Davis emerging as complete tight end

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Kellen Davis boasts the ideal size and blocking ability to play tight end in Mike Martz’s offense. But the 6-7, 267-pounder showed again Tuesday night that’s also capable of contributing as a receiver.
Tight end Kellen Davis was selected by the Bears in the fifth round of the 2008 draft.Continuing to work with the No. 1 offense, Davis hauled in two long passes from Jay Cutler in 7-on-7 and 11-on 11 drills, much to the delight of a large crowd at Ward Field in Bourbonnais.
“He’s blocked well and he has the ability to do everything we want our tight end to do,” said coach Lovie Smith. “He’s got speed to get down [the field]. He’s running good routes. He can catch the football. We expect plays like that from him.”
As the third tight end last season behind Greg Olsen and Brandon Manumaleuna, Davis caught just one pass during the regular season—a 19-yard touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings.
A year later, Olsen and Manumaleuna are no longer with the Bears, and Davis has ascended to the top of the depth chart ahead of free-agent acquisition Matt Spaeth and veteran Desmond Clark.
“It’s a lot easier to play faster and play harder when I get more reps,” Davis said. “I’m getting a lot of reps every practice and just building on what I did the day before and trying to get better every day.”
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Be interesting to see how he does as a pass catcher this year even though that's not his primary role. He showed last year that he can get upfield on seam routes and catch that deep pass and we already know from past experience that Des Clark is very good at that. I still think we'll miss Olsen but maybe having both Davis stepping up and Des back in the fold will ease the pain. These guys need to give us some scoring punch in the redzone and also get open in those key 3rd and long situtations.

Im hoping hes a pretty good pass catcher that would be pretty awesome but i dont think were going to miss olson that much sure he was good at pass catching but he was average at best on blocking and he wasnt very good at running after the catch

I'm usually the last one to get all grammer nazi....but Cam, man. I got a few comma's/period's I could sell you for real cheap!
I remember when K. Davis first got drafted, lots of talk about him being the best all-round athlete on the team. Now I'm not sure he's quite the receiver that Olson is, but he had a few plays that should put his receiving capabilities to rest...boy knows how to get up and get it!
Glad to hear that Davis is still playing hard. Between him and Clark, I doubt we'll have any second doubts about letting Olson go at the end of all this.

davis has been dynamite catching passes. he's not caught a lot of them, but a good portion have been TD's and I don't think he's ever dropped a ball that came his way.

Maybe what we had with Olsen was the same kind of player that you'd have in a "tweener" type LB/DE. A guy who isn't either as Olsen was kind of a big WR playing TE. If the Bears are gonna insist on playing with this Oline as is we will need some serious in line blocking from the TE's and even Des Clark was better at that than Greg Olsen was.
Davis is 6'7" and almost 270lbs and even if he doesn't quite have Olsen's speed he has shown good hands and an ability to find the end zone. You're right about that Grizz. Based on what I've seen so far he and Des should be sharing the TE role and they should limit Spaeth to being that spare OT Martz thought Manu could be. Just keep them out of the backfield that's all I ask.
