Angelo Deserves Blame for Williams Circus; A Fair Viewpoint....

    Blame Williams circus on Angelo

Stop with the Memory Lane signings already

    Dan McNeil August 26, 2011

If Roy Williams should drop a pass that hits him right in the hands Saturday night in Nashville, don't curse at him.

Spare your contempt for Williams if he fails to throw a block on a would-be touchdown. Or if he false starts.

    Dan McNeil
Recognize that the Bears' biggest disappointment thus far is merely a product of his occupation: professional wide receiver. With said vocation comes privileges like being over-drafted (7th overall in 2004 in Williams' case), over-loved, over-paid and, with frequency, afforded a license to behave like a spoiled brat.

I'm sending the blame for the Williams circus to Jerry Angelo. This is his mess.

And I won't spend another minute allowing Williams to get my blood pressure up the way he did Monday night. He did it again when he spoke about his bad night against the Giants two days later.

It won't happen again. I'm done with the flaky, underachieving Williams.

You should be, too. All negative feelings should be plopped in the lap of Angelo, the latest to enable Williams along his path of unfilled expectations.

The more I've thought about it, the less I'm willing to let Angelo slide because he only signed Williams to a one-year deal. It is another exhibit of Angelo being swung by a coach — in this case, Mike Martz — whose affection for a former player outweighed common sense.

Did Angelo and Martz really buy that Dallas quarterback Tony Romo just didn't like Williams and preferred the buddy system with Miles Austin and tight end Jason Witten? Was it an inept Cowboys coaching staff that was most responsible for the former University of Texas star's eternally mortal 65 receptions and 12 TDs over the past two seasons?

    Bad judgment. Again

Angelo hasn't learned how to say "no" when his coaches allow their thinking to be clouded by previous relationships with players in other towns. And it's been five freaking years since Williams and Martz collaborated on the only dynamic season in the receiver's seven-year career, when he led the NFC with 1,300-plus receiving yards.

It's reminiscent of when Lovie Smith had to have Redskins castoff Adam Archuleta (a Smith favorite from his days in St. Louis) in 2007. Archuleta started only 10 games that season, intercepting one pass and forcing and recovering a fumble. For that, the Bears paid $5 million of the $8.1 million deal to which they signed him.

Two years ago, Angelo got duped when former Rams left tackle Orlando Pace was "available." Pace earned $6 million for his 11 starts.
    • (Is he just being nice not mentioning Taylor, Manu and Collins from 2010)

Stop with the Memory Lane signings already.

Every time Williams bobbles a ball, it's Angelo's drop. And yes, Roy, there were two of them in the new Meadowlands Monday.

Every time the receiver condescends to reporters — sarcastically calling one "coach" Wednesday — the mindless babble is coming from Angelo's mouth.

This is Jay Cutler's third season to become the Bears' long-awaited franchise quarterback. And Roy Williams is Angelo's big move to give Cutler the tools to succeed? Mercy.

I'm happy the Bears have one less than Devin on the roster, but they are again underwhelming at receiver. That's on the general manager, not the player. Williams just makes himself an easy target because he actually thinks he's special. He's anything but and Martz apparently convinced Angelo otherwise.

Looks like that receiver vineyard is just as difficult to find as the tackle vineyard. Here's a hint: Don't ask coaches to help you locate it.

Dan McNeil co-hosts "The McNeil and Spiegel Show" weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on WSCR-AM 670.

I can't really argue with a single thing has has to say about this deal. Once again JA let's himself get talked into another one of Mike Martz "I gotta have him" guys. How is this any different than any of his 2010 "needs"? The plain old simple answer is it's not.

I love the way McNeil hits JA square between the eyes over his all too willingness to give in to Martz on these deals. Has he been right on even one guy yet and he even leaves last years misses out of his rant. (I didn't though)

There was an everlovin' pile of bigger WR's out there and somehow we came out with the worst choice of all. Imagine that! We passed on Plax, Ocho, Sims-Walker, and Floyd, to name a few, for this big mouth with his bad hands and fvcked up attitude? Somebody better tell Roy that he's in Chicago now and the fans and the press aren't gonna put up with the bullshit he pulled in his interview following the Giants game.

If it were up to me I'd hitch his ass to the nearest Greyhound back to Texas, put Knox back in his staring role and start bringing guys like Hurd and Sanzenbacher into the picture. If we keep Williams we wast more than $1.5 mil. We waste all of the chances he'll get to screw up that should have gone to other receivers and the yardage, first downs, and TD's that go along with it.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

The Rudy's of this world ( like Waddle ) are uncommon. Unfortunately jive-asses are.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

Honestly, I still didn't mind that we picked him up, but Martz being allowed to put him in the number one slot when he's clearly nowhere near that from the beginning is disgusting. But, I didn't mind as long as we got a Sims-Walker too. At least then, we would've gotten someone who could be effective, and one that's merely a roadblock to other players. Then again, if Sanzanbah and Hurd pan out, would we have picked them up if we signed 2 wrs?

We could have had Malcom Floyd and done far better. Sims-Walker would also have been a worthwhile addition but either of them would have been more costly than RWill. Well we're getting exactly what we paid for. A one year wonder with a big mouth, bad hands and a fvcked up attitude. I think it would be a huge mistake if he even made the roster and you heard it here.

As I said in another post, we've got the best collections of #2 guys in football. So what if we don't have a true #1. Screw it! Spread the ball around and start working Hurd into some of the routes we would have used RWill for. Martz has already said he's learned all three WR positions and the guy wants reps. Same with Sanzenbacher. They can say all that the want about his size and speed, or lack thereof on both scores, but the guy gets open and he catches the ball. These two guys are working there tails off daily for the opporunity that Williams was simply handed. That is complete bullshit and so is RWill is a Bears WR.

Honestly, on a one year deal (interesting, Barber got a 2 year deal), he should have to "know his place", kinda like how Sanzabah has had to fight to prove he's worthy of making the roster. The worst thing about him is, kinda like Roche Caldwell against the Colts in the 2006 AFC Championship, he could be the only WR open, have the perfect opportunity to make a first down, and **** drop it. If i were an opposing defensive coordinator, I'd plan for 10 men on the field every time he's on, until/unless he proves otherwise.

Again, he didn't have to know his place; martz and drake let him know his place when he walked into the door....#1 wr. Guy is a ginormous bag of suck; hell I would have rather JA and Martz gone w/what they had said before camp, they don't need a big wr, then this douche. But this was the org going cheap; almost to spite the fans. Oh fans you want a big wr, lets show you what big wr's look like.

Sorry mo but he deserves a bashing for this one because he keeps making the same mistakes year after year so we call him on it as does McNeil in this article.

I'll cut him some slack on Archuleta. We needed Safety help badly and Lovie thought he could motivate him. I think he should have known that when the guy laid down like a tired old hound dog after got his whopper contract from the Skins he was getting a guy who just didn't give a shit anymore because that's exactly what we got. And he was one and done.

I'll even do the same regarding Pace. Once again we had a huge need for a LT and if Pace would have even played at a serviceable level it may have worked until we got someone else up to speed. So strike two at LT when you take OMG into consideration and again I'll cut him some slack because mistakes are made.

But beginning last year he started listening far to much to Martz whine about what he needed to make his prized offense work. Well so far that offense hasn't worked all that well and the players; Manu, Taylor, and Collins not at all. So how much different is this Roy Williams thing mo? This makes the fourth offense player in two years that can't even come in a make a half way decent showing of himself. Maybe I'm a bit frustrated with it all but not without just cause. Mike Martz is fvcking up this offense in about the same fashion that Wanny did his defense. Neither of them have any personnel management skills whatsoever but both were/are being given a huge roll in exactly that. And that you can lay directly at JA's feet.
