BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — This much we know: running back Matt Forte wants an extension, and the Bears want to give him one. That’s the easy part.

Since that was established at the starting of training camp, the two sides have engaged in the sort of back-and-forth diplomacy of U.N. officials. Jerry Angelo said the club intends to sign the running back, while Forte practices in good faith and points to the general manager’s comments.

On Aug. 4, Forte told the Sun-Times that he would honor his rookie contract but that a new deal would be “more difficult” if the Bears wait until next offseason. Days before, though, Angelo said the key was to find a “common ground” while noting that “extensions are much tougher because agents normally look at the UFA market to set their counts.

    “But he’s not a UFA.”

As they search for the common ground, it’s unclear whether the Bears and Forte are even in the same zip code because there are several challenges to overcome.

    First, there’s the timing.

The team and the player’s preference would have been to address this earlier in the offseason. But that wasn’t possible because of the lockout, so Forte made his desire clear as soon as he could, just before training camp.

    Second, there’s his current deal.

Forte is in the final year of his rookie contract, a four-year deal worth $3.7 million, that will pay him $550,000 in 2011. There’s no question Forte’s vastly underpaid, with both of his backups set to make at least twice as much as him. But, especially when it comes to running backs, the club assumes a lot of risk when it proactively gives one a new contract.
Injuries, poor performance and the volatility of the marketplace can make a new deal a bad one for the team.

Last December, approaching the end of his thee-year, $1.76 million rookie contract, Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles signed a six-year contract worth $32 million, including $10 million guaranteed. Charles, who finished the season with 1,467 rushing yards and a gaudy 6.4-yards per carry average, also headed to the Pro Bowl. In his three seasons, Forte has more rushing yards — although nearly twice as many carries — and he’s scored eight more touchdowns than Charles.

Maurice Jones-Drew’s extension will also be a factor. The Jacksonville Jaguars running back signed a five-year, $30.9 million contract in April 2009 with one year remaining on his rookie contract. Jones-Drew collected $17.5 million in guarantees. Like Forte, Jones-Drew was a second-round pick, and is represented by agent Adisa Bakari. But, while Forte has yet to make the Pro Bowl, Jones-Drew has been named to the team twice.

The contract situations of DeAngelo Williams and Chris Johnson have made an already volatile market even more confusing.

The Carolina Panthers aren’t too popular with any of the clubs trying to work out new contracts with running backs. Despite playing in only six games last season, Williams signed a five-year, $43 million contract that included $21 million in guarantees, a record for the position that topped the $20 million in guarantees that Steven Jackson got as part of his six-year, $44 million deal with the St. Louis Rams in August 2008.

On Thursday, the Tennessee Titans declared that they would make Johnson the league’s highest-paid running back. Johnson, who has 4,598 yards and has scored 38 touchdowns in the last three seasons, is currently holding out because of his dissatisfaction with his current deal. He reportedly wants $30 million in guarantees.

In addition, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is also looking for a new contract, although he’s set to make $10 million this season.

The Panthers were desperate to keep Williams, who, unlike Forte, Johnson and Peterson, was an unrestricted free agent. So they overpaid, just as they did with defensive end Charles Johnson.

Running backs are among the most popular NFL players, but the physical demands of the position causes their stock to fall over time. Because some running backs decline suddenly, like Edgerrin James and Terrell Davis, teams can be hesitant to dole out extensions to veterans, even if they are still producing at a high level.

And there are countless other examples of highly-paid running backs who don’t pan out, including former Bear Cedric Benson and former Miami Dolphin Ronnie Brown.

So with the first preseason game coming up Saturday and the regular season opener a month away, the clock is ticking, as the Bears and Forte try to find a happy medium.
We’ve got a pretty good track record,” Angelo said, before talking up team contract negotiator Cliff Stein and Bakari. “So I feel optimistic. But again, we’ll just let that play itself out

I don't like hearing the word "compliations" when it comes to this situation and I also don't like the fact that JA now seems to be "pussyfooting" around the issue instead of making good on his promise to prioritize a contract extensions for him.

Angelo's comments about finding "common ground" and saying that extensions are more difficult with guys who aren't UFA's is just a way of making up excuses for the delay and the fact that they don't want to have to match the deal that DeAngelo Williams got which has become the new standard for RB deals.

There's no question that Carolina overpaid but it's their fault for letting the guy get to UFA without extending him. Forte hints that his deal may get "more difficult" if the Bears wait until that happens too. Too his credit though he says that he will play out his rookie deal if an extension can't be agreed upon. I can think of any one of a dozen reasons why the Bears wouldn't be wise to force that situations on him.

This shouldn't be all that hard to get done if they start with an assumption that a deal somewhere between what Maurice Jones-Drew got in 2009 and what DeAngelo Williams got in 2011 is that "common ground". I don't think something in the neighborhood of $35-$36 mil over 5years with $18 to $20 mil guaranteed is out of line. If they're smart the Bears will get this done before new deals for Chris Johnson and AP drive the market up even higher.

It can't be this difficult to work out a new 4 year deal, can it?

You wouldn't think so would you? The market has been set and his agent is the same one who represesnted Jones-Drew so you know that he'll be looking for at least that much, $31mil/5yrs/$17.5mil guaranteed, in 2011 dollars. If there are complications it may be how to structure those guarantees, not the dollar amount.

The trend has been to reduce the amount of the signing bonus and substitute annual roster bonuses and performance clauses which protect the team from cap nightmare if the player is seriously injured or his production declines drastically. The other factor is that rookie contracts for 1st round picks are much cheaper than they were so that teams aren't forced to pay huge bonuses to unproven players.

Look at what we gave Benson vs what we gave Forte and how much more we got for our $$$ with him. If the price is too high there's a temptation to just go looking for the next Matt Forte rather than overpay like Carolina did and take a huge risk on that RB's future. Like always I think we need to come in fair and fast and get it done befor another deal gets done elsewhere that pushes his asking price even higher. Then there will be a real risk of losing him. Like I said before, this is not one they should screw around with.

I hope they don't think they can just find another top rb in the draft....I posted in another thread all the duds we've had since Neal Anderson. We found a gem; pay him like it.

The guy should not be getting paid less then his 2 backups; who aren't half as good as what he is. F the rest of the Rb's getting paid, the team has set the chicago rb market for it's backups at multi million. Get this stud his deal, make him happy and a Bear for life.

I think we all knew, or at least should have known, that this would become a problem after the enormous contract and guarantees they gave Chester Taylor last year. While I was in favor of getting some vet backup for Forte following that off year in 2009 I never thought they'd pay that much for it. By comparison all we gave Barber was $4.5 or $5 mil over two years and I don't think any of it is guaranteed.

JA made a mistake overspending on medoicre to lousy talent last year and you can't make up for that mistake by making another and that's exactly what they'd be doing if they don't extend him. I believe they'll get it done but not as painlessly or as soon as anyone would like.

This GM simply doesn't know that the starter Should/wants/deserves more money than his backups, with the first case being TJ. Forte is a top 5 back in this league with the potential to be Marshall faulk-like.

That's the other thing HB, this guy is PERFECT for a Martz O. Why risk trying to draft another one?

Forte is perfect and he goes about improving himself every year too. To me he's a Walter Payton type attitude wise as far as staying in shape and the first back we had since Neal Anderson that got a package of skills (run, catch, block) like he has. Part of the problem is the injury factot with RB's in general and the other is that you can find good RB all up and down the draft and as rookie UDFA's. Look at Arian Foster and James Starks.

I think it's a cat and mouse game between JA and Forte's agent right now. His agent is pushing and JA is avoiding trying to keep an upperhand. They'll eventually get something done but for whatever reason the Bears seem to be tightening their purse strings some this year and less prone to overpay like they did in 2010. I think they'll give him the $$$ he's asking for but I think the stumbling block will be the guarantees. Forte's agent will want them upfront as a signing bonus and the Bears will want the majority of it to be roster bonuses and likely to be earned performance bonuses.

The TJ/Benson situation was completely different. In that case, we brought in TJ to BE the backup and anointed Benson the starter by drafting him so high, but TJ proved to be worth more, and Benson worth less.
