    Bears Conract Extensions

With the extent of the cap room, 20 million, that the Bears have and the recent talk of contract extensions perhaps the Bears should look into re-investing in the team throughout this season.

    RB Matt Forte, 6 years 35 million/ 15 guaranteed

He is the 2nd most important player on the offense and he is a signal of some of the draft picks of Angelo that have worked out.

    WR Earl Bennett, 4 years 12 million/ 4 guaranteed

Consistent and very good at his job he deserves to be paid as he is Cutler's favorite target.

    S Chris Harris, 4 years 12 million/ 5 guaranteed

A leader in a young S group he brings toughness and leadership to add to his 5 picks.

    DE Israel Idonidje, 3 years 9 million/ 4 guaranteed

Idonidje is the consummate Bear and a leader on this team and deserves one last contract.

    CB D.J Moore, 4 years 10 million/ 3 guaranteed

Moore is signed through 2012, but he is developing into a very good nickle back which is key in the Cover 2 defense. I would like to sign him before some team pays him to be a starter.

    DT Henry Melton, 3 years 9 million/ 3 guaranteed

Again a player signed through 2012 that we should try and sign before some team pays him as a starter.

    OG Roberto Garza, 2 years 4 million/ 2 guaranteed

This OL will continue to make a transition and Garza is worth keeping around while the transition happens and we can move him to a backup role.

No Briggs? Not advocating, just noting.

I think the best option is to change his contract around. He makes 7 million in the last year and we should pay him that this year and move the 3 million he is unhappy with to the last year.

I agree with that idea too but it seems that JA doesn't. To me refusing that was short sighted because it stirred up a hornets's next that could easily have been avoided. I don't think that shifting years in an existing deal sets a bad precedent. Briggs is performing at his peak right now and may well not perform this well 2 years from now so the lesser salary then reflects the decline in his play. As long as the dollar amount doesn't change and you have no plan to cut the guy it's a small concession to make in order to keep the peace.

Just a thought about Briggs' contract. I'd consider moving the last year of his contract to this year, move this year to next year, and next years to his last year. This way if (read: when) Briggs has a problem with his pay next year, the Bears can switch his last and second-to-last years pay without needing to pay him more.....

Hopefully you can see what I'm thinking there....

    1. Bennett needs an extension
    2. Forte needs an extension
    3. Harris needs an extension
    4. Garza needs an extension

the others aren't as important as these guys and these guys aren't as easy to replace as Moore or Izzy
