Thread: Franchised Players 2011 and Franchise Costs..

Now that FA appears imminent I thought it would be good to post the names of those players who have been franchised by their teams, whether or not they are Exclusive or Non-Exclusive, and the difference between the two. I've also listed the pay scale for Non-Exclusive Franchise Players which gives an idea of what the top five players at that position were averaging in 2010. If nothing else this gives us an idea of what the best of the best can command by way of a contract.

So for an example; if the Bears wanted to approach Logan Mankins and offer him a deal we're looking at something that would probably average $10 mil per year over 5 years with as much as 50% to 60% guaranteed. So in addition to that $50 mil contract we'd also have to give the Pats two 1st round picks if they chose not to match. I like Logan Mankins but I wouldn't make that deal under any circumstances.

You may not have to worry about making such a deal to Logan Mankins while he is currently Franchise tagged. I heard something on the tube yesterday that said that he and Vincent Jackson may hold up the lifting of the Brady v. NFL, et. al., case until they get their Franchise tag lifted.

Correct me if I'm wrong on that, but can they do that? And if Logan Mankins' franchise tag is lifted, do you think the Bears will go after him immediately?

If the NFL will pay them $10 mil to drop out of the lawsuit and accept the franchise tag for 2011 I don't know why they'd even want to become UFA's. Under those circumstances Mankins stands to make $20.7 mil guaranteed and Jackson $19.5 mil just by staying put for one more year. They can't be franchised again next year so they wait one more year for FA. Big deal.

Would the Bears go after Mankins if he wasn't franchised? I think not. You're looking at a guy who's gonna want a 5-6 year deal that will pay him $50-$60 mil with 50% to 60% guaranteed. If you compared him with other UFA's like Dahl, Yanda, Joseph, etc. who could be had for less it just doesn't seem like a good deal to me.

I would be interested in Mankins only if the price were reasonable and it would be much the same with Jackson. Actually Jackson would have a far greater impact of the Bears offense than Mankins so I'd sign him to a 5-6 year deal before I'd sign Mankins but that's just me.

If there was no chance of drafting Carimi, which at the time seemed likely, then I would have offered NE our #29 pick for him after we had come to an agreement with Mankins on a contract. I wouldn't have been looking at paying him $10 mil per year though. That was the extent of my "man love" as you put it and that hasn't changed. I'm not paying Mankins what an All-Pro LT makes period.
