Maybe I missed it, but did anyone think about his almost being drafted by the Cowboys (Landry listened to his defensive scouts over the offensive ones) as being a really interesting tidbit?

Butler; Payton May Also Have Suffered From Brain Trauma Like Duerson...

Butler: Payton behavior suggests brain disease

By Fred Mitchell, Tribune reporter 5:10 p.m. CDT, September 29, 2011

Former Chicago Bears kicker and Walter Payton teammate Kevin Butler said Thursday that some of the post-football behavior of the late Hall of Fame running back sounds consistent with those afflicted with a degenerative brain disease.

A new book, "Sweetness: The Enigmatic Life of Walter Payton," written by Jeff Pearlman, is excerpted in the current edition of Sports Illustrated and at SI.com. It alleges that Payton abused painkillers and often threatened suicide.

According to the book, Payton’s former agent and executive assistant recall receiving calls at all hours from him, threatening to end his life.

“He came from that era when players suffered for many, many years. He came from that era when the NFL, from some aspects, turned their back on,” said Butler, the Bears' all-time leading scorer. “Certainly the kids that are playing now are turning their back on players like that who have issues. All of that is documented with the Gridiron Greats (organization) and all of that kind of stuff that we do.”

Butler lost another teammate from the ’85 Bears last February when Dave Duerson committed suicide. It was later revealed that his brain showed signs of the brain disease C.T.E., ostensibly caused by numerous concussions during his playing days.

“Walter delivered hits as much as he took hits,” Butler said. “He was a throw-back running back that you don’t have now because you beat yourself up. If a kid played like Walter did now, yeah, he would have concussion syndromes. He would beat his body down in a quicker rate because the athletes are just bigger and better now. Walter played a long, long time ... gained a lot of yards and took an awful lot of hits. So I would not be surprised if that kind of finding ... though it’s too late to know. Logic would tell you that he would fit right into that category.”

    Payton’s pain tolerance was legendary.

“I saw him do things and have injuries," Butler said. "I saw him take a shot in his turf toe one time under his big toenail. I nearly passed out. He played with that."

Despite the book’s disclosures, Butler said Payton remains his idol.

“He was the leader of the team," Butler said. "When Walter spoke, everybody listened. The way he carried himself on and off the field was exactly what the Bears’ façade was: Have a good time, love your teammates, practice hard ... and that’s what we believed in. Certainly he was the leader of that team.”

Butler questioned the purpose of writing the book.

“I would just say, ‘why?’ What are you trying to accomplish?” Butler said. “I got to know Walter through business, and he was nothing but an excellent business partner. It was called the NFL Pro Shop. We did that for three or four years. I learned more from him out in the field of business than I did from anybody during that time. It’s unfortunate that people find, I guess entertainment, in doing that to other people and their family.”

Butthead delivers a sane response to Pearlman's expose that should be considered. Dave Duerson and his family experienced some very bizzare behavior in the years leading up to his suicide. There were many things he did that were totally our of character for the man that he had been the majority of his life.

Given the violence that Walter played the game with it's really not much of stretch to imagine that some kind of brain trauma may have been involved with Walter as well. As for the pain killers and the like that was as much a part of the game then as holding penalties when Olineman used their hands. We'll never know for certain unless his family comes forward with something but it does fit.

Having had my own experience with mental illness I can honestly say that even a moderate case such as mine can cause some pretty severe emotional disturbances at times and long periods of time where you're behaving in a manner that very inconsistent with how you normally live your life.

So, if you didn't see my post from a few days back, my name is Jeff Pearlman. I was a longtime baseball writer for Sports Illustrated, and I'm now a columnist for the website, SI.com. I've written four books and my fifth, "Sweetness: The Enigmatic Life of Walter Payton," comes out October 4 (but can be pre-ordered everywhere now—sorry for the shameless pitch).

Anyhow, I come here seeking—in all sincerity and humility—advice. I would love to hear your takes on the best way to reach out to Bears fans; to figure out how to market and promote the book in the most, uhm, impactful manner. Seriously, I know the New York and Dallas and San Francisco markets very well (from past books), but Chicago is relatively new to me. I mean, I LOVE the city and have spent much time there. But all fanbases are different and unique.

Please, help a guy out ...

Also, to be sorta shameless here, please consider following me on Twitter (twitter.com/jeff pearlman) and on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Jef...12078882147346). Also, starting Monday I'm breaking out a revamped jeffpearlman.com, OVERLOADED with Payton images, videos, songs (yes, songs), memories, etc ...

I put more into this book than any project I've ever worked on—nearly three years, 678 interviews, thousands upon thousands of articles, etc ... etc. It's become my passion.

    Any help/guidance/wisdom hugely appreciated.

    Much thanks,
