him in it.

Johnson is entering his 5th year but I don't know his contract status. He was the second overall pick in 2007 so I'm guessing he got a 5 or 6 year deal. I don't think that it makes much difference though Dags. Detroit will franchise him in a heartbeat if they can't sign him to an extension when his rookie deal is up. Unless he gets injured and his production falls way off I don't think he'll see FA any time soon.
