BOURBONNAIS – The Chicago Bears have decided not to sign free-agent cornerback Kelvin Hayden at this time, according to multiple sources.
Hayden visited training camp Monday and took a physical; it remains unclear whether he passed the test. Hayden told the Tribune he was fully recovered from the neck injury that placed him on injured reserve in January.
Hayden also left a visit with the Redskins last week without signing.
Hayden could not be reached for comment Tuesday morning. The former Hubbard and Illinois standout expressed a desire to play for his hometown team after being released by the Colts. He also wanted to select a new team by Thursday, with at least one more visit scheduled this week.
The Bears seem content with the cornerback group they have, although Lovie Smith admitted he wanted Hayden two seasons ago before Hayden re-signed with the Colts. The veteran cornerback was the hero of Super Bowl XLI, intercepting a Rex Grossman pass and returning it 56 yards for a score in the Colts’ 29-17 win over the Bears.
Smith said the Bears could keep six cornerbacks on the roster, with Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings as the starters, Zack Bowman battling Jennings for a starting job, and Joshua Moore and Corey Graham also in the mix. D.J. Moore, the nickel back, hopes to get future consideration as a starting corner.
This does not mean the Bears have ruled out Hayden completely. They could wait to see how his situation progresses, provided Hayden does not sign with another team. The Bears are not going to overspend for any free agent still on the market.

The named players make six so if they had signed Hayden or still do at some point in time who gets cut? It seems to me that Bowman is the most vulnerable. If he can't beat Jennings out for LCB this year he may be better off with a team that plays more man coverage.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

That means we have the same CBs as last season? Supa Bo!!!

the worst that could happen is that he can't earn a starting spot... losing J Moore wouldn't be a problem when we add Hayden

We passed on Hayden anyway. They decided not to sign him right now. There may still be some injury issues with him.

This seems to confirm that it was injury concernd and his asking price that caused the Bears to pass. The opinion on Tatupu not being a real good fit for us is something I can also understand. He may not have the speed that Lovie likes in this system and he'd have to make a position change as well. We may be far better off holding a spot open for Pisa if they're relatively certain he'll return by October.

BOURBONNAIS — Coach Lovie Smith says the Bears will continue to look at free agents capable of helping the team. Kelvin Hayden just isn't on the list — for now.
Multiple sources said the Bears decided not to sign the cornerback after Hayden visited training camp and took a physical Monday. Hayden, a former standout at Hubbard and Illinois, told the Tribune he was fully healthy coming off last season's neck injury.
The Bears simply might not want to invest a lot of money in Hayden, particularly if they believe there could be lingering health issues. If Hayden doesn't sign with another team, the Bears might try to land him at a bargain price.
The immediate news should relieve Tim Jennings and Zack Bowman, the two cornerbacks competing for a starting spot alongside Charles Tillman, as well as second-year player Joshua Moore. The Bears could have as many as six corners on the 53-man roster, and they are certain to keep special teams ace Corey Graham in the mix.
Next in line? Free-agent linebacker Lofa Tatupu remains on the open market after being cut by the Seahawks. The Bears placed at least one call about Tatupu, but the team's interest in the three-time Pro Bowler seems lukewarm.
Some inside the organization believe Tatupu's best days are behind him and that he wouldn't fit as a strong-side linebacker because he played in the middle for the Seahawks. But Bears player personnel director Tim Ruskell drafted Tatupu when Ruskell was the Seahawks' general manager.
Again, this could be a case of the Bears not wanting to overpay for a free agent they're not totally sold on. They could wait until October when Pisa Tinoisamoa is scheduled to be recovered fully from major knee surgery.
Extra points: Rookie defensive lineman Stephen Paea is unlikely to return to practice until Thursday as he continues to nurse a sore knee. Paea injured his knee falling on a teammate during practice. … Nose tackle Anthony Adams' calf injury doesn't appear to be serious. … The Bears are 13th in the initial ESPN power rankings, seven spots lower than they were at the end of last season.
