This happened to Sean Casey a few years back in Major League Baseball. He didn't get the money he was commanding, so he retired. I guess it's a little different when you also have a wife and young kids to look after but I say play as many years as you can and get as much money as you can. Life is short.

I'm thinking along those lines too. If he can find a vet upgrade for OMG I'm all for it.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Maybe one great example of playing it smart is what Brian Dawkins did in order to play one more year for Denver at age 38. He allowed them to drop the last two years of his deal at $6 mil per in favor of a one year deal for $2 mil. If he hadn't done that he would have been released and would probably had to be content with a vet minimum from another team if anyone picked him up at all.

Looking at it from that perspective by humbling himself he gained $2 mil rather than losing the $12 mil he would never have gotten anyway. I think with the new CBA these backended deals may well be on their way out. It's not in an older players best interest to be in the postion of having to swallow his pride or be released anyway as we're finding out with Olin Kruetz.
