I think Lance Louis has a lot going for him. He played on a merry-go-round last year. He got his feet wet and at times showed some nice kick out blocks and decent footwork. I think his hand fighting needs to improve. Another camp with Tice and reps with the first team I think he and Carimi will be ok on that side.

Yeah, the tools are all there, but man was he sloppy as all hell last season. Not a chance he beats out CWill, IMHO, but he's someone I really think would benefit from playing Center because of his athleticism. I think playing him at guard was a decision to simplify his learning experience so we could get his upside on the field quicker, but in the long-run I believe teaching him C is something that benefits us as much as it benefits him. The fact that we didn't even consider him there this first week is troubling, though, so I guess Tice just doesn't see that in him. He's a solid heir apparent to Garza, but I have to see a ton more from him to think he is worthy of winning that job in the future instead of going the veteran or early draft route.

Of course, Martz HAS to say this especially after implying he wants another vet body the other day. Even if there really is good "progress" in TC (which I hope isn't just bs), how the hell could it hurt to bring in L. Davis or Locklear and give him a shot?
It didn't have to be this hard (on Tice especially). The less-risky and easier way would have been simply to re-sign Kreutz for a year or two, grab a known starting-quality OG out of FA, and let CWilliams, LLouis, Garza, and whoever-else fight it out for the last starting job and depth chart positioning. That would have been WISE, esp. since we have the cap space.
Instead, we will do it the "challenging" way. Only because of Tice's god-like coaching abilities are we able to anticipate the following (rose-colored glasses here) improvements:
Increased size almost all across the OL
CW & LL "stepping up"
Carimi finally banishing OMG from starting
It didn't have to be this hard...
PS: Is there any chance of cooler heads now that might allow OK & JA to still make a 1yr deal? I noticed he hasn't retired or signed elsewhere yet. LL/CW could compete for one OG job while Spencer/Garza could compete for the other OG/(backup C) one. Am I asking the impossible?

Umm..and what DO you have for Center?
"Yeah, um we didnt re-sign Olin, so we picked up another center to replace him, but he might not make the cut. Were gonna try Devin hester at Center...we have to utilize his athleticism and get the ball in his hands."

I like your idea there MPBear, but I don't think that JA likes eating crow, even if it is in the best interests of the team. (I'd REALLY like to see it though)

I'm pulling for the guy but I don't know how many 7th round Olineman we can expect to turn into NFL starters. If Tice can do that with both Webb and Louis he's freakin' Coaching God in my opinion. Teaching him to play OC is intriguing but I think you're right. Either Tice doesn't feel he's got the intelligence and leadership skills for it or he's what you say, Roberto Garza's understudy. I think that's more likely.

Tice is an excellent coach. What he did for J'Marcus Webb last year was nothing short of miraculous. And I agree - it's not too often that lighting strikes twice in a bottle when once considers that most seventh rounders at any position are generally not very highly thought of. Can TIce coach up Lance Louis? We're about to find out very soon.

Let's not count miracles too soon. He's only in his 2nd year and Tice moved him to LT. In the next year or two he could turn out to be either the next Walter Jones or the next Frank Omiyale. He could peak anytime along the way far short of becoming a good NFL LT. Don't get me wrong. I think a lot of Tice and his ability to coach guys up but you still have to have something to work with to begin with. Even the best chefs in 5 star restaurants can't make great dishes with low grade ingredients. Let's not our chicks yet.

You know exactly what I meant, soulman. Who would have thought that we could have gotten anything out of Webb last year after he started the year out horribly? Yeah, he gave up 13 sacks playing RT, but most of those were in the first half of the season if memory serves me correctly, and he was one of our very best run blockers. I never said that Webb completely turned it around, but I did say that what was done to correct many of his technique flaws was miraculous, and Tice is to be commended for that.
