J'Marcus Webb told to 'buck up'

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Chicago Bears left tackle J'Marcus Webb drew the ire of offensive line coach Mike Tice in the aftermath of Saturday's preseason opener when he admitted to not matching the intensity of Bills linebacker Shawne Merriman.

Singled out by Tice for underperforming in a game in which the Bears' first-team offensive line gave up four sacks, Webb said, "maybe individually I didn't match (Merriman's) intensity. He came out as if we were in the regular season, and obviously I didn't."

    More From ESPNChicago.com

Those comments didn't sit well with Tice, who said that Webb ultimately needs to "buck up."

After releasing a long sigh when asked about Webb's comments, Tice said, "I played for a long time, and I don't know that I've had that problem. I have a problem with that from a personal standpoint that a player is saying he didn't have the intensity level. I mean, (expletive), after sitting around for five months you should have plenty of intensity built up inside you. So I'm a little disappointed by that. I heard about that comment. He's got to understand that we put a world of weight on his shoulders. He needs to step up, play better, and he needs to grow up quickly because he's out on an island."

Just days after declaring his starters along the offensive line were set, Tice watched his unit pave the way for the running backs to average 4.9 yards per carry while struggling in pass protection. Responsible for protecting quarterback Jay Cutler's blind side, Webb was responsible for two sacks by Merriman, and also allowed more pressure that led to a third sack.

Webb's struggles came as somewhat of a surprise to Tice, who declared his starting five up front early in part because of their strong performances during training camp practice sessions.

"We had some guys that didn't play well," Tice said. "Not to call anyone out, I think everyone knows who those guys are. It was pretty evident."

Every once in a while you get a lob that you just can't resist, know what I mean? I hate to keep picking on J'Marcus Webb but after the way he played Saturday and his comments following it he deserves it. This ain't West Texas Aggie anymore pal. You're in the big leagues now.

I can just hear it. J'Marcus says, "Aw geez coach, I thought you said to Fuck Up, so I did........sorry".

Think Ditka would have put up with this shit ? No he woulda been in his office and would have got a dressing down that would have made him wet his pants. I'm sick and tired of these wishy-washy pu$$ies. You can see it when they get interviewed. Get pissed and get out there and start brawling, or sit your sissy asses on the bench. This staff has to quit with the molly coddle approach.

What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

If anything you want a guy on that side with a never say die attitude and a burning desire to keep his qb upright. I would not discount Carimi working LT. His desire and attitude may very well make up for any perceived lack of "athletic ability". I think he has what it takes on that side.

Eh, he didn't play well, and said something worse after the game; that's been done only 1000 times before. Let's see how this folds out for him at LT in the preseason before changing based off of one meaningless game. BTW, now that he's gotten the kick in the pants, I'm pretty sure he's gonna be a little more intense, himself.

There is a reason why we tried to sign Bushrod............cause they also think Webb stinks but he is what we have to live with.

I'd have to say that's the next plan to try for exactly the reasons you point out shorty. One thing Carimi does not lack is intensity and he knows what it means to protect his QB's ass because he spent the last four years doing it. Webb may be a nice kid with great athletic ability and potential but he proved on Saturday night by his play and his comments following the game that he's not ready to be a blindside OT in the NFL yet. Make the switch Mike!

No question! That had to be a huge reason why they went after Bushrod with both guns blazing. I mean why when you just drafted a rookie LT with your first pick in the draft would you want to spend $30 mil on another LT unless your plan was to play the rookie at RT all along and you had doubts about Webb? Do they really think that the average Bears fan can't figure that out? Come on man!

After shaky exhibition opener, Bears' Webb picks up intensity in practice

Tice: 'I know for a fact that was his best one-on-ones'

Bears left tackle J'Marcus Webb (73). (Nuccio DiNuzzo/Tribune photo)

By Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune reporter 9:31 p.m. CDT, August 15, 2011

BOURBONNAIS — In theory, if J'Marcus Webb can hold his own in practice against Julius Peppers, he should be fine come Sundays during the regular season. (This is where theory needs to stop and performance begin)

A shaky first outing on Saturday night didn't steer the Bears off course from their plan Monday, at least not on the offensive line. The unit lined up just as it did when the starters allowed four sacks in the first half of a 10-3 victory over the Bills at Soldier Field.

Story: Bears' Barber likes to let his running do the talking Story: Bears may have interest in waived Bills LB Maybin

    • Webb disappointed going against Shawne Merriman, and the Bears can't just be concerned with the combination he will see Monday of Jason Pierre-Paul and Osi Umenyiora at New Meadowlands Stadium against the Giants. The regular-season schedule is packed with pass rushers.

There were 20 players with 10 sacks or more last season, and the Bears face nine of them in a total of 12 games since Green Bay's Clay Matthews (13.5 sacks), Detroit's Ndamukong Suh (10 sacks) and Minnesota's Jared Allen (11 sacks)come around twice. The regular season starts with the Falcons, who have John Abraham (13 sacks) and bulked up their line by signing former Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards.

Whatever fire line coach Mike Tice lit under Webb after the game — and the guess here is it was a multi-alarm blaze — it worked Monday afternoon. Webb was as intense as he has ever been in practice, walling off Peppers in one-on-one pass-rushing drills.

"I can't wait to see the film," Tice said. "I know for a fact that was his best one-on-ones. He's a hell of a talent. He just needs to realize that just because you're gifted, it's not going to be easy."

Webb and the offensive linemen ran sprints after practice, something they don't do very often.

"I took it upon myself to practice with more of a purpose and practice with more intensity," he said.

Webb probably regrets saying after Saturday's game that he didn't match the intensity of Merriman, the former Pro Bowl star who has been derailed for three seasons by injuries.

"I played for a long time and I don't know that I ever had that (intensity) problem," Tice said. "I have a problem with that from a personal standpoint — a player that's saying he didn't have the intensity level. I mean, after sitting around for five months you should have plenty of intensity built up inside you.

"He's got to understand we put a world of weight on his shoulders. He needs to step up and play better and he needs to grow up quicker. He's out on the island with our philosophy this year, hoping that we don't keep backs in and chip. He needs to buck up."

Fair or not, a seventh-round pick from 2010 is under the microscope, and to a great degree, the success of quarterback Jay Cutler and the offense depends upon that position excelling. Remember, Mike Martz's Greatest Show on Turf in St. Louis had the blind side anchored by Orlando Pace, one of the best left tackles of the last two decades.

Does Webb believe he's being spotlighted?

"Depends on who you ask, I guess," he said.

"I'm not looking at (the Bills game) as a hiccup. I'm looking at it as a chance to get better, something to build off of, something not to take for granted."
