Garza takes over as Bears center

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. (AP)—As negotiations with veteran free agent Olin Kreutz(notes) dragged on, Roberto Garza(notes) was getting ready to take over at center—at least for the next few days.
The Bears certainly were busy leading up to their first practice on Saturday, signing former Pro Bowl receiver Roy Williams and trading away Greg Olsen(notes) in an overhaul at tight end, but one big question mark was hanging over them.

That is the status of Kreutz, the six-time Pro Bowl selection and one of the team’s emotional leaders.
By his own recollection, the last time Garza played in a game at center was in 2005 when he took “like four or five snaps” and repetitions in practice were limited at that position.

This is getting ridiculous. If Garza plays OC we don't get better we get worse and then we have to play somebody who couldn't even beat out Garza at OG. Love the way they're going about working on improving this line. What incredible shit heads.

Look I love Olin but he has not been the player he was for the last two years. With that being said, if this was being done in order to upgrade the position, I would be all for it but it seems to be a length of context issue. There are no other centers out there any better than Kruetz so what is JA going to do? Why doesn't he do something to upgrade this line?

there may not be none better mentally / experienced...but physically capable? I think we can find a replacement.

Hard to replace that knowledge and leadership also. My biggest problem is we never tried to find his replacement, and then balked at paying him....what he wanted, when he offered to take less...WTF!!!

after the Barber signing, I hope JA can trade Taylor + pick for a good OC that replaces Kreutz. Don't want to see Garza as his replacement

    You need Kruetz back.

With a short preseason you need someone who knows the system and can tell everyone else what the hell they are supposed to do.

But here is another reason to bring him back.

I heard Chris Williams was also taking snaps at center! That spells disaster!

LOL, as I said in another post the only Olineman you could get in trade for Ches "the less" ter Taylor would be Frank Omiyale's twin brother. Sorry brother but Taylor is worth zero in trade. No one would even give you a 7th round pick for the guy when they know by your teams actions that he's likely to be cut anyway. If Barber can prove that he's still a tough runner and a short yardage beast like he used to be there's no sense keeping Taylor. Cut your losses and move on.
