I read another article that explains why Smith may be of interest to the Bears. Apparently the 3rd QB for each team will be active for every game so teams will need to give up a game day roster spot for the guy who charts the plays and you hope never sees the field. Since Smith was a college QB and can still throw and probably run a wildcat formation as well he allows the Bears to use that roster spot on someone else and keep Enderle inactive.
He may not be a bad pickup if we also sign another vet WR. He shouldn't be all that costly that we still couldn't sign another guy. Mike Sim-Walker is lobbying the Bears pretty hard to take a look at him and you could probably get both him and Smith for less than Rice or Edwards would cost alone. It's not like we couldn't find a use for both of them.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

They also expanded the game day dressed roster one spot to 46 in order to accommodate that, so it's a moot point.

Thanks sox. It would be nice if whoever wrote the articles that my posts are based on bothered to get the complete story rather than half of it. It makes sense that they would do that.
Tell me, how much differently would you feel about signing Brad Smith if they also signed another vet WR? Smith can't be all that costly and he's got some skills that could make him a decent playmaker. Mike Sim-Walker is lobbying the Bears pretty hard so these two guys might be had for less than one top tier guy like Rice, Edwards, or Holmes.
What are your thoughts on that?

Frankly, I don't see the point. I'd rather go with a completely unknown in Iglesias than sign a guy whose sole value is at KR to create a log jam at a position where we need legit talent.
Just adding this to the thread; The Ravens will be releasing Derrick Mason. He's no youngster but he's remained productive and he fits the description of a Mike Martz WR. Just one more waiver wire addition to the WR list.

exactly there is no u[pside to Smith. What we see is what we get. This would be just another half assed effort in creating legit offense
I cant wait to see the report we are heavily interested in a G that was a bench warmer the past 4 years but we believe could start...........................like the genius move of outbidding ourselves for Omyale
I smell a special teams overhaul in camp Angleo and company.

Like I said elsewhere I'm getting ready to be anywhere from moderately to severely disappointed in our offseason FA moves. I can accept a few nonsensical things but if we fail to address that miserable Oline situation and not sign a top notch OG I'll join you with the JA bashing.

The Bears made it very clear that they don't intend to sign a big WR. Brad Smith is not too old and has the size we want. He can play WR, QB, HB and KR. He would come as a much cheaper alternative than others. So why not? He can't be worse than our receiving corps.

To me he looks more like a Matt Forte clone than anything. He's definitely more of a ultility guy than anything else but he's a playmaker. Truth of the matter is I'd much rather have Smith as a backup to Forte and as a spare WR than I would have Taylor at that spot again. From what I can see the best description I can come up with is useful. He's not an established WR at all but he looks like he could be useful.
