When I attend a pro camp in this league, I always want to focus on technique and ability during individual periods, competitive settings (one-on-ones), etc. That is where you see the true skill level for players, their footwork and attention to detail.
And that’s why I came away impressed with the Bears wide receivers after checking out practice down in Bourbonnais on Monday. Here are my notes from Chicago’s top four at the position...
ICONHester looks much more polished as route runner at Bears camp.
Devin Hester:
Talk to anyone inside the Bears organization at camp and they will tell you that Hester has had a great camp. What do I see? A player that looks more polished. We all know his lateral speed is unquestioned, but I saw a WR that really exploded out of his cuts. Hester dominated one-on-ones, put some clinic film together vs. press-coverage and showed improved footwork compared to last season. Second year in Mike Martz’s system could produce some numbers for Hester.
Roy Williams:
I wrote about the Bears new WR after the club signed him during free agency—and there were some questions. Is one-day of camp going to change my perspective? No, but I have to say that Williams did surprise me. For a big WR, he had control of his footwork, ran clean routes and didn’t look stiff coming back to the football. He doesn’t have the speed of Hester, but there is no question he can get down the field. And if he can win during the regular season vs. press-coverage, expect QB Jay Cutler to make him a prime target.
Johnny Knox:
Running as the No.3 for the Bears right now, and even if that sticks, we will still see him on the field often in Martz’s offense. I still view Knox as the best pure route runner on this roster and he did add some size to his frame this off-season. The WR can get down the field, run the double-move and should be a player the Bears can align inside in certain situations to give him a “two-way go” (work inside and outside release) vs. a nickel corner.
Earl Bennett:
Think third downs with Bennett. Just like the 2010 season, the Bears were working what I call the “H Post” during practice. Similar to the Hi-Lo concept that we broke down here at the NFP. A two-man combination route run inside of the numbers. That is the scheme for Bennett. Get the underneath crosser with the angle route breaking back to the middle of the field. He is going to see targets again for Cutler. And in this offense he can make plays in crucial situations of the game.
Now, I am not going to compare this unit to the core group of WRs up in Green Bay and there is still time to work before the regular season. But with familiarity in Martz's system there should be some solid production on Sundays from the WR position in Chicago.
Some quick hits from practice…
- I don’t chart passes during practice, but seeing Cutler’s footwork and velocity on the ball was enough for me. He looks ready to play.
-Watching DE Julius Pepppers run through drill work is something to see. Best athlete on the field.
- The Bears aren’t tied to former first-round pick Vernon Gholston and I wouldn’t expect him on the roster to start the season. Wasn’t explosive off the ball and didn’t show the ability to win with his hands at the point of attack.
- Marion Barber fits as a downhill runner in Martz’s offense and should compliment No.1 Matt Forte. Where does that leave Chester Taylor? Considering that he doesn’t play a role on special teams, he may be the odd man out.
- I see good things this season from FS Major Wright. Can get off the numbers in Cover 2 and should make plays as a deep middle of the field safety in Chicago’s man-covergae and pressure schemes.
- Expect Sam Hurd to be the No.5 WR on the roster and play a big role for Dave Toub’s special teams. Opposite CB Corey Graham on punt coverage, the Bears have two gunners that can get down the field.
- The Bears looked like a veteran football team during their offensive install. Plenty of pre-snap movement and multiple personnel groupings. A lot of moving parts after an offseason that was shut down to the lockout.

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Some good news here and maybe the most surprising to date is how Hester is tearing it up so far. If he's producing as well as everyone says it's gonna be damn hard to keep him off the field once the season starts. You have to wonder how that will effect his KR/PR game which to me is still where he becomes the most dangerous guy on the field with the ball in his hand.
The other HUGE surprise was labeling Knox as the best pure route runner. Huh? I thought that's what everyone including his coaches say he needs the most work on. Seems Bowen looks more to him working from the slot than he does Hester. Interesting.
The poop an RWill and Bennett is about as expected and I think Hurd may well be the biggest bargain in FA if he can add to the offense as well as team with Graham as a gunner.
No real surprise from his quick hits. Everything he reports fits with what we've been expecting including the nagging feeling that Gholston may continue to be a failure no matter where he plays or who he plays for. Rex Ryan pretty much said that when he tried to resurrect him in NY. Well nothing much lost there but we still need another DE if he fails.

But, what about Sanzabah?

Blah blah blah, we still have no legit wr that opposing teams fear. If we ever want to put Jay Cutler in the elite class or qbs he needs a legit wr. None of these guys listed are legit and none of them are feared on the field. Hester is not a wr yet we keep craming stories about how good he is looking in camp. Get a legit wr and leave hester at special teams where he belongs. The bears still have the worst core of wrs in the NFC North if not the NFC period. When it comes down to crunch time which wr is going to step up and take over a game? Who is going to be the goto wr that will draw double teams?

Eh, I'm just worried RWill is a "Martz guy" and is placed ahead of knox based on that alone; that Hester is starting over Bennett and Bennett is fighting off Sanzabah is disconcerting. Oh well, it's only TC, can't wait to see what preseason brings us.

Really? is that why teams have flat out said they have game planned for hester?... I believe the quote was "weather he catches a ball or not, you have to know where #23 is"...
that's what a lot of his defenders have been saying... for a guy to scare a defense without catching a pass... and now we hear this?.... true we have yet to see it in action... but if it doesn't get you excited than I truly feel sorry for you, and kinda wonder why you even watch football if all it does is make you into a whiny, crying all the time mess....

did you miss the article where Green Bay Packers DBs were making fun of our wrs saying they are the easiest to play against all you have to do is jam them at the line?

Roy Williams, at least the one from Detroit days, is far better than anyone we have, relieving the pressure off of guys like Hester and Knox. Both of whom should be better in their second year of Martz's system.
PS- I read how Knox bulked up by 15lbs, all of it in his upper body. Hope that translates into better production against the jam (GB) and more fighting for the ball.

hang on.... let me check in with our rival DB's to see what THEY think.... *shakes head*
so... 50 guys pay a compliment and 2 guys dont'.... but we're gonna worry more about those two guys than the other 50 from multiple teams....
yeah.... that makes sense... whatever was I thinking...

Here's my concern with all this talking Martz did about Knox will alienate a young speedburner with good hands, in turn we are left with Roy Williams. There is already whispers of trade talk now with Knox. I don't like this keep them happy, I've seen this show before where Martz brings in Mananaumaalameumenaual and it's and epic failure. I don't want to part with Knox and think he's doing some good things, plus it's nice to smacktalk my friends saying he was part of that Cutler trade.
