Lets start with the first thing we did:
-Replaced Maynard with Adam Podlesh. This is an upgrade, and while Punters are not the glamor positions of the NFL for any guy not named Vinateiri, this helps our team.
Upgrade should give us solid punting for the next decade
-Replaced Manu with Spaeth. Doesnt matter how much we paid manu, it was an uncapped year, and obviously that experiment didnt work out, so the only people that took a hit were the McCaskey's wallet. Spaeth will either be better, worse, or the same as Manu. I would say he should be better, but lets wait and see. Worst case, we dumped a bad player and tried to address it with another. So ill call this move a push.
Will say upgrade but with reservations
-Olsen. This one shouldnt come as a surprise to anyone. They have been trying to shop him for YEARS now. Honestly, ive always felt Dez Clark was more valuable TE then Olsen, and im more upset that they let Dez disappear on the field. But ill play fair...lets call this one a mistake for now.
No problem with the trade, the guy was soft & got outmuscled by smaller CB's for all his good games he had equally poor games, can't block for shit & kellen davis should be ok
-Roy Williams. Another tricky evaluation. On one hand, he lead the league in drops. On the other...our WR corps isnt that great to begin with. He has had succes in the league under Martz (with the Lions and Kitna no less), so MAYBE Martz knows how to get that out of him again. Maybe he is a bust. But ill go with his recent past and label him "bust until proven otherwise."
The dropaholic, led the league in drops the last 3 years & was awful(statswise) outdoors last season. AWFUL signing
-Sam Hurd. "Another WR from Dallas." Correct, but he is a special teamer, and a pretty decent one from what ive heard. A speciality player picked up for a specific role. Id chalk this up to improving our STs.
straight replacement for Davis Problem with it is I KNEW Rashied could fill in at receiver if needed , not sure Hurd can
-Marion Barber. Ive defended Taylor in the past, noting his poor YPC was probably due to the way he was used (obvious running downs) combined with piss poor blocking from the OL. But if you guys are really that against Taylor, then this should come as an improvement as a relief back for Forte.
Don't like it, from what I've been told, he's done, speed is gone & developed an attitude, maybe he can still pound it short yardage but he doesn't break as many tkls as he did. This years Chester Taylor
-Re-signed Nick Roach. This is another good move, he has been a decent filler at LB, and gives us the depth we need at the position.
Good signing
-DE Vernon Gholston. Now, alot of people are chalking this up to a mistake because his lack of production with the Jets. But you have to remember that in college he was a 4-3 DE, but came to NYJ and was a 3-4 LB, failed, then a 3-4 DE, and failed. So...basically one of two things will happen: either he will continue to be a bust, or playing across from Peppers in a 4-3 system, he will produce on the field. So this move is "wait and see," and we got him on a 1yr contract for this reason. DL is just as important in games as the OL, which brings us to:
Meh, taking a punt but why does itfeel like scraping the barrell?
-Amobi Okoye. Another interesting move. Young, has potential. But the same was said about Tommie Harris. Okoye is being put in position to be on a very good DL, so he may prove to be a valuable pickup, better then Marcus Harrison. Or could be a bust. Point is, hard to say at this point..but lets call that a push for now, since we wont know until we see him in a game.
Who knows
-Kreutz/Spencer. Probably the one that has caused all the rage lately. instead of rehashing every argument, ill just keep it short and say they shouldve re-signed Olin. But in either case, the writing was on the wall...we NEED a new Center to replace him, only difference now is that Olin wont be here this year before we draft his replacement, but in either case he was going to be gone next year.
Should have re-signed Olin, Spencer is not an upgrade & lacks the nastiness ya want on your OL
-the OL. another neglected aspect of this frustrating FA, i agree. And if anyone can recall my other posts this offseason, i have constantly been on the point that OL should be priority number 1. It was in the draft when we picked up Carimi, but not in the FA period (so far anyway). So fine, ill chalk that up to missed opportunity.
And when you look at the bigger picture...its more complex then you guys make it out to be. Some moves ARE improvements. Some are mistakes. And some its too soon to tell, have the potential to go either way. Ill im saying is that people keep that in mind when evaluating our offseason.
