Story: Tice sets Bears' starting five O-line, unless they 'falter'

By Vaughn McClure, Tribune reporter 8:05 p.m. CDT, August 7, 2011

BOURBONNAIS — Without hesitation, Bears rookie defensive lineman Stephen Paea rattled off the impressive weightlifting numbers he posted prior to entering the NFL.

"My max bench? A little bit over 500 pounds," he said with a smile, trying not to brag. "And 49 (bench) reps at the combine."

Maybe the 6-foot-1, 303-pound Paea can strong-arm his way into significant playing time this season.

The second-round pick from Oregon State is one of two newcomers to the interior of the defensive line, joining Amobi Okoye. Both have already made strong impressions, although Paea missed Sunday's practice with a right knee injury.

"Quickness, and they're tough," defensive line coach Mike Phair said. "Those are the two things that jump out. That's what I really like about them."

Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli's plan for Paea involves bringing him along gradually at both the nose tackle and under tackle spots, with nose tackle to start. Paea hasn't looked the least bit lost and has gotten a few good pushes against the offensive line.

"I'm a rookie, so I don't know which spot I'm really good at," Paea said. "Right now, I'm just going to listen to coach Marinelli to figure which spot is going to be more comfortable for me in the future."

The Bears are testing out Okoye as well with hopes the former 10th overall pick of the Texans will be rejuvenated in Chicago. Okoye, wearing the same No. 91 Tommie Harris left behind, could battle Henry Melton for reps at Harris' old spot.

"He's got the movement," Marinelli said of Okoye. "He's played in what was close to our system, in terms of an under tackle. He's got good rush ability. He understands it. But now he's just got to go out and execute. We've got some real nice candidates."

Marinelli is a firm believer in rotating bodies. Nose tackle Anthony Adams and Melton have been the interior starters from the outset of camp, with Matt Toeaina, Paea and Okoye in the rotation.

"Rod (Marinelli) always says, 'If you see a lot in the beginning, you're going to see a little. If you see a little, you're going to do a lot,' " Paea said. "I'm just trying to put the entire puzzle together."

    Piece by piece.

Looks to me like the inside five on the Dline are set too. AA and Melton will start at NT and UT respectively with "Toe" backing AA and Okoye backing Melton and the rookie playing the swing DT for now. The nice thing about Paea is he's got that combination of rare strength and quickness that allows him to play either DT spot. I think we all knew when they drafted him that it would probably start out this way.

Okoye is still the guy I'm real excited about though. He was never a complete failure in Houston and with so many other teams looking for DT's of his type it's a coup that we got him. If he and Melton really push one another these two guys could give us the best inside rush we've had since Tommie Harris' prime. For once we don't seem to be short on talent and depth at DT.

Good question Mo. Is Toe going to be bopping back and forth at UT/NT or just NT?

I think so. He was as much a hedge against AA not returning at NT as he was another UT to compete with Melton. I guess we'll find out eventually but I think he could excel at either spot.

true but it all depends on where people think toe should line up which is a mystery like SFB just said. IMO Toe is a better NT then a 3 tech guy.

I like seeing all the depth at DT. I haven't been this excited about that position since Kieth Traylor and Ted Washington were down in the trenches. Paea is looking to be a steal and we may see some serious QB pressure next season with all the new pass rushers ala Gholston and Okye. The D looks good as always.

Toe plays the run ok at UT but he's not much of a pass rusher. My guess is that both he and Paea will spend some time working at each spot to see how it breaks out but I think initially Okoye will sew up the backup spot at UT. One thing that can be said though is that this looks like it will stack up to be one hell of a five man roatation. With this much depth keeping these guys fresh all game long should be no problem.

I guess having one of the best defenses year in and year our doesn't count for anything eh 4th?...

I don't recall anyone saying a damn thing about offenses winning championships...

we beefed up an already stellar D and HOPEFULLY upgraded the offense enough to put together another run at the big show.
