I'm super excited about this year. I don't think the line is gonna be anywhere near as bad as everyone thinks...
I actually think we might impress some people.
Those comments by Tice are highlighted in the article by Larry Mayer that in my post #5 above. Louis has put on almost 20lbs in the offseason and Tice seems very committed to him so we'll see what happens. When Spencer takes over at OC Tice can move Garza back to RG and it's possible Louis will move to LG and replace CWill.
I'm glad to hear he's doing well. I'm a fan.

I know a few that won't be impressed either way.

Nerrad won't! Or maybe he will, for a day or so, and then maybe he won't again. Then maybe a week later he will and then later that day he won't.

Just wondering what some of you think about his comments and how he's going about this whole process.
I wish I did not agree with him, but I am cautiously optimistic about the situation.
Some of his comments,
1. J'Marcus Webb is best equipped to play LT.
-I agree lets look at the alternatives, Chris Williams [fail], Frank Omiyale [fail], Gabe Carimi not an ideal athlete. So while he is not Joe Thomas he has the best skill set to do it. I like J'Marcus Webb I think his size and arm length will hide some footwork issues.
2. Lance Louis is an elite pass blocker.
-I do not agree until I can see some pass sets in a preseason game. What I do agree with is that he is 6'3" 320lbs and is an elite athlete with a mean streak. His problems last season appeared to be mental and he has had a year with Tice so I am positive about a change.
3. Chris Williams is a stater.
-Disagree Chris Williams sucks!
4. Roberto Garza at C over Chris Spencer
-I agree 100% with this especially considering that you have a young OL. OL is about trusting the guys next to you and especially the leader at C. This OL needs a veteran presence in the middle to direct traffic and to settle down the young guys. To me Spencer is competing with Williams at LG.

The only thing I've seen about C. Wills that makes sense is that he's used to being a LT. up on your toes and athletic... but playing guard you have to play more like your trying to keep someone from picking you up and go dead weight on your legs almost and "anchor" them into the ground....
I could see where the tendency to return to a more comforatable stance in his legs could lead to him getting put on his back...
that would be why coaches say it's "the little things"...
Now go back to my favorite example of Tice at work. Webb. Everyone had him pegged as a joke last year despite repeated attempts by many to defend the guy... I personally couldn't be happier with where we are at. Really young, and poised to be really freakin good...

Guess theres only one way to find out if this freak show of an OL will work.

I was wondering about Spencer at LG, especially since Tice is set on Louis on the right side.
I really hope they put it all together though. The youth that is being placed in there is kind of scary. Webb, Williams, Louis, and Carimi.... They have less NFL seasons under their cumulative belt than Garza alone. That could be really good or really bad.
Do you see Carimi and Webb switching spots at some point in the future, even if it is after this season? Or do you see Carimi always plaing RG?

Yeah I can see where CWill could have a problem with his technique at OG too. What's good is that Tice has his problem spotted and knows how to coach him out of it. He added a little weight to start the season with so if Tice can get him straightened around on his "anchor" he may do fine.
I'm less worried about him since Tice has such good things to say about Louis' progress. If CWill can't lock down the OG spot and Spencer comes up to speed at least we have the option of kicking him back outside as a swing OT and moving either Louis or Garza into his OG spot.
One point about Webb that some may have overlooked is that he was a LT in college so in addition to his inexperience he was adapting to a new position last year as well. Maybe now that he's back in his more typical spot he'll be more comfortable. With his size if he can just take guys out around the edge and drive them off the pocket he should do ok against most pass rushers. I think the guys he'll struggle with will be the shorter speed rushers who can get inside on him. That's where he may need some help.

I hope for all the world it doesn't come down to that. He has very little experience playing OG so then we have two guys, both him and Garza, playing out of their traditional positions. Better that Spencer gets up to speed and we move either Garza or Louis to LG if CWill can't hack it.
