Tice looking for line to improve

By: Larry Mayer | Last Updated: 8/15/2011 10:02 PM

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Mike Tice is more encouraged with the Bears offensive line than he was at the same point last year. But that doesn’t mean he’s satisfied with the unit’s performance in the preseason opener.

Offensive line coach Mike Tice watches a drill during a recent training camp practice.“We had a handful of guys that played good and I think those guys are evident,” said the veteran offensive line coach. “We had a couple guys that were on the cusp of playing winning football but didn’t. And then we had some guys that didn’t play well.”
Though Tice declined to name names, left tackle J’Marcus Webb and right guard Lance Louis appeared to struggle the most in Saturday night's 10-3 win over the Bills. On the final play of the Bears’ opening possession, Louis was beaten for one of Buffalo’s nine sacks and Webb was flagged for holding.

“I think everybody knows who those guys are [who didn’t play well],” Tice said. “It was pretty evident. They’re young. They need to improve this week. Normally from the first preseason game to the second guys make a big jump, and we’re looking for that big jump. I thought they bounced back today at practice and practiced well. We’re looking for improvement each and every day.”

Tice was surprised that Louis, who has been performing well in training camp, didn’t play at the same level against the Bills. Of course, facing rookie Marcell Dareus may have had something to do with that.“Maybe part of his weakness is he went against a guy who was drafted second in the draft,” Tice said. “I mean the guy was drafted there for a reason.

“Anytime that you try to be overly aggressive with a guy and try to head butt him and kill him, knock him off his feet and get yourself spread out, you’re going to get beat. That’s what happened to Lance on the two occasions. He got himself overextended.“He was the guy I was a little bit surprised at. As well as he’s been practicing, he gave up a couple of big plays, bad plays. I think he’ll have a great week of practice and bounce back and play better this week.”

Tice was probably most disappointed to hear that Webb told reporters after the game that he had failed to play with as much intensity as his opponent.“I played for a long time and I don’t know that I ever had that problem,” Tice said. “I have a problem with that personally, from a personal standpoint, at a player that’s saying he didn’t have the intensity level. After sitting around for five months you should have plenty of intensity built up inside you. I’m a little disappointed about that. I heard about that comment.

"He’s got to practice better and he’s got to understand that we put a world of weight on his shoulders. He needs to step up and play better and he needs to grow up quicker because he’s out on the island [at left tackle]. With our philosophy this year—hoping that we don’t keep backs in and chip and get our guys out and more opportunities and more looks for the quarterback to get rid of the ball—he needs to buck up.” (Remember J'Marcus, that's Buck Up, not Fuck Up. There's a difference)

A bright spot in Saturday’s win was that the Bears rushed for 164 yards on 35 carries.
“We did run the ball pretty well,” Tice said. “You don’t just run for 164 yards with nobody blocking anybody. So that is an encouraging sign.”

Tice said Monday that he doesn’t intend to make any changes with the starting line this week. In addition to Webb and Louis, the unit is comprised of left guard Chris Williams, center Roberto Garza and right tackle Gabe Carimi. (Sighs)

“We don’t want to play musical lines right now and we don’t want to hit the panic button because the numbers are what they are,” Tice said. “We can make a lot of the numbers. We can say we gave up nine sacks and then we can look at the ones that the line is accountable for and see if it’s possible to correct those things, and I really believe that we can.

“We’re going to work diligently on correcting those things this week and hopefully bounce back and have a great week of practice and carry more of those good practices over to the game.”

The line will be tested on the road next Monday night by a New York Giants defense that set an NFL record and knocked Jay Cutler out of a game last season in recording nine sacks in the first half of a 17-3 victory. (I can hardly wait to see how this comes out. Ugh!)

“What a great challenge and what a great team to play against this week, a team that totally embarrassed us last year,” Tice said. “We should have a chip on our shoulder going into that game.”

Well we all know what he's already said about Webb and I imagine that should take care of that. He's either gonna be better this week or he should be gone from LT the next. I don't like how he cut an excuse for Louis though. I don't care how good Marcell Dareus is he's a rookie and Louis isn't. If he can't at least contain him how in the hell will he play against long time vets? Shoot, they'll eat him alive.

Tice seemed to nail down his problem with his style of approaching him so hopefully it changes but that along with Webbs claim of lacking intensity just prove why this line shouldn't be left in the hands of inexperienced guys who seem to lack the smarts, not athletic ability, to play their role well. For all the coaching those two have had they still play stupid and there is no cure for stupid.

A couple of comments from Greg Gabriel on two Bears lineman.

    Lance Louis
Louis has the physical tools to be a very good guard in the league. He has size, strength and rare athletic ability for such a big guy (6-3 and 320). His problem has been he doesn’t play in games the way he practices and this was the case again this week. He got beat a couple of times in pass protection giving up a sack and a pressure. His problem has been sustaining his pass blocks. He has to do a better job holding his position on his opponent. If he doesn’t show improvement this week, the Bears may want to move Roberto Garza back to right guard and play newly signed Chris Spencer at center.

    Gabe Carimi
A few days into camp, Carimi was given the starting right tackle job. He played as if he belongs there. Carimi has size, power and athletic ability. He showed good run block skills and didn’t look like a rookie playing his first professional game when pass blocking. He has a strong punch, moves his feet well to mirror and can anchor. If he stays healthy he will be a fixture at tackle for years to come.

My take on this is simple. Mike Tice has called Lance Louis an "elite pass blocker" yet he was anything but come game time Saturday. The guy practices like Tarzan and plays like Jane and to me he just doesn't have it together enough to be a starter. We went through this with him last years for four games before he was benched and that shouldn't happen again this year.

Tice should do what Gabriels suggests and move Garza, who is a good run blocker and at least an adequate pass blocker, back to RG and let Spencer take over at OC. Louis seems to be another of Tice's pet projects and a lot of us would like to see Louis succeed as a starter but I just don't think he's ready for it mentally yet. He needs another year of apprenticeship behind Garza.

Gabriels description of Carimi especially where he says, "he didn't look like a rookie playing his first professional game when pass blocking" should also tell Mike Tice that his experiment with J'Marcus Webb at LT might be over as well. Even though both played LT in college to me Carimi is athletic enough for LT and far more mentally prepared for the responsibility that goes with it.

Tice claims that Webb had a good practice yesterday but then again hasn't he been saying that about both him and Louis ever since camp began. Then they get into a game and both look like they have no idea of what they're doing. I think we can trust Gabe Carimi to protect the blindside and I think that's far less certain with Webb no matter how well he practiced. Tice should flip the two for a week and then see who plays better where before etching these two guys playing positions in stone.

    Chicago Bears Arrogant Coaches?

The choices made by JA just show this coaching staff is very confident that they can make more out of these washed up players than other coaches could. This is a nice idea, but sometimes players are simply bums. I feel the washed up former head coaches on the bears are projecting themselves into the shoes of the washed up players they've acquired a bit too much. Let's hope they're right and it's not arrogance or weakness.

PS - I never liked Olsen or Kruetz that much, but I won't say I'm happy to see them go either.

Also, what's the deal with players who "practice well," but don't "show up" for games? I can't understand that... is it nerves?

I believe it's primarily the speed of the game. Practice is going at about 3/4 speed when you're against your own guys. Coaches and players may say that's not true but if you ever watched a training camp practice you know that it is. The same speed and intensity that comes in the game isn't there so guys like Louis get accustomed to that and their efforts are based on that. Then they get into the real thing and they can't think quick and adapt well enough to cope.

That seemed to be Louis problem last year and I think it's still his problem. The athletic ability is there but the speed of the mental process isn't and he's not experienced enough to let his instincts take over. I think it's the same with Webb. Tice sees these guys do great in practice but they can't match up at game speed. When you watch them it's pretty obvious. They look lost out there.

It's way better to try to get these guys used to game speed during the preseason. I hope that they get up to speed before the regular season starts. Until the regular season, I'm concerned, not panicked.

(Maybe if I keep telling myself that, I'll start to believe it...) OOOOOooooooohhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......

The showing up part can be based on the salary that particular player is getting. For instance take a look at Tommie Harris, he was a beast until he got his huge contract, even injured he showed up but once he landed that big contract he became instant lazy. The only time he would show up would be the last couple of games where he had to convince Jerry Angelo to keep him and it worked a couple of times.
