Bears still have $24 million in salary cap space

After a flurry of veteran transactions -- including the trade of Greg Olsen, the release of Brandon Manumaleuna and the addition of players such as Roy Williams, Marion Barber, Amobi Okoye, Chris Spencer and Vernon Gholston -- the Bears are still $24 million under the salary cap of $120 million, according to two league sources.
Entering free agency, the Bears were among the top five teams in the league, in terms of space, with $34 million. Despite the volume of players, the Bears handed out mostly modest, short-term deals. They also kept their own, signing starters like Anthony Adams and Nick Roach, and adding other key role players like punter Adam Podlesh, tight end Matt Spaeth and receiver Sam Hurd.
Although they have plenty of space, the Bears can use up much of it with an expected extension of running back Matt Forte soon and other extensions for players later in the season.

It will be interesting to see how they play this one. Obviously there's still plenty of room to add an Olineman if they can even find one anymore who they consider an upgrade. With this much cap space extending Forte should be pretty easy and that's a move they should make soon. If there's still an excess carrying it for the purpose of offering extensions to guys like Gholston and Okoye if their performance warrants it would also be a good idea.
Looking at this and now considering the fact that they are thinking about bringing Des Clark back to help both as a receiver and a blocker you'd have to say that other than the Oline boners we came out of FA fairly well. If Pisa is healthy enough to re-sign and JA can get at least a Ruben Brown type fill in at OG our grade will move up considerably.

Grab a vet backup for LB and OL, then give the bulk of what remains to Forte up front on his new deal.

Shame we didn't have the balls to go toe to toe for the top FA corners since we had the room.
I agree with sox, more depth at OL and LB and time to throw some serious $$$ at Forte before it's too late and the front office piss him off a la Kreutz, Olsen...
Maybe the Bears are saving room to throw at all these one year deal scrap heap FAs we've signed after a good season? Or maybe they've got an eye on next years FA class. Or maybe we've just bottled it.

Even better.

Give Forte his money, get another cornerback, go get another outside linebacker, and fix that O-line. Leonard Davis is available and is better than Garza, Spencer, and Louis. A giant run blocker wouldn't hurt on those goal line situations.

Sign Corey Graham
Sign Pisa or someone of similar stature like Ben Leber
Sign Leonard Davis
Wouldn't mind us looking into Carlos Rogers
Give rest to Forte

Who do you like that's still out there? The Oline talent is pretty thin unless you're looking at a Ruben Brown kind of two year fix.
