Well strictly looking at the DT spots this is what I see. Dismissing Harrison completely since I don't think he'll make the roster we have two guys who I believe are fixed as starters at their respective positions, AA at NT and Melton at UT. Next up you have Paea and "Toe" who can probably play at either spot so that give us very nice backup strength behind the starters. Finally we have Okoye who played more as a NT in Houston but probably rates as more of a UT in this defense, especially if he's playing lighter than he has in the past.

Assuming all five of these guys make the roster and that both Paea and Okoye are all that we think they can be this could be one ass kickin' group of DT's. There's some real potential there to get after QB's from the inside for a change and that will make the DE's even more effective than they were last year. We should see double digit sacks coming from both DE spots this year.

To me Gholston is a much bigger risk than Okoye but what the hell. We needed another DE/pass rusher anyway so it might just as well be a guy with his upside if we couldn't get a sure thing like Babin. The nice thing about him is that by now he has to know this is his last chance to succeed in the NFL. If he can't turn his game around here as a DE with Marinelli prodding him he probably never will. I like Wootton's prospects for getting his sack totals up more than I do see Gholston turning it around but if there's a spot where we're a little uncertain on the quality of our depth it's at DE.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I can see the logic behind that train of thought. There is a degree of maturation that is involved when a college kid enters the NFL, and that maybe the most important part of the transfer from college to the NFL.

So far that seems to continue to be the case with Gholston. NFP's Matt Bowen was in the Bears camp on Tuesday and his opinion about him was not positive; "Wasn't explosive off the ball and didn't show the ability to win with his hands at the point of attack". (see WR thread). Not a good report on a pass rushing DE clinging to his last chance.

Reports on him sound ominous. Oh well.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

Ah, give him a few pre-season games to see if he's more a game time than practice time player. If he shoots craps cut him.

Both of those issue sound fixable so it's kind of up to what Marinelli thinks he may be able to do with given more time. Sounds like he's ripe to have someone beat him out of the spot though.

As a Buckeye fan, I'd like to finally prove the NFL world wrong for once about the quality of players that have come out of Jim Tressel's front seven over the past few years (post 2002). Cam Heyward got drafted by Pittsburgh, and he may be the last good DT/LB to achieve high accolades at Ohio State to go pro for the foreseeable future. Gholston has been awful, and so has A.J. Hawk.

Okoye-the new "Nigerian Nightmare" had 2 sacks. Gholston had signs of life. Reed and Addison played well at spots in the opener. Projects abound!!
