Five Things to Watch in Titan's Game...............

Bears at Titans: 5 things to watch

Chief among them is pass rush, where Peppers needs help

Will Saturday's exhibition game against the Titans be Chester Taylor's last in a Bears uniform. (Scott Strazzante/Tribune photo)

By Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune reporter 6:47 p.m. CDT, August 26, 2011

The back end of the Bears defense stuck out as a reason for concern when it was last on the field.

Major Wright missed badly trying to tackle Giants running back Brandon Jacobs in the open field. Wright had some other plays that didn't go his way and as the free safety — who can be the difference in a 20-yard play and a touchdown — there are fair questions for him.

But what makes the defense go is the front end, specifically the four down linemen. Lovie Smith's unit is coming off its best season since the Super Bowl year of 2006 and that's because newcomer Julius Peppers buoyed the front. But the Pro Bowl performer can't do it alone and one explanation for his eight sacks — only the third time in nine seasons he has been in single-digits — is the lack of a pass rush around him.
Here are five things to watch in Saturday's visit with the Titans with the starters expected to play into the fourth quarter in their third exhibition:

    1. The Bears had 34 sacks a year ago, 17th in the NFL. Of course, sacks aren't the only measure of pass pressure and no one will tell you that faster than former defensive coordinator Greg Blache. The most sacks the Bears have had in the last decade is 48 in 2001 under Blache.

Defensive tackle Amobi Okoye had two sacks against the Bills in the first exhibition but there hasn't been a lot of pressure.

Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said he doesn't like to blitz much before the games count. First, he wants to see what the players can do man-on-man as he doesn't want to win with scheming. Second, he doesn't want to tip his hand.

The blitz wasn't a big thing under Marinelli anyway in his first season as coordinator. According to Football Outsiders, the Bears rushed five men or more only 22 percent of the time on third down, the lowest figure in the league. The players around Peppers, including left end Israel Idonije, need to ramp up the pressure.

    2. Peel away the big compliments being thrown at the offensive line and the Bears are cautiously optimistic about the current lineup.

But nothing is set. As much as line coach Mike Tice wants continuity, it's a week-by-week process.

The focus remains on right guard Lance Louis because swapping him out and sliding Roberto Garza to his spot and inserting veteran Chris Spencer at center is an easy switch. Louis needs another strong game to maintain hold of the job.

    3. There hasn't been this much noise about a Bears wide receiver coming off a 37-catch season like Roy Williams since dare we say David Terrell. Terrell, the last first-round draft pick before the Jerry Angelo era, had a gift for gab like Williams. It's approaching put up or shut up time for the free-agent addition though.

You have to wonder if the folks in Williams' camp in the organization are dwindling.

    4. Special teams was sloppy last time out but the only way Dave Toub believes he truly can evaluate rookies is by playing them against the starters from other teams. So look for fresh faces in all four phases against the Titans.

If they can't pass the test, someone needs to be paying close attention to the waiver wire for veteran help.

    5. Is Chester Taylor in his final eight days in a Bears uniform?

Kahlil Bell has momentum off a strong exhibition debut and has special teams value but will Angelo cut the second member of his big three signing spree from a year ago? Forget the idea Taylor is tradable. Who is going to fork over a draft pick for a soon-to-be 32-year-old back who averaged 2.38 yards per carry last season and is due $1.25 million?

Well there ya' have it folks. At least Biggs opinion of it anyway. I'd comment as follows:

    1) The pass rush must be better this week. I waited all game long for them to break through but nada. We know we have DE's who can rush and hopefully that will improve again when we get Wootton back. In the meantime give Nick Reed as many snaps as you can and let Gholston and Addison duke it out for the last spot. Of the three Reed looks to be the keeper.

The inside pass rush has to improve this year big time but after two sacks against the Bills Okoye got shut out. He needs to bring it every week and not just every once in a while. Melton has also been shut out as far as sacks are concerned although both he and Okoye have made some nice run stops behind the line. But come on guys. Peppers and Izzy can't be the only ones harassing the QB. We need that pressure up the middle to take away passing lanes and force them to hold the ball. You guys aren't getting that done.

    2) Once again it's on Webb and Louis to continue making improvements. They were better last week but far from great. Taking Louis out for Garza and installing Spencer at OC is the easy part. It's the potential failure of Webb and Tice's insistence on not moving Carimi that has me bothered. Let's face it. There is no help out there anywhere at LT so it's gonna be Webb or OMG by the way it looks. Come on Webb!!!!

    3) Roy Williams = David Terrell v2.0. If he could catch footballs with that mouth of his he'd be an all-pro. If he hasn't significantly beaten out Knox before the opener then I start Knox and say good bye to RWill. If we keep him around and don't start him his attitude and his mouth will become a problem and we don't have Olin "the enforcer" anymore. He's gonna be a failure just like Martz last pet's so lets just move on before the problems begin.

We can win with a WR by committee approach because, while we don't have a true #1 WR, we probably have the best and deepest collection of #2's in the NFL. Spread the ball around and get both Bennett and Sanzenbacher heavily involved so that we can compensate for the Oline. With Knox, Hester, Bennett and Sanz we have four guys who can get open and have proven that they can catch the ball. Give some of the work we'd have used RWill for to Hurd and we'll be far better off. Hurd wants his shot but all RWill wants is to play. Not succeed, just play.

    4) Nothing much we can do with those coverage units except let the rookies play to find the two or three we may keep. Toub just needs to keep harping on keeping the mistakes to a minimum. Give Bennett some PR attempts too. We may need both of them before the season is over so that we can rotate the kick-offs between Hester and Knox.

What in the hell is going on with Robbie Gould? Is it the new holder or is it just that he's not hitting them well. His kicks always hooked back into the uprights from right to left but he's been pushing his kicks so far. Even the FG's he's mad and his extra points are going to the right. I also want to see more of Podlesh now. So far he hasn't impressed me all that much for a guy who was our first target in FA. We're not getting rid of him for Lanning so let's get him smoking them.

    5) I don't know why that should even be a question. Bell has considerably outplayed Taylor and it's time to part ways with another of last years Martz/FA failures. The Titans badly need some vet depth at RB with CJ holding out but I'd be willing to bet we couldn't even get them to swap us Tayor for Tim Shaw even up. I'd sure as hell like to try though.

Start the season with Forte, Barber and Bell at RB and keep the best true FB. That's only 4 backs but if Unga ever returns I'd like to see them at least put him on the PS and if not there has to be a guy from somebody else's waivers that we could pick up for the PS. That's a pretty durable group we'd have at RB and I don't think we'd have any trouble making it through the year on those three sets of legs.

    That's my 2 cents worth.

I say target Rwill 15 times tonight. Put him on the spot. That way if he drops 6 out of 10 catch-able balls then he has nowhere to hide. Or maybe he surprises us and plays well. Who knows. At least make him prove something either way.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

I truly find it to be a shame that we never attempted to go after Sidney Rice. As far as I know, he doesn't have the mouth that Roy Williams has, and he's a far better receiver. Roy Williams was the cheap way out for Angelo, and he's going to see what going for the lesser athlete will cost him in terms of wins and losses.

The reason we didn't is because JA won't spend that kind of $$$ on the position. He's always afraid of getting another David Terrell and of course now he has one although a much cheaper version.

So go out and GET the great WR without the character issues. In the meantime the man with the arm just waits and waits and waits. He's just sitting there WAITING for them to give him what he needs. Doesn't make any sense. Urlacher gets what he needs. Cutler doesn't. So ..... since they get priority, the D better carry this team.

Remember when we traded for JC, the point JA was making was JC would make the wr's better....this is why. He has no intention of upgrading the wr position. What he fails to understand is, even the great qb's have help from good to great wr's.
