Forte considers sitting out exhibition games if he doesn't get new contract
BOURBONNAIS — Matt Forte may sit out exhibition games to protect himself if he doesn't have a new contract, and now the shoddy field conditions at Soldier Field give the Bears running back another cause for concern.
General manager Jerry Angelo said there is no timetable for the Bears to complete a contract extension for Forte. Maybe the team would benefit from waiting well into the season because an angry running back is a hungry one. But fortunately for Forte that doesn't seem to be the intention as Angelo said he's "motivated" to get a deal done.
But if Forte doesn't have a new contract in place before the preseason opener Saturday at Soldier Field against the Bills, he may choose to sit out.
"I've considered not playing in the preseason games," Forte told the Tribune. "But just to make that a fact, and say 'I'm not going to,' I haven't gotten there yet."
Forte considered a holdout before camp like the one Chris Johnson has going with the Titans but showed the Bears he's committed to a strong year and good-faith negotiations by reporting. It was a good move on his part, considering the club's policy of refusing to crunch contract numbers with holdouts.
The preseason can chew up running backs. Consider what three teams experienced last summer: The Bears were playing in Cleveland in the exhibition finale when Browns running back Montario Hardesty suffered a torn ACL. The door swung wide open for Arian Foster in Houston when Ben Tate, a second-round draft pick, suffered a severe ankle injury. In Buffalo, Fred Jackson (broken hand) and Marshawn Lynch (high ankle sprain) both were injured in the first exhibition game.
It's why LaDainian Tomlinson got only 14 preseason carries from 2001 to 2008 with San Diego. He and the Chargers didn't want to see his future left on the field in a meaningless game.
Now, Forte also has to consider the shoddy sod at Soldier Field after practice was canceled Friday because of unsafe seams in the grass, the kind that could lead to a twisted ankle or knee.
"Any time the field is not good enough to practice on that is a concern," Forte said. "There is always a concern with injuries. You can get injured going out to practice.
"I have to talk to coach (Lovie Smith) and talk to Jerry and my agent (Adisa Bakari). We'd have to have a big meeting to really talk about (sitting out preseason games until a contract is complete)."
There is a risk in practicing. Bears running back Cedric Benson suffered a dislocated elbow in a training camp practice in 2006.
A 2008 study published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine showed significantly higher risk in exhibition games than training camp practices. The study, over a 10-year period, determined injuries are five times more likely in games than practices. On average, there was one major injury (requiring surgery or landing a player on injured reserve) every two preseason games as opposed to every 28 practices.
Bakari attended practice last week and met with negotiator Cliff Stein and Angelo. The Bears were cautious with Forte in the preseason a year ago, giving him only 12 carries, and Smith said he expects Forte to participate provided he's ready.
"We limit reps for everyone, but it's no different," Smith said. "Contracts don't play a part in anything with us. Matt's out here practicing every day."
Maybe a deal gets done this week.
"Ideally, that's what happens," Forte said. "But there is no telling."

Play the damn game Forte.... you signed the contract now keep your damn word

Forte has a point. A good point. There are many people who , if they were in the same situation, would be thinking the same way. But , if the assurances from the Bears are 100% sincere ( as they probably are ) then he should play. However, if he stays healthy then the Bears better get it done. Forte strikes me as a guy of high principles, and if the Bears jag him around in any way, those principles will make him angry enough to walk.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?
A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

this isn't only against Forte, but every other "I have out played my contract" sit out player. I would love to see a player actually honor his word.
Especially with as little training camp as the Bears have, he needs to play in the damn games.

I'm agreeing with you, but the Bears deal with holdouts rather sternly. Forte could find himself outside looking in if he takes a stand.

forte has done his part. time for the bears to do theirs. only crack on forte is on the goal line and w/what angelo trots out as an offensive line i can understand his lack of success there. to not get this done now is beyond stupid

F That, JA lied to get him into practice by stating a deal would get done in good faith. Then pulled the we don't have a time table to get the deal done. F JA! Sit your ass out Forte, the guy is a cornerstone of this O, helped keep that donkey's job by making this O look mostly respectable in all but one year(a year he playled injured). Now that Jerk doesn't want to give Forte his? Sit your arse out until they pay you like you deserve.
***Caviat to this post*** RB's are lucky to get a 3rd contract, if a rookie RB outplays his rookie contract he should sit out and get an extension going into his final year if the team doens't offer one to him. The RB position gets chewed up and spit out faster then any other skill position, and so quickly that they don't have a chance to get their big pay days.

Most players honor their word, and the number of players who outplay their contract isn't that high so when this type of situation develops on a team it's a different situation. You can't just lump all of them together cuz some of these guys ARE deserving of a new contract. The Bears are making this way too complicated. He's one of those rare exceptions so why drag your feet. All he wants is the respect he deserves . They're playing -with- fire with this guy, and it's just dumb.

Ric, when someone says a contract will get done, what is your time frame for it?
When JA says there is no time frame, that doesn't mean that there wont be a contract done. It is called bargaining. There is likely a deal close, but not one that is completely done. Forte continues to sit out, he could see his starting gig go bye bye
-
So is the player sitting out until he gets his contract, that is also called negotiating. Bet when that teams running game looks like junk in the first couple pre season games, JA will find a better time frame then "x time".
There is no starting RB on this team besides Forte and he knows it. Barber is a 3rd down back, and will struggle beyond that; ecpseically on SF's turf.
Forte sits out until he gets his, and no fan is going to complain about him, but about JA b/c they know why he is sitting out. This FO is losing a lot of credibility w/the players, and it's starting to show, from the turf(think this past weekend's call off has something to do with this?) to letting go/trading of key locker room guys, to the botched trade, to the benching of better players(Knox). And I guarantee Forte already knows the FO has little to no credibility w/the fanbase.
