Bears cut Gholston (4 others)
Defensive end Vernon Gholston’s bid to make the most of a second opportunity in the NFL ended Monday when he was one of five players waived by the Bears.
Gholston registered just one tackle in three preseason games after signing with the Bears July 29. The 6-3, 262-pounder was selected by the New York Jets with the sixth overall pick in the 2008 draft. But he was released in March after failing to record a sack in three seasons.
Also waived by the Bears Monday were fourth-year defensive tackle Tank Tyler and three undrafted rookie free agents: quarterback Trevor Vittatoe, center J.C. Brignone and linebacker Tanner Antle.
With Monday’s moves, the Bears reached the NFL’s mandatory roster limit of 80 a day earlier than required. They must trim 27 more players by Saturday to get to the 53-man limit.

Taylor signed a three-year deal that included $7 million in guaranteed money before last season, but he was ineffective in his first and only season under offensive coordinator Mike Martz. He averaged 2.4 yards a carry, rushing for 267 yards in 16 games last season.
The Bears signed Marion Barber as a free agent this summer to complement starter Matt Forte, a move that made Taylor's exit not much of a surprise. The Bears held Taylor out of Saturday's preseason game against the Tennessee Titans.
The Bears have to cut five players by Tuesday and will have to get down to 53 players by Saturday.
The Chicago Sun-Times first reported the move on Monday.

Glad to see Taylor go, eventhough I was all about him last year. He just never panned out like I thought he would.
Kind of disappointed in Gholston. I figured a guy that needed a second chance like he did would have a little more determination to succeed.

All good cuts and players that needed to go.
Chester Taylor was awful and needed to go.
Vernon Gholston is awful and we have seen the last of him in the NFL.

I thought Gholston would turn it on here, and I even think maybe we were too hasty but with the depth we have what's not to still be excited about.

Rwill won't be cut. At the least he will be bumped down to #2. Kinda sucks, but I think that's reality.
I personally wouldn't mind seeing Knox, Bennet and Hester out there.

I think the dropsies will clear up. we had a little of the same problem out there last year. I trust Sanzenbacher more than Rwill at this point even if he is an UFA.
Gimme Hester Knox Bennett and Sanz all day.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't see them cutting RWill either as much as I'd like them to. The upside though as you point out Grizz is that we have four other guys who we all think are capable of outplaying him so maybe we get lucky and slides even farther down the depth charts.
I think a lot will depend on how much confidence Cutler has in him. If he keeps letting balls that are on target get away for picks or even keeps dropping catchable passes he won't get many thrown his way even when he is in there. He'll end up being a 6'3" 215 lb decoy who gives the other a rest from time to time.
As far as the other cuts go there weren't any surprises as far as I'm concerned. All Gholston showed was that he can get out of the blocks like a sprinter but then he get's nowhere even near the QB on his rush. Better to keep Addison and Reed who have both looked better, are younger, cheaper, and have far more upside. Gholston is just another of those college one year wonders that make scouts drool but never seem to the hang of the pro game.
When they told Taylor he'd sit on Saturday the handwriting was on the wall. They didn't even want to showcase him becuase they knew he has no trade value whatsoever. All they wanted was for him to stay uninjured until the cut. We already wasted $7 mil on the guy, no sense wasting more for an injury settlement.
Never even saw much of the rookies who were cut but I do know that Brignone was the guy who badly whiffed on his block on that goaline play against NY where Barber got stopped short.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.
