Morrissey Says; Forte Good But Not Worth Huge Payday...................

Bears’ Matt Forte is good, but he’s not worth a huge payday

    RICK MORRISSEY rmorrissey@suntimes.com August 25, 2011 9:48PM

It’s tough to criticize the Bears for being conservative with Matt Forte in contract negotiations. | Tom Cruze~Sun-Times

    Updated: August 26, 2011 2:17AM

I think we can all agree that Matt Forte’s 42-yard catch against the Giants was the one and only highlight of his preseason so far. If we can’t agree on that — if you believe his four rushes for seven yards are a small package of grace and beauty — then I’m guessing you still pine for the Curtis Enis era.

Don’t worry: Forte is not Enis. He’s not Rashaan Salaam nor Cedric Benson nor most of the running backs who have tried to fill Walter Payton’s white-taped shoes. But what is he? That’s the question in front of the Bears as they try to decide how to pay a guy who believes he should be in line for a huge payday.

Let’s start with what Forte isn’t: He’s not an elite running back. He’s not Maurice Jones-Drew. He’s not Chris Johnson. He’s not Adrian Peterson. He’s not going to make something out of nothing along the line. But he’s an excellent fit for offensive coordinator Mike Martz’s system. He’s very good at catching short passes and making something happen, as he showed on Jay Cutler’s screen pass Monday night. He can run the ball, but more than most backs in the NFL, he needs good blocking to get yards.

Forte considers himself one of the best running backs in the league. “Production-wise, it says I am,’’ he said after practice Thursday. “Whether to the media or to the fans, whether I’m underrated or overrated to them, it doesn’t matter. If you look at stats, I am.’’

Last year, he rushed for 1,069 yards (a career-best 4.5 yards per carry) and caught 51 passes for 547 yards. That’s good stuff. Not great stuff, but good stuff. His total yards were 11th among running backs in 2010.

So what do you pay someone like that? What if Martz, who’s in the last year of his contract, isn’t back next season? What if the next coordinator decides to get off the bus running? And does Forte look to be the kind of back who will be able to hold up under constant punishment? (I think he's gonna be a fit no matter who the OC is and no one should question his durability. This is all bullshit)

Those are legitimate questions, but all Forte sees is that he’s in the last year of a four-year, $3.7 million contract, which is relative peanuts. He sees Carolina’s DeAngelo Williams signing a five-year, $43 million contract and wonders, “Why not me?’’ (But unlike CJ he's never said or even indicated he's expecting that kind of deal. Again this is a writer crap stirring)

Well, unlike Forte, Williams has a Pro Bowl appearance under his belt, as does Kansas City’s Jamaal Charles, who signed a six-year, $32 million contract last year. That deal seems more in line with someone of Forte’s abilities. No one outside of a few people know what he’s asking, and all he would say about it Thursday was that the two sides are still negotiating. (A reasonable figure for someone of Forte's abilites)

The Bears can dole out their money any way they choose — and it sure would be nice if general manager Jerry Angelo started spending some of the $19 million the team has in cap space — but it’s hard to criticize them for being conservative with Forte. He’s the kind of running back whom Bears fans easily fall in love with, and by that I mean he’s pretty good. They’ve seen a lot of mediocre backs over the years. But Forte a star? On Thursday, one gambling website released its MVP odds for the 2011 season. Of the 34 players on the list, 11 are running backs. None goes by the name of “Matt Forte.’’

The list includes Houston’s Arian Foster, which brings us to a broader point. There are running backs out there who are lacking one thing: a chance. (This is where the odds catch up with Forte. Foster was an UDFA so the arguement in the front office can be why can't Bell be just as good if he had the chance)

The Texans signed Foster as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee in 2009. Last year, he won the starting job and finished with 1,616 yards and 16 touchdowns on 327 carries and caught 66 passes for 604 yards. He led the league in rushing and made the Pro Bowl.
History has shown that success can be had despite the loss of good backs.

Denver might have started the trend in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when it made do with Olandis Gary (1,159 yards), Mike Anderson (1,487) and a string of other backs after Terrell Davis’ career was cut short by injuries. The running back position hasn’t been devalued. The people playing the position have been devalued.

The Bears are pleased with the way Forte has handled his contract uncertainty. There was some talk that he might sit out training camp, but it never happened. “I think the way he’s done everything since he showed up here the first day dressed in a suit . . . ready to go on a business trip, that’s what we got from him,’’ coach Lovie Smith said. “We realize he has a contract issue going on right now, but he’s come to work every day, hasn’t missed a beat, a practice.’’

Forte shrugs. “I do what I do all the time: go out and work hard,’’ he said. “That’s what you do to get better, right?’’

But what do you do to get filthy rich instead of just fabulously rich? That’s the question. (When did Forte ever claim that he wanted a deal that would make him filthy rich? That's CJ you're talking about not Matt Forte.)

I posted this to keep the topic current but also to give another writers slant on the situation. To me most of it is a crap stir with Morrissey putting his own words and thoughts into Forte's mouth but his comparison of Forte being deserving of a deal similar to what KC gave Jamaal Charles is a fair take on it.

Forte has never said (unlike CJ) exactly what he's looking for as far as the $$$ is concerned and he's shown up in camp and games doing it the way he always has. Maybe Forte is not DWill, Jones-Drew, CJ or AP who will almost certainly be asking the Vikes to match whatever CJ can squeeze out of the Titans. There can only be one highest paid RB and I think AP will happily wait until after CJ gets his to set the mark.

DeAngelo Williams deal averages around $8 mil per year and you know CJ and AP are gonna be looking north of a $10 mil per year average on theirs so I can't see Forte getting a deal which averages between $5 and $6 mil per year as being out of line. He's worth franchise RB money at the least because that's what they'll have to pay to keep him beyond 2011 if they don't agree on an extension.

I'd put Forte under AP, Foster, CJ, and on the same level as MJD and that's about it. He deserves to be paid like a top 10 rb w/out question, and probably higher then that.

Do I have to go over the crap fest of rb's we've had since Neal Anderson again? We finally got a gem, don't throw him away b/c you think you can easily find another one.

Yeah about one article out of ten he writes is surprisingly good and the others are like this. He could have made his poinst quite well without his having to put words in Forte's mouth of things he's never said. Forte has approached this thing with a lot of class and this wasn't a classy way to depict what's going on.

To me it's pretty easy to list the top 5 RB's in the NFL and I don't think any of us would include Forte in that group. He's incredibly productive but there are some things that he's not as good at as others so that puts him a notch or two behind them. But when you extend that list to the top 10 then I think he makes it with ease and he needs to be paid like it.

It would have been very easy to have written that article from that slant instead approaching it and titling the way he did. But headlines like this grab attention and sell newspapers and that's what he gets paid for. Somebody had to fill Moronotti's role and at least Morrissey isn't a big a jerk as that prick was.

Soul, I'm not saying he's the best, but I doubt the top rb's could have done much better then what Forte has done behind that OL he's had to play with. I think he's right up there just a notch or two behind the truly elite(peyton/brady's of the rb position). He also doesn't fumble which is huge; and has shown, outside of one year, to be durable. With a real legit OL, I could see Forte easily being in the top 5, maybe 6th latest. W/the current OL he's top 10...and that's saying something.

I agree with what Morrissey says about forte. Finish your contract out and then negotiate a new contract next year or leave for a different team.

Yeah there are a lot of intangibles surrounding him that don't show up in the rushing and receiving yards stats. He doesn't put the ball on the ground and as a receiver he has some of the best hands on the team. He knows his assigments on blitz pickups and he's big enough to carry them out. Now add to that his 1700-1800 yards of total offense and yeah, he's definitely a top 10 back.

That's pretty harsh 4th and I don't think that's what Morrissey was saying. I think his whole point, though he could have made it differently, is that Forte isn't deserving of a top 5 RB type of deal. We don't know exactly what he's looking for because to his credit it's not being negotiated in the press but I doubt he believes he'll get that kind of money now. Maybe if he hits FA he might but I still think he'd settle for something in neighborhood of $30-$35 mil over 5 to 6 years. That's where he fits and it's doable.

The only Bears back in their history to have over 1,400 combined yards his first 3 seasons. Yea the Great Moronssey is right .... he doesn't 'deserve' a new contract.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?
